Rock Mulch vs. Wood Mulch

- Mulch is an important final element of a healthy garden. 3 inches of mulch will help stop weeds, retain moisture and keep the soil insulated. 1 cubic yard of mulch will cover 120 square feet about 2-3 inches deep. Wood mulch will cost about $50 to $90 per cubic yard. Rock mulch will cost anywhere from $90 - $400 per ton (and will cover about 100 sq ft) but never need replacing whereas wood mulch will need replacing every 2-4 years.

Thanks for discussing the different mulches.
This Summer I started a project in my from yard where I built a rock garden with small boulders and pea gravel mulch planted with succulents on one half the yard and then did a decomposed granite topped with pea gravel for a winding walkway and then on the other half of the yard I laid down cardboard topped with 3 inches of shredded mulch because I was fighting bindweed there and thought this would help. We will see how well that worked next Spring when I want to plant that area
Sounds like a cool project, good luck!
