    Base set Dragonair was such an underrated card. Pairing Hyper beam with a Super Energy Removal used to be my killer move (when I was eleven 😂)

      Funny you mention that. Jason replaced his Dragonair Drought deck with a "Duck Drought' deck that's basically Lickitung with 2 Psyduck, 1 Golduck, and 4 Water Energy. The advantages of Golduck are the basic it evolves from (Ruby Retro has gone so far as to argue that Psyduck is the true problem card of the Base-Fossil format, while Jason himself said a lack of Psyduck was one of the few advantages of Base-Jungle) and the ability to hit Magmar for weakness.
      But yea, you were well ahead of your time if you were using Dragonair Drought back in the day. Congratulations!
      The main point of Dragonite/Hitmonchan/Dodrio is that it is impossible for my opponent to keep my active Pokémon paralyzed without, say, Gusting up my only Dragonite. This deck can essentially pivot between a variety of basic techs to draw cards, avert damage (if the list has Mr. Mime), chip away at your opponent, and stall for time (with Lickitung), but it does have access to Dragonair's Hyper Beam for some disruption in that avenue. The concept gets stronger in Base-Rocket because of all the high HP basics in the deck, making it hard to get donked if you lose a key trainer, and Kangaskhan's Fetch, which helps you replenish your hand. Apparently the combo was too high-maintenance for Base-Gym, though.

    Yes! Both of your new Base-Fossil decks! Arcanine is one of the top decks (albeit one that suffers from Super Energy Removal even with four Lass), and Dragonite is a fun anti-Lickitung deck, but I didn't see either of them used very often on TCGONE, especially the Dragonite deck, which I only saw played once, by Jason.

  • @Charmaster04

    Just watched the video. That game was insane!
    I kept waiting for the Arcanine player to pull a Voltorb+Psychic Energy+Switch(+Gust) combo to take a clutch KO on the Kangaskhan. Watching that mind-bogglingly unlikely eight tails across two Comet Punch was almost as funny, though.
    Something about this very has me wondering. The play style was VERY different than mine is when I use Arcanine, which has me wondering... what is the correct way to play it? I tend to use my Lass once per Buzzap when possible, yet my opponent's still usually found Removal cards (granted they were never playing Dragonite). I would also stall for more turns with Psyduck. Unfortunately, I rarely got to attack with all three of my Arcanine as my Psyduck always got Knocked Out and I usually needed to Buzzap three times (how I wish I could have Buzzap'ed four times!). I wish Jay Hornung knew enough about Base-Fossil to film a JayPlays video with Arcanine/Electrode, because I'm sure I'm missing something!

    Hello Holon!! i know this video is quite old but, are you using the Errata for the PlusPower? Because the PlusPower afect to both Active Pokemon. In this particular case with Arcanine's Teke Down should have being getting the 30 recoil damage plus 10 more from the PlusPower.
    Jason Klazinsky wrote about it in his blog:
    PlusPower will increase damage done to both Active Pokémon. This means attacks that damage the attacking Pokémon (like Arcanine’s Take Down) will have the damage dealt to themselves increased. It should read as follows:
    Attach PlusPower to your Active Pokémon. At the end of your turn, discard PlusPower. If this Pokémon’s attack does damage to an Active Pokémon (after applying Weakness and Resistance), the attack does 10 more damage to that Pokémon.
    I realy enjoy your content !! Please keep it up!

    I have both of these decks built in physical format. I wonder how this would be in the tcg game

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 8 місяців тому +1

      @MazterP28 Tragically, Electrode from Base Set was left out of the Gameboy game along with Ditto from Fossil, most likely due to the difficulty of programming either. Jason's new Dragonite/Dodrio list (the one with a Mr. Mime and 4 Psychic Energy) would get even stronger thanks to "Lily Pad Mew" (which we eventually got during the Neo era as our 47th promo) being present in the game since it released before Japan's Fossil format (if I am not mistaken). This Mew is immune to Evolution Pokémon's attacks and has the same attack as Lickitung's first attack, but for a Psychic Energy (I would still probably run the Lickitung too if you could, due to having a limited number of Psychic Energy and due to Lickitung's natural bulk against basic Pokémon). That being said, you probably wouldn't need to grind for an entire Dragonite/Dodrio deck to beat the story, and you would probably want to look up how to get the Mew.
      I would encourage you to find the updated list and Jason's article on the Gameboy game on his blog. UA-cam will eat any messages I put url's into, so if you don't know the link, just look up "Jason Klaczysnki Retro Pokémon TCG."
      Hope this is helpful.

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 8 місяців тому

      @eduardoodraude6679 When you say you don't have enough proxies, are you referring to fake Pokémon cards sellers on places like Etsy create and market as proxies? These handcrafted proxies probably look nicer than printing out pictures of the cards on your home's colored printer (or your library's?), cutting them out, and sticking them loose in a card sleeve over a basic Energy, but the home-printed proxy method is quicker and cheaper and makes not having enough proxies a nonissue, hence why I inquired on what you meant by proxies.

    I might've run 2 more defenders and even some potions to deal with the fact Arcanine steadily makes itself KO bait. I don't really see any point in maintenance other than being extra draw power in desperate situations (which at that point you've probably already lost.)
    I think the Psyduck is a nice idea to ensure your Arcanine gets a chance to power up, but it's vulnerable once it goes out. My strat would to have an Arcanine sit on the bench as long as possible, and beef it up to the point to where it it can handle energy removal attempts, and tank as many hits as possible. The deck would call for maybe one less Growlithe and Arcanine, No maintenance, No Gusts because nothing resists fire in the format and you're supposed to be able to kill anything in 1 to 2 turns, No Gastly cause considering the speed you are going for, if you need to fish out DCE, you have already lost, ( also you have nothing to retrieve your electrodes with), 2 less Psychic energy, and one less switch. (you can search for it if you need it) Then I would add one more Lass, 2 more defenders, 2 potions, and 4 fire energy to add beef to your Arcanine, or at least recover from the worst possible scenarios.

      @@hobojoe2769 Honestly, I think Gastly might be the Mime counter here, which I don't love because 1) you're begging to flip heads so you can KO it, 2) you're begging for your opponent not to have switch, 3) you probably need a Switch of your own just to get it into the active, and 4) your opponent may run more than one Mr. Mime.
      What makes Gastly worrisome is that it won't always succeed in getting DCE at a time when it's relevant, taking out a Mr. Mime when you need to, setting up a KO, or biding for time. What makes it beautiful is that it can do all of these some of the time when called to. In short, it has a lot of different roles for shoring up a high-rolling deck, but it can be a very high-rolling tech itself.
      Honestly, I don't think I'm playing Arcanine anywhere close to correctly, but I wonder if it's a tier 2 deck at this point. It looks like it would do well against Wigglytuff and the tier 2 decks, but Lickitung Stall just has far too many ways of making its life difficult. Jason thought it was one the BDIF at one point, but it hasn't made a good showing in any of the recent Base-Fossil online tournaments, either, so I wonder if he would still saying its one of the BDIF.
      Shoutouts to Jason's updated Dragonite/Dodrio list for playing a Mr. Mime and some Psychic Energy. You might want to check the updated list out, @holon_phantom.

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 8 місяців тому

      I would encourage you to go to Jason's blog, Retro Pokémon TCG (though I just call it by it's url, which I know from past experience UA-cam won't let me post because it doesn't let me post url's to anything but other episodes from the same UA-cam channel) (Be sure to include Jason's name when you look it up), click "menu" and "contact," and write him an email sharing these ideas. I started a long email correspondence with him by asking a question about if he planned on holding another Prop 15/3 tournament at Woodfield Mall, and we've discussed many deck ideas and card choices. He was also refining an Arcanine/Electrode/Dark Vileplume deck for Base-Rocket the last time I saw him on TCGONE, so he has been deck building around Arcanine recently and is probably intimately familiar with its strengths and weaknesses.
      Hope this is helpful.

    Is Arcanine a good deck ? It seems terrible. Heavy recoil damage, forcing to build deck around assecurating it. Ridicolous energy cost, forcing Electrode suicide setup and giving prizes for opponent. Mediocre Hp, no pokepower...

    • @rjbourgeois5490
      @rjbourgeois5490 3 місяці тому +1

      It's a tier 2 definitely, but it works. The damage output hits the big basics well enough to one shot, only requires 2 stage 1s which frees up deck space compared to running stage 2s, and defender mitigates the damage on both yours and your opponent's turns so with a few potions, the deck works pretty well. It's actually pretty tough to to do 100 damage consistently to take out three arcanines. The major downside of the deck is electrode is susceptible to energy removals. The major positive of it was that it was more budget friendly while still being competitive compared to running holos, let alone the big three.

    @holon_phantom So far this is your most watched video of the year! Also, given how quickly your channel has risen to 1,300 subscribers, I think you can easily expect to hit 2,000 by the end of the year!
    Also, I saw that you're making a guest appearance on Ruby Retro's channel this Friday! He's been testing an Arcanine list that uses Pokédex to stack your deck so you can use Lass with no Trainer cards in hand, not shuffle your deck, and hopefully draw an Oak at the beginning of the next turn. He hasn't posted it on his Twitter account yet, but I'm looking forward to when he's confident enough with his list to post it.
    Hope you and your wife are doing well.

    • @Charmaster04

      @holon_phantom Turns out RubyRetro is done playing Arcanine, and he's probably going to post the list on Saturday, but basically he made room for the Pokédex by cutting the Energy Removal and Super Energy Removal. I figure @nekomarulupin would probably be interested in hearing about these changes, so, if you're reading this, hopefully you don't mind me tagging you a second time.
