  • Buying a used Audi A8? Here are some things you should know about the Audi A8 D4. In this video I talk about recalls, common problems and know issues that should be aware.
The D4 was the third generation of Audi A8, it was sold between 2011 and 2017 with a few facelifts in between those years.
Under the hood this beast has a 4.2-litre aluminum V8 engine that can produce 372 horsepower. It can propel the A8 to 100 km/hour in about six seconds, yet fuel consumption can be as low as 7.8 L/100 km on the highway.

Hello, nice review thanks a bunch!
My long story short about the air suspension issue. It happened to me and I brought the car to Audi dealer. They told me it costs me about €5000 to have it fixed. However I explained that the suspension works (lowers and raises when I press the buttons) also, I don’t get any error when the car is loaded with some significant weight. I didn’t do anything and the error disappeared by itself.
Next happened again but this time I noticed there’s an option to activate the air suspension when you want to change a tyre!
I did that and also raised the car on an elevator. I disabled the option when the car was back on wheels. Guess what folks? Error magically disappeared and never showed up again. It’s 3 months since this happened.
I hope my comment will help some people to save some € if you own one of these beauties.
    Cheers

So what is that terrible reason you shouldnt buy it without warranty? Are those all issues that you can expect from A8? Because that was very short list, and non of those issues are deal breakers or extremely costly, most(all) non-luxury cars have bigger list of issues, this is nothing, literally every car have some specific problems.... thumb down from me for clickbait title written with capslock 🙄

I own a 2011 Audi A8L and have expedited a few of the issues you mentioned in this video - specifically a coolant leak, air suspension failure due to a faulty front passenger side air shock, a broken control area, etc etc. After 150K miles and the mentioned repairs, the car still drives well.

Well done. You did a good job presenting the nice features and the potential problems in a level headed manner. No fluff or distractions. So, if I understand correctly many problems have an Audi recall but the air suspension may cost $8,000 to repair and the timing chains, guides and tensioners may cost $4,000 to replace. But it would be a good ride for another 60,000 to 100,000 miles

Love this video! Mine started leaking oil at 148k and it was every single seal after that once I got them all replaced ( not at the --cash sucker-- dealerships ) not one other issue at all I'm at 355K all high way miles original timing chain and guides but my oil changes are at 3k miles always ….oh it’s a 2012 A8L and I have replaced the high pressure fuel pumps twice on it, myself as well as the drive belt for the alternator. As you may or may not know the AC compressor and power steering pump are both electric motors, self contained! I’ve never had any issues with air suspension whatsoever, but I’m used to dealing with it because of owning Lincolns in the past so I go slightly above and beyond making sure, I wash all the debris with the pressure washer off of the struts and airbags, at least once at every season change.

I did purchase a 2016 A8 L4T used from a Audi dealership after a 2 year lease return. I had APR do a stage II ECM remap tune on it so it remained under factory warranty being done through a Audi certified performance center. This set the American factory speed limiter another 40 mph up the scale so it no longer cut out at 130 mph. I can't find a thing to dislike about this car! Glad my father drove Packard's, Cadillac's, Lincolns, Buicks, when I was a kid it rubbed off on me I guess.

My 2015 A8 has just come up with Emissions Control System warning light. After lengthy investigation it turned out to have a failed AdBlue pump and they are VERY expensive. However, otherwise it has been, and is, a terrific car and well worth the cost. Superb and I greatly recommend it, especially the diesel, which is very fast and very economical.

I have had coolant leaking onto the adblu injector, leading leaks to the AdBlu. Lucky I had extended warranty. Audi partially fixed the problem. I say partly because they just changed the Adblu hose/pipe and not the main problem. 6 months later the problem occurred again. They fixed the problem but still didn't fix the coolant system that had a leak. One year on, I still have leaking coolant. I just can't be bothered to leave the car with Audi because they will take at least 2 weeks to solve it. The 2 times they took the car took a combined 7 weeks.

The weep hole drains from sunroof het blocked and they egress on side post by door . Leaks into floor. To clean drains use a piece of weed eater cord to snake them out at least twice a year .

Hey guys, I have a 2015 A8L 3.0 TDI from new. The first problem I had was with the Adblu, then the bushes and suspension arms. I changed the bushes, Audi warranty covered the adblu (they took 5 weeks), 6 months later the problem with the AdBlu reoccurred. This time they took just over 2 weeks but when I received the car, there was a leak in the coolan system. Took it back, they ran a test and said they couldn't find it. So a year on I have a leak with the coolant. Which I cannot be bothered to take to Audi anymore. I just can't wait to find a decent car to partexchange it with.

I have the Audi 2011 A8L and I bought it at 97,000 miles from the original driver in 2020. Was running awesome until early this year when it ran hot on me on the way to work one day - found out I had a leak. Thank God I got it to the mechanic within 10 minutes and the engine was not affected (according to the mechanic). After that I noticed that after I would run the car and park it for about 2 hours the car would struggle to start when I got back in it (say like I was at my sons football practice and then we leave) and I would have to pump the gas as I was starting it and then it would turn. My oil level was fine, all liquids are fine. Check engine light stays on and oil light too even though theirs no issues according to my mechanic. Sensors have been checked and they are fine. Suspension is fine too. Now that it's very cold in the mornings, the car starts up and I let it sit to warm up and it starts to shake and the EPC light pops on and blinks (check engine light still on and oil light on). The car feels like it's gonna die out but it doesn't. I drive my kids to school and when I stop at a red light, the car has a light shake- EPC light still on blinking, check engine light on. I make it to the school and shut the car off. I start it back up the EPC light is off, the check engine light stays on and the car rides smooth and damn near perfect. Whats up with that?!! I've had this car in the shop so many times. Has anyone ever had to deal with this with this particular model? What could be the issue? Any suggestions on what I could suggest to my certified Audi mechanic?

i have the exact same car. 2011 A8L. same problem as well, check engine light is on and my car stalls when i turn it on, the car starts up fine when it’s a cold start but after that i have to pump the gas as well to get it to start. my camera and sensors do not work and the check engine light always pops on even if you clear it, it will come on again when you start the car. it shakes and i have to rev or accelerate so it won’t shut off on me. i’ve taken mine to a lot of mechanics and they can’t seem to figure it out cause Audi’s are known for electrical problems. i don’t know if this helps but plug in a scanner, if it has the code “P2755” then that’s the problem. has something to do with the “transmission cooler control fluid circuit high” i’m taking my audi to the dealership for the 2nd time cause i found a recall describing the problems my car has and i’m going to make them fix it for free cause it says free of charge and recalls do not expire.
      hope this helps!

@@jtsgarage Wow thanks for your response. I thought I was going crazy because I would describe whats going on with the car to my husband and the mechanic and they would both not really understand or get it. When they would drive the car, suddenly theirs no problems and they weren't experiencing the same things I was experiencing. I will ask my mechanic about that code you mentioned and the recall that Audi has for the car- hopefully it helps because right now the sensors are still on (even though we replaced them a month ago - the check engine light finally shut off) and supposedly the mechanic took it to an Audi dealership and had them run scans but he didn't mention the recall. Right now the car is behaving after having it in the shop in December for about 3 weeks. I love this car so much, I get so many compliments because the last owner took care of it so great- the interior and exterior of the car is perfect and all of the bells and whistles work perfectly, its just the little annoying things that pop up from time to time with it that really stress me out. This is my third Audi. The best one I owned was a 2006 A6 Quattro wagon. The only thing that died on me in that car was the radio. I sold it and the new owner still sends me messages saying how happy he is with the purchase. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.

I bought a second hand 2011 A8 4.2TDI three years ago. It had done 80,000km, I’ve put another 110,000 on it, mainly country driving. It’s a great car inside and out, and quite economical (around 8l/100km). Very reliable, it did blow a front suspension strut on a very hot day (44C) going through a pothole. Repair was $5000 but covered by insurance. A couple of little niggles, the sunroof refused to close one day, but it worked again the next day and no issues since. Presently the adaptive cruise control is not working, it says there is a camera fault. I would rather it had a full spare tyre, not a space saver.

If you read on forums, 4.0 is a problem child. The 3.0T V6 is much more reliable. I had a D3 - had issues with bushings and struts - heavy car and cost me a lot of money to find it - was the control arm bushings... i calculated the car cost me 2000 in maintenance per year... acceptable...

During parking from the front side/ or sides it sometimes doesn't beeps, neither it shows in MMI that I might be hitting something. But when parked and then when I put it in reverse, it shows on the MMI that hey dont go in the front there is an obstruction , I am like "Come on man I needed you to tell me this when I was parking, not when I am reversing". I have yet to hear of any high end luxury car that didn't have a lot of mechanical and electrical problems even for a brand new one. No matter if it's Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Range Rover, and even Bentley or Rolls-Royce. It's funny how these vehicles brand new cost almost $100,000 or more so you'd think they would have the best quality parts for the price even when they are well taken care of. But for many years high end luxury vehicles have always been known to have the most problems. I didn't include Mercedes and Lexus into the group only because those seem to hold themselves together a lot more than the others. It doesn't mean that something like the S-Class or LS doesn't have it's own issues as well, but they last longer and are not as expensive to fix.

    • @TheGersh18
      @TheGersh18 2 роки тому +1

The 3.0 is the more reliable one. Unit 2017 the 4.0T had a design flaw that would clog the oil line feeding the turbos and result in turbo failure. I’ve heard of this happening as early as 50k miles on the clock. It’s an unsettling feeling of sitting on a ticking bomb, I have a 2015 4.0T with now 86k miles and no more warranty.

@@Br230. the oil line issue got a recall, was fix and turbos still going strong. Shockingly no major issues and I’m at 108k now. An occasional electrical gremlin pops up but then resolves itself quickly. If getting this car I’d still say the 4.0 is the way to go. Maybe check for transmission maintenance history, for many years before the were “service free” on these they are not.

If you are buying car like this, first you needs to realize, how long you want to keep it, and to be prepared for really expensive repairs, because most likely previous owners sold it, right before them. I really don't recommend to totally screwed up this car with coil suspension, if you don't have money for new one, especially when here it is related to another subsystems, which are "talking" to each other. In simple this is not a car from 90's with few wires here and there, so if you are not ready to maintain it properly, then buy rather something much simpler, like A4/A5
