Josh Nixon that is so cool!!! My friend’s grandpa knew Willie Stargell, and my other friend’s dad knew Jimmy Rollins and Dontrelle Willis as kids! All of them lived in Alameda, CA :)
And in the 1973 playoffs, Catfish displayed his clutch pitching twice. After blowing a 4-0 lead in Game 4 of the ALCS against the O's, Hunter was called upon in Game 5, and spun a 5-hit shutout to give the A's their second straight pennant. Then, facing elimination in Game 6 of the World Series against the Mets--and Tom Seaver--Catfish outdueled the eventual Cy Young winner, 3-1to force a 7th game, which the A's won also. BTW, Catish started 4 playoff games in '73--all following a loss--and he won three times and pitched well enough in the other game the A's won in 11 innings. Catifsh was the ace--and the stopper--in '73 and through his career.
He had already thrown loads of innings with Oakland, but in 1975, even though The Yanks were out of it by early august, he just kept throwing complete games. He was winning and I know the yanks didn’t feel anyone in the bullpen had a better chance of closing out the victory than him. Billy Martin did one thing in September of that year that was crazy. The yanks were 11 games out with 13 to play but he still asked Catfish to pitch on TWO-DAYS rest. He did and went 7 innings and won. Cat could have said no, but it wasn’t in his nature to do that. He didn’t retire prematurely though. He’d already made up his mind prior to signing with the yanks in 74 that he was only going to pitch five more years. But without the wear and tear of 75 and 76, his final three seasons would have been better ones.
In 75 he was great(23-14) in 76 he was good(17-15), and after having the arm manipulation procedure in July of 78, he went 9-2. He had great moments in New York too.
A diamond in the rough and a hell of a nice guy to chat with. Too sad this disease took him away from his family and fans. RIP ~
Loved this speech ferom Catfish and listened to it countless times...! As Hawk Harrelson said "Best teammate I ever had"...
My dad lived down the street from Catfish when he was a kid in Hertford, NC. Taught him to throw his first curveball :)

Catfish, I bought your book in 1989. I found-out you were the first free agent. I would be proud to be on your team, as you also like to win! :-)
Outside of the Mick, Catfish was my favorite New York Yankee. What a gamer.

The Catfish was our ace in the hole. When there was a big game Catfish was always ready to pitch

His speech is short.
