- Introducing Terpinolene
Terpinolene is a Cyclic monoterpene that is not so common to the Florida medical dispensaries.
It can be found naturally in parsnips, carrot root, lilac, tea tree, apples, cumin, nutmeg, sage, rosemary, apple conifer trees,
Terpinolene’s scent has been described as woody and herbaceous yet floral. Its definitely fresh smelling because its used in cosmetics, soap, insect repellent (like limonene), and other household items.
Medical benefits:
Animal studies show that its somewhat sedative, but for anyone who has had terpinolene knows that its uplifting and stimulating buzz
Anti-anxiety/anti-paranoia
o Like pinene, this terpene also inhibits acetylcholinesterase (the enzyme that breaks down ACh, the neurotransmitter that helps us stay sharp)
However, if it is sedative, the same mechanism of action would be responsible for its anti-nociceptive/analgesic properties
Its an anti-microbial and natural antiseptic
o terpinolene is known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties ( Turkez, Aydin, Cetin,2014).
This terpene also exhibits anticancer properties
o A 2013 study found that terpinolene may be a strong antiproliferative agent for brain tumor cells and CML cells
Potent antioxidant properties
o A 2015 study showed that low doses have antioxidant properties without harming lymphocytes (Turkez, Aydın, Geyikoglu, & Cetin, 2015).
Recent research is also exploring terpinolenes role in avoiding coronary heart disease in concert with other anti-oxidants as it has been demonstrated to prevent LDL oxidation
Possible anti-nociceptive/analgesic properties
Definitely one of my favorites
