In modern cars you actually loose hp if you get rid of the catalytic converter without programming it
alot of tunes actually are better if the cat is still on the vehicle working properly

@@MajorFenix Well, modern cars take messure your exhaust temperature and stuff informt and behind the catalytic converter and if you just get rid of it, may your car go into a destress mode with higher fuel consumption and less power du try to fix the error

Well, you can remove the catalytic converter, modify the fuel system to run E85, then have a good tuner put together a proper tune, and your engine will produce more power while reducing the emissions compared to stock. But of course, the EPA says this is illegal as well.
How is it reducing emissions? You do realize that E85 requires around 30% MORE energy to make compared to petroleum gas. Am I missing something?
@@anthonywelcher5036 Yes. When gasoline burns, it produces carbon monoxide. The cat then turns that into carbon dioxide. When ethanol burns, you get carbon dioxide. IE: Ethanol doesn't require a cat to catalyze the CO into CO2.
There is still that 15% gasoline that does turn into hydrocarbons, however.
The EPA can choke on a noodle and kick it.
@@anthonywelcher5036 it doesn't take 30% more energy, it takes 30% more fuel because E85 fuel is less energy dense compared to gasoline. that is not quite the same thing.
@@alexdeadeye6905 but if you can advance the timing to take advantage of the higher octane of the ethanol it doesn't become a problem. Makes more HP, more MPG.

You could opt for a high flow catalytic converter if your state does inspections. I don’t know if it changes anything but I imagine having a catalytic converter at all is better than not having one.
A high-flow cat does improve flow. More flow typically means better power and mpg.
Remember kids, you can also increase your acceleration by removing airbags and seat belts. Every gram matters. Do yourself a favor. Cut the weight and go fast.

It's also bad for the environment to remove that cat. _Some_ emissions regulations do very little, but the catalytic converter does a lot.
It's a drop in the ocean. If no cars had cats it would be a big problem. If just a few people do it, it doesn't hurt anything.

In Idaho when I was in High School. I saw guys cut the muffler off but, kept it in place. That way when emissions came around they would just weld the muffler back on lol.
I've seen a guy mod his muffler to have a butterfly value that he could open or close, so he'd have a legal daily driver and when he wanted he could make it preform like a straight pipe

I live in NY and because of recent freakout in car community about new noice regulations from cars and bikes, I decided to jump in the rabbit hole and learn as much as I could. Turns out this mod is illegal, at least in NY. But if you want to run a straight pipe, having this mod will definitely make you less of a target for pulling over. I doubt any cop will be crawling under your car to check it out
Some exhaust systems are sold with suppressing tips. You can put them on and take them off at any time.
That mod would be an electric cutout
Cut-outs were a thing in the sixties. We made them in shop class. Operated by an old choke cable.

I choose both! You can get high-flow cats nowadays that aren't going to impact power. I put that on my '75 Laurentian - thing ran as clean as modern cars, and was a huge performance gain from the original 70's cat that was really restrictive.
They had cats in 70? My c/10 has true dual exhaust no cats!
@@TetraHydroCannabinolTHC Yeah - most cars started to get fitted with them in the early to mid 70s (I'm in Ontario, Canada). Early cats were not exactly great. Modern computer-aided design allows for cats to be designed today that don't rob performance like they used to. I loved the big old boat, but I'm also aware of the negative impact of all the unburned hydrocarbons, so that was the fix for me.
You still have heat restrictions when tuning no fear of destroying a cat if there isn’t one.
@@jacobriverson3807 Yeah, and can't use the old de-carboning trick. There are some drawbacks when doing tuning/maintenance if you can't bypass.
Note: In Texas emissions inspection are done by county and most counties don't require them

Back when catalytic converters where a new thing yes but nowadays that's actually the opposite see your engine and ecu is designed to have them. Ripping them off hurts not helps

How so? I'm genuinely curious. My cousin keeps saying the same thing. He's a retired diesel mechanic. Says it won't actually produce wnough power to be worth it really. That it's only good if you want the money for your cat when parting it out
Recently just passed inspection in Tx fully straight-piped with no cats. In my county all they do for emissions is plug into the OBD-2. An ECU flash tune takes care of all that and ppl don't suspect a thang 😈
Strait piping can actually increase exhaust gas velocity, reduces low rpm torque. So it'll make it slower lol. Not really a problem on cars with forced induction

I did this to a 1986 Audi Coupe I owned back in 1992. Didn't have a choice as the insides of the Cat came loose and it was either replace it, or hollow it out. I hallowed it completely. I had the car 4 more years after that and it passed CA Smog every time. Miss the 90's so much!
Unknown fact to most every single person that will see this video, removing your cat will not free up any power unless it was partially or completely stopped up.

I live in San Diego. When I used to go down to TJ, you could always notice the difference. It smelled bad. So many cars without cats. They stink!.
It's easy to pick out a car without a cat. The smell makes me extend my following distance and flip the HVAC to recirc.

In TN. They just made every county except Davidson emissions free. Also you now have to pay tag registration fees for every year it’s not been registered. Yikes!
Keep the catalytic converter for everybody’s sake. It makes the car quieter, and saves the environment. You could put something on that dress makes the exhaust blow out faster.
Sometimes you don't have to make the choice and somebody else makes it for you when they cut it out at 2 in the morning
In my early days of being a 'gearhead' with carburetors and pre-electronic distributors, the adage was,..."A high horsepower engine is an efficient engine and an efficient engine is a clean burning engine." I'd do a minor tune-up at least once a month to keep my engines performing at their peak horsepower. That seems to still apply. [Wink.] JMO.

My son is moving to Texas so I looked up the emissions laws. Only 15 counties require testing. Houston just happens to be located in one. I haven't checked, is Tennessee the same way?

Just depends on where you go. Hamilton County (Chattanooga) tests where Bradley County (next to Hamilton) doesn't.
I chose both, vw 2.0tsi with cat back straight pipe, full spool and moderately loud
I prefer to do both. Take your catalytic converter and by removing the innerds you have a "high flow cat" with more horsepower 😂

@@ProdLar most places that don't do emissions testing will still do a visual check to see if you have a converter. It could be hollow inside (gutted) and they would probably never know. The converter on my Focus is welded fast to the exhaust manifold and it's a pain in the arsenal when it clogs up. Ask me how I know...
@@ProdLar u don’t have to tune it just to get the check engine off. U just buy a check engine eliminator and plug ur sensor into that then into the cat and it’ll trick the computer to think it’s fine. If ur cel was on before u installed the cel eliminator then you’ll have to unplug the battery for a few min to reset it but it won’t come back. And to answer your question, there is a way to disable cel altogether if you get it tuned.

I live in Alabama. No engine or emissions inspections at all, and the only state where you won’t get fined for not having cats or mufflers. You can literally drive around with no exhaust. And people do.

This is some of the worst advice one can give. Modern cats offer very little obstruction to the flow and removing it can even hinder performance without a proper engine tune. At best this will give u like 10 more hp while significantly increasing emissions that are harmful to the environment and the people around you.
That is what manufacturers tell to sell you sports cars that sound like vaccuums

I walk and public transport commute, so my exhaust is my butt.
Minnesota doesn't have vehicle inspections, so lots of highschoolers run around without cats and mufflers. The cops aren't afraid to crawl under your car to make sure you've got cats though if they suspect they're missing.

Where i live, it's not required to do emissions tests for Mazda rotaries and certain alternative fuel powered cars like kerosene.
Kinda good since premixing a rotary can destroy the cat, so you can just take de-cat without worry.

yessir just go to a dyno shop and get it tuned!
if you have an O2 sensor in or after the cat, you'll need a dummy sensor. They are sold as diagnostic and tuning aids, and are cheap.
yep most cars will require a retune after straight piping because the 02 sensors in the cats get thrown off for having much more flow.
Stand alone ecu is one way
My dad is a mechanic in Mexico, and we used to get cars with clogged converters the easiest fix was to removed them and we hit the inside with hammer and chisel put them back on and there 😂🤣 it was fixed.
When they first were put on new cars, I remember an older dude at church described doing exactly that to his new car.
I keep my family van stock, but my truck is built for fun. Tuned headers, high flow muffler, no cats, no smog control, electric water pump, & electric fan.
I'll just stick with my 1970-1/2 Ford...

Says a lot about the type of people in this area 😢 They should attach their face to the exhaust pipe with no catalytic converter and get a feel of why they should not remove it.
Or get a high flow cat system and do both, only reason to remove cats completely is if you are at a really high power level and on a 2-step or antilag system a lot (as these will blow the cats out anyways)

Yes, it'll make the vehicle louder and you may gain a slight increase in hp and mpg, but removing the catalytic converter will do more in terms of hp/mpg.
Catalytic converters produce reverse pressure and, if removed, will actually reduce proformance. You can replace the muffler with one that has better flow (for under $200), yet doesnt make your car sound like a shitbox.

I had an 1983 280zx and did a converter removal and put racing headers on it...sounded awesome!!!

I just moved to Tennessee and finally have learned why so many cars here are ridiculously loud.
I did this on my first car when I was young. You also gotta realize this makes the car LOUD. I'm talking too loud for most, I remember I had to drive to another state for my sister's wedding and the drone between 65 and 85 was unbearable. I honestly don't recommend this, just go with an exhaust system or muffler upgrade if you want better sound in my humble opinion.
