what a fucking gangster being able to roll up with a classical guitar and a microphone and just put everyone in a different world. absolutely beautiful
One thing I really appreciate about Mark is that he has no bullshit gimmicks about him. No flashy clothing or anything, just pure talent. That's all that should* matter.
Post college confusion and the inability to hide from the road of life was what this song meant for me the first time I heard this. Timeless. I’ve listened to this at least several times a month since 2016

Had nothing but music for so many parts of my life and sometimes less.Have to say that this journey seems to have ended here and can honestly say that everything kind of makes sense now and the culmination of all thiose roads and non roads has led me here and I can only gaze into the the distance and to the past and be grateful.
he is amazing. He is very classy and poetic in his writing, while also being very deep and strong musically. Not very easy to find another one like this.
I first heard Mark when watching Excess Baggage. My brother, stepsister, and I rented it on VHS, and when Red House Painters' cover of "All Mixed Up" came on, I was transfixed. I watched the credits to see the name of the band. A few years later I found Songs For A Blue Guitar in a 7th Heaven, and it became one of my favorite albums, and I eventually became a musician. A decade passed, and I was playing a show in Wisconsin and someone told me about Sun Kil Moon. I heard this song, and it took me back to being 13 again, and that exact same feeling. Now I come back every few years to this performance, and it remains amazing.
Mark i only smile in my heart listening to your melodies and song, you don’t know beautifully your music weaves the simplicity of life and the human experience of the everyday poetry of mortality, imnot even sure that the Angels understand what it is to be human.Thank you.
I grew up between Summit and Portage counties, Ohio, which both border Stark county, where Mark Kozelek grew up ... these Norwegians have no idea what he's singing about, or what a 'Tuscarawas' is... this song has always deeply reminded me of my childhood and my aging parents.
+Squidward Nostrils - I think the sound you're asking about comes mostly from fingerpicking with nails a little nearer to the bridge instead of directly over the sound hole, that gives it a more treble-y, short sound. He's also using nylon strings on a classical guitar and that definitely affects the tone too, you can look up videos of other classical guitarists to hear the difference the way he plays here is making on the tone.
I loved a girl once. She had very big blue eyes. One night, we were driving home by the river with the rain beginning to come on, and in the morning she was gone.
such a good voice/guitar combination. his voice seems like it needs to be sung within a mix of nylon strings - not a steel string acoustic. good stuff.
he looks so unbelievably normal. complete npc character. imagine if an npc in the overworld pulled out a classical guitar and played the best version of carry me ohio. very cool, writing this as of post-mark kozelek cancellation
You may not understand what I'm asking, but how is he getting that unique sound on his guitar, especially the lower sounding strings? Is it because he has a classical guitar?
It sounds so complex because picking in an open tuning while also playing the bass notes in time with the rhythm. It’s just one guitar no pre recorded stuff. Cool huh? 😂

Yes it's a classical nylon string guitar.

It is tuned low also,
Classical guitar, low tuning, playing closer to the bridge to get a more twangy and trebley sound.
Makes a good alternate version of the song!
