The Boss VE-8 is one of the best pedals I have in my arsenal, but tends to be a bit confusing to use. I connect all the outputs to a Zoom R24 to record what's going on as I walk you through the different output settings.

Thank you, Deb! This was, as always very helpful for me. I've been wanting to add an XLR line selector pedal to record guitar without vocals, which would easily be $150-200. I never used the loops on my VE-8 because I loop in an RC-300, so you showed me with the vocal selector off on my VE-8 I can singing play while only recording my guitar, which is perfect for a lot of my songs and now i can experiment more with my options without dropping more on gear. Thank you for helping all of us with such clear instructions and well produced recordings.

This is a super handy feature of this unit. I've got it set to run Guitar L-XLR Vocal R-XLR, and guitar+vocal out the line for my wedge.

This was an experiment for me as well. Trying to see what the inputs sounded like
I just did an outdoor concert with a friend and brought along the VE8. I had it set up properly and with he help of your instructions all went well. Plus the performance was great fun.
you can get a better sound with a mixer BUT the VE-8 is so much fun to use and it sounds pretty good for everything. I enjoy just sitting down and playing with mine. I've recently used external foot switch with it and it does add quite a bit to the unit. Will be posting that in the next few weeks. Love the VE-8 and I'm not surprised at all that you had fun with it.

This has answered an important question for me! i want xlr mono direct out for vocals and same guitar at church and to record youtube vids at home by usb! sounds like this thing does it all!
This is not geared towards usb recording. While it will send usb signal you’d have much better results with dedicated DAW.

Deb,I just subscribed.I enjoy yor topics and instruction. Maybe you can answer this for me. Is there a way to connect the out put ofthe boss directly into the ipad (Using the cck cable and perhaps a conversion cable on the xlr). I would like to record a video of me singing and playing the guitar using the video camera on my ipdad. I currently do this now with the tc helicon Play acoustic,which similar to the Boss as far as vocal processing.My problem is latency between the my playing /singing and the actual video.Do you think it’s possible to do this without daw software or DI? Or without recording audio then video and syncing?

My VE 8 is arriving today and I plan on experimenting with the guitar mono out via XLR or Line out to determine which input my Bose S1 Pro likes better for the guitar. I have read that there should be less ground floor noise when the guitar is sent via
XLR. But on a side note, I wonder if setting both the XLR and Line to 4 so each has L Guitar mono and R Vocal mono versus setting XLR to 8 (vocal mono) and Line to 9 (guitar mono) has any affect on sound or volume of the output signal volume. I imagine the output should be consistent whenever mono is selected in all cases.
Play with it and see what suits you. You are going to love it.

Hi thanks for great tutorial video,I have a question I just bought zoom g6 pedal effects processor and I want to connect to ve 8,which is first to chain to direct to mixer not affecting the sound of my g6 zoom,thanks in advance
Effects chain from left to right will flow through one another. I would put the G6 after the ve-8. Any effects from ve-8 are going into the g6 so make sure guitar effects are off.
I'm using a boss ve8 as a sound card to record into Ableton but when I want to listen to the output I can't adjust the volume… what should I do?
Not the best option for sound card. But give it a go.
is there a way to output the computer usb audio out throught the guitar outputs without the vox or guitar being heard. As in, guitar and vox outputed to the two XLR outputs seperately, and just computer audio outputted through the jack outs?

Thanks for this video. You use the output settings as to the number in succession. Can I also make the Vocal stereo by using XLR No. 2 and Guitar mono by using Line no. 9? or even vice-versa?
You can select any option combination you want.

Hey Deb, you give the most informative videos on this machine .. I just bought the Fs -6 pedal and I’m trying to figure out how to set it so that when I hit the pedal once it stops the loop .. I hate that you have to double tap the small button to get it to stop.. I see in the directions you can set an external foot switch to stop the looper but I can’t figure it out ! Any advice ?
I really thought I had done a video on this but after looking I see I didn’t. Just finished video going through this step by step. You can stop and clear looper with the Ext pedal which is a huge help. You have to have the pedal buttons all to the left position then set it up. I’ll send you the link once video is up.
Deb Erney thank you so much ! Your videos are the most informative out there on this machine . The directions are not easy to follow and boss puts out videos where nobody says a word but they push a bunch of buttons.. they should put you on the payroll ! Thanks again

I use the #4 settings (on page 5) with guitar left and mic right. That way I can use the left right of the XLR or the 1/4”. I was told by Sweetwater the RCA outputs of the Bose L1 are the best to use. You can use adapters for RCA to XLR = 2 of these cables amzn.to/3PdizR6 OR RCA to 1/4” = 2 of these cables amzn.to/45Ie6ex

So would number 7 be best if I want guitar and vocals in mono to go into one channel on my PA speaker? Why would anyone want stereo unless you are using 2 speakers?

Hi Deb - Thank you for the wonderful demo. Question, when you are performing multiple loops keep in mind, say your'e on your second overdub loop and you mess it up, do you have the ability to erase that messed up overdub while leaving the loop your were tracking to? Hope that makes sense.
you can long hold and it should erase the current overdub? If I remember correctly and tap twice and hold to clear everything.

The VE8 will not connect to IOS device via USB. This video shows options of getting around that

On paper yes. In reality it doesn't work very well. The VE-8 does better with the guitar to create better harmony then when used alone.
If I use another pedal where does it fit in the chain
Ur signal runs in thru and out. I would try it after, but that depends whether or not you want effects to control sound or stay the same.
If I use 2 and 3 which is the vocal and guitar stereo seperate, do I have to run (2) XLR lines out and (2) 1/4" lines out?
You can do that or run left right through either 1/2 or XLR. Settings in your manual show how to accomplish this pg 5

When you factory reset is there any firmware that has to be reloaded. Assuming you can do firmware updates on the VE 8. Thanks.
Yup. So search on boss website for VE-8 firmware updates. They can be a bit tricky. Got to my channel and BOSS VE8 playlist. Think I show how I did it.
I am trying to connect an FS6 type footswitch to the VE8 using a stereo cable to the memory jack. I want the lefthand switch to control the looper & the righthand switch to bring in the vocal harmony when required. I can only get the footswitch to get the harmony but unable to get it to control the looper. I have read & reread page 13 on the manual but unable to figure it out. Maybe I am a bit stupid ! Can anyone please help me before I go insane ?
On the back of your FS6 you POLARITY AND MODE switches. These must be set properly. AND you have to use a TRS 1/4” cable. The TRS has 2 black bands around it instead of 1. Page 6 of your manual. Then on page 13 of the manual you will see how to set the VE-8 to operate with an external foot switch.

hi can u use this as an audio interface and record two seperate audio tracks for vocals and guitar in your DAW? or should i just buy a focusrite?
I do this by panning hard right for guitar and hard left for vocals. Then you can bring it into your software via usb card and separate the channels.

Hi Deb....I just got a Boss VE-8 and trying to figure out some basics....and how to save a loop?
You cant save loops. Once the power is turned off your loop is gone. You can however, save different effects setups and harmony functions. I haven’t even begun to touch on all the functions of the VE-8. We all learn as we go. You are going to love it. Use it for practice to start out then venture into the deeper functions.

The VE-8 relies on instrument input for harmonies so you have to use a direct instrument input. I’ve used the VE-8 to record with Logic Pro X ua-cam.com/video/VfGxD5VtyQE/v-deo.html. The VE-8 doesn’t suggest that it can be used to record with ipad but you never know.
@@DebErney Can you give advise on the Harmonies for this? I have a pretty nice voice, but when I set to high/low I sound totally out of tune. Please keep in mind Deb, I DON"T have any technical knowledge of this equipment in your explanation, so please keep it "simple" for me :-) . Thanks
Shelly Diane is your uku plugged in? If it isn’t you will have to manually set the key for song. The harmonies rely on a clean sound going in OR setting the VE-8 to the key of the song. Where the Harmony button is make sure both the lights are lit up. I always use the hybrid setting for harmonies. On page 6 of your manual.

you can use this with anything that has an output. Just match up the cables Output from VE-8 to Input on anything that provides and input
I was wondering, do you hear a difference between the stereo signals and the mono signals. Are the effects, reverb etc. different in stereo? Does this pedal take two mono signals and somehow makes stereo signals out of them?
I am asking because I want to use 4 cables to go into my mixing station and record the signal.
I wonder if it makes more sense to have dry and effect signal separated for voice and guitar or if the stereo sounds so much better, therefore i would not record the dry signal as a backup.
Page 5 of your manual. You can use 2 XLR and 2 1/4” outputs at the same time.
@@DebErney oh sorry, i didn't make myself clear. I was wondering if the quality of the voice and guitar channels in mono or stereo was different
stereo has right/ left, mono has one channel so in that aspect yes though the quality of sound is the same.
Any idea how to adjust the Headphone levels!?!?
strumstrumstrum never looked before but there doesn’t appear to be a separate volume for the headphone. Page 6 for instructions but no volume for headphones is mentioned.
