I have had a 2013 A8 L 4.0T for about 3 years. This video is 100% on point. I now have 112,000 miles on the car and have had the following issues: 1. PCV Valve Failure - You WILL have this problem if you haven’t already. It’s a known fault and Audi actually acknowledged the problem and paid for the replacement. In the 4.0T engine this means serious labor as the PCV is absolutely buried and difficult to get to. 2. Water leak from the windshield. I had this problem. First noticed this while going through a car wash. You are going to want to replace your entire windshield, but you can do this by simply adding sealant. I promise you. Don’t replace the entire windshield. But if you own this car, this WILL happen. Remember, it is NOT your sunroof. It is the windshield. 3. Vibrations at 1,000 and 3,000 rpm. I noticed about 2 days after I purchased my car. It felt like the car was shaking when I was at low speeds and just before stopping. I called the dealer and informed them that this has been a known issue with this model. They agreed to fix it. I believe they had to do some welding on the exhaust system to fix it. If you have the 4.0T engine, this WILL happen to you if it hasn’t already! 4. The Air struts will leak and fail on you. The right front went at 95,000 miles. I now have 112,000 on the car and have the original rear struts, but these things are not cheap. If you go with the OEM part, you’re looking at $1,500 for each strut. Along with labor, you’re looking at around $4,000 to replace a pair. 5. My screen still goes up and down, however I can hear it struggling from time to time. I expect it go out any month now. So I would agree this is an issue. It may just need more grease, but it’s certainly a problem as you cross 100k miles. Overall, I love this car. The power is phenomenal and even though it’s 7 years old, you still feel special driving it. It has all the comfort you want and you’re quicker than a 5.0 Mustang. Just be prepared for these fixes and put $300 per month away for these repairs. Don’t let them sneak up on you and you’ll be fine. Lastly, oil changes, oil changes, oil changes. If you have a high mileage car like me, you have got to stay on top of your oil changes. This will prevent the PCV valve issue that will cost you over $1,000 in labor fix. I have heard the next items to go are the turbos failing ($7,000 fix) and the transmission going out. I am praying I get another 50,000 miles out of the car without this happening but we’ll see. Fingers crossed.

@@NateDiaz29 it held up great but I just traded it for a 2010 BMW M3 with 65,000 miles. It honestly doesnt compare to the quality, comfort or luxury of the A8 but it has a much higher value which is the only reason I traded.
can you please tell me when to change the timing chain, belt tensioner, water pump, thermostat, harmonic balancer/flywheel??? Also is electronic power steering a common issues in these cars ? How to avoid that
The battery is under the spare tire in the trunk & it costs $573.98 installed at an Audi dealership. Installing S7 cams will set you back $ 3860.00. APR will remap the chip for extra power & quicker acceleration comes with the tune. Cost $ 1380.00. Replacing the down pipes is a $1300.00 fix to the vibration issue that is easy to do. It's the best sleeper money can buy if you ask me. Nothing is cheap being part of the VW group.
Thank you for video! How to fix jerk shifting on 2015 4.0 A8L? * Jerk shifting 1-3 gear up shift and down shift. * It's got a smooth down shifting when braking it is jerking when the car is slowing down it self on low RPM.
this problem can occur for various reasons like: -because of some issue in the engine -low oil level in the gearbox -old/dirty oil in the gearbox - the dirt can clogg the mechatronics unit -because of old gearbox software - so occasionally a software update can help -sometimes faulty gearbox mechatronics unit --worn torque converter -or rarely even the low battery voltage can cause these issues all in all, first I would scan the car for fault codes with a good OBD scanner, if there are no fault codes then I would change the oil in the gearbox if it has never been changed + properly clean the mechatronics unit
Excellent and very informative video, thank you! In the US, the last year for the D4 is 2018. Since a used 2017 or 2018 A8 4.0T is towards the end of production for the D4, do these cars still have the problems you discussed, or have they have been corrected? I like the A8 very much, but should I consider something like a Lexus if I want a reliable luxury car?
I've had 2 Audi A6's no problems, currently have an A8 2012 which I've had since 2016 and very unlucky for me sadly. Start stop not operational Keyless entry fault Start Stop button not working Fault with air conditioning Engine belt snapped in 2019 very expensive to fix. Probably go back to an A6 next year.
@@Mr1bigsalnot sure about his Audi, but my 2007 A6 C6 3.2 FSI got me to 250 000 km. It's been a fantastic car, definitely some maintenance, cam girldles seal, timing tensioners and some other minor ones, it's been a fantastic car. Trade it for a 2015 A8L 3.0 TDI, so far no issues at all, car has only 43000 km.
i have a 2013 facelift a8l 4.2 tdi and had water leak brought it to a shop to change the windshield now that adaptive cruise or whatever its named doesnt work but i dont care I never used it anyway
Is the 6.3 W12 similar to the old W12, but just bored out to a bigger size? If so I presume the A8 6.3 is quite reliable as well? Albeit with higher running costs than the V8s
most problems are from humid climate with drop below freezing since people never service the air dryer and it sends water into the air spring. it later freeze and burst the air springs over time.
can you please tell me when to change the timing chain, belt tensioner, water pump, thermostat, harmonic balancer/flywheel??? On diesel engines Also is electronic power steering a common issues in these cars ? How to avoid that
Yeah they are not bad for what they are going for. The S8 are going from £28 - £40k which is cheap for something made from 2013. Only thing which would deter me from this car is the repair costs most likely would be high but if you'd get it as a weekend car or do little mileage in it then most likely things won't wear out sooner.
Only problem with my A8 4.2 FSI 2012 V8 is a fuel leak from the rear. We have to see if its a hose or a clip….I belive there was a recall in europe but not in North america for this issue.
it is a massive and quite complicated engine, but the good thing is that it doesn't have turbochargers and it doesn't have serious problems either however the maintenance of this engine can be very expensive, for example if you have oil or coolant leaks, then in most of the cases you have to remove the whole engine to just replace some gaskets or eventually some sensors the overall reliability also depends on the actual mileage of the car and the previous maintenance if you do the preventive maintenance in time-like changing the spark plugs, filters, all the fluids, then you can avoid a lot of possible problems
Thomas Smith Jr Do it. The 12 cylinder is quite reliable (especially naturally aspirated) which the 6.3 W12 is. Maintenance is important, but if it is well kept, their are solid cars. Also, you get 507hp and silky smooth power delivery :)
I got a 4.2 tdi 2011 with 76k on it high spec win beautiful Blue but it dose have a few problems the keyless entry system donst work on the Passenger side door to unlock only even if you us the key but it locks fine the cruise control don't work if I got my music on and turn off the air cool seats it switches to the radio for me must think it can read my mind but the paint work needs work but its still great so far but soon has it starts to go wrong I think it maybe time to change the repair bills just won't be worth the car
I just test drove a 2014 a8 3.0T. Is it normal when you are driving slow like driving in a parking lot, When you take your foot off the gad pedal in first or second gear low rpm’s to feel a slight jerk in the transmission. Almost feels like it is stuck in that gear rather than up shifting to a higher gear. Almost feels like your in a standard and you forgot to shift.
I've also read about the 4.0t having issues with oil starvation to turbos due to oil tube filters clogging, but I'm not sure how common this problem is or if regular quality oil changes prevent this from happening.
Audi just sent out a TSB and are now giving a full warranty 10 years 120000 miles. I just had my turbos replaced at 81200 miles with complete Turbo failure
Currently I'm in the market for a W12. Just like the pre-facelift (before 2015) the price is much lower. Is there any major difference? Because the price of an 2015 is almost double compared to the 2013.
Id like to comment on the rust issue. This is unlike the D3, the D4 DO rust. But its the subframes holding the suspension components. In the D3 they were aluminium( very good grade too) but on the D4 they are in steel and in canada they rust out quickly
Sorry for bothering you after 11month, but may I ask that if you need to remove some plastic covers to see the subframes that you're talking about? I'm considering buy a used one in Canada, and I really know that rust could completely kills a nice car. Therefore I would like to confirm that, thanks for your time reading and please enlighten me on it.
@@louisz1553 You can see a glimpse of it without removing plastic. But better to remove and inspect. The rust is only on those subframes, body stays good. There is 3 main ones, 2 in front and one in the rear. All should be crusty. The first to rust out is the one under the plastic cover under the engine. Also inspect the inside surface of the brake rotor in the front. Exterior looks good but inside gets grooved to hell. Typical caliper related issue in canada on the D4

Hi, I drove an 4.2 tdi but it makes no change compared to an 740 D or 740 XD even it has 6 cilinders, so don't test an 7 F01/02 ..Ofcourse the 4.2 tdi goes very wel, it has lots of torque, consumption depends on your driving style :-) Quality is very good. Ergonimics not so good as 7 series, I drive is much better.
Ato Nympha maintenance, in the video it says you need to have a oil change every 15 thousand kilometers but it’s not true only every 30-40, the gearbox is 100% maintenance free but at higher mileage you will notice they get a bit slower (we noticed this in our d3 generation after 460 thousand kilometers) our car is the 3.0 tdi which we usually get 1 liter for 12 kilometers and lasts +- 800 km on a 90 liter tank Premium options for safety really look for the automatic braking they are easily spotted by looking under the headlight if it’s a black ball shape it’s the sensor, it looks like a European foglight but that’s a real must have, also if you are a sound freak the b&o sound system is a must have the sound quality is dramatically improved, and then also look for small options like night vision (seen by looking in the Audi logo for a camera) and the matrix lights they help a lot! For the quality question it’s great we had a d3 before which lasted over 270 thousand miles with only the basic maintenance the speed is also good we regularly hit 250 kilometers per hour on the German autobahn with not problem (max speed limited) and it has 250 horsepower which is enough for us but ofcourse it’s nice to have the v8 tdi If you have any further questions you can always ask! :)

This is a fantastic video! This video helped me to find an 2013 Audi A8 3.0T Quattro in excellent condition and prepared me for repairs that were needed after a few months of ownership. I love this car and I do not regret it. Leather, massage seats, air suspension, supercharger, all wheel drive...amazing!!!
Do you still have the Audi? How has it been doing? I'm thinking about buying one. Do you recommend it?
Bought a 2011 A8 4.2 with 104,000 miles and I love it! Did a carfax and it has always been serviced at audi which made me feel comfortable with buying it. Love it!
Hows the car holding up?
@@NateDiaz29 it held up great but I just traded it for a 2010 BMW M3 with 65,000 miles. It honestly doesnt compare to the quality, comfort or luxury of the A8 but it has a much higher value which is the only reason I traded.

can you please tell me when to change the timing chain, belt tensioner, water pump, thermostat, harmonic balancer/flywheel???
Also is electronic power steering a common issues in these cars ? How to avoid that
@@johnysilvester8483 Update?? i am about to buy an a8l tdi
Thank you for listing the common problems! This will help me understand what to expect when buying a used A8.
I have the S8 and I am very pleased with my choice. I have no problem so far for 30,000 km. The vehicle is currently on 200,000 km.
Thank you for video!
How to fix jerk shifting on 2015 4.0 A8L?
* Jerk shifting 1-3 gear up shift and down shift.
* It's got a smooth down shifting when braking it is jerking when the car is slowing down it self on low RPM.
this problem can occur for various reasons like:
-because of some issue in the engine
-low oil level in the gearbox
-old/dirty oil in the gearbox - the dirt can clogg the mechatronics unit
-because of old gearbox software - so occasionally a software update can help
-sometimes faulty gearbox mechatronics unit
--worn torque converter
-or rarely even the low battery voltage can cause these issues
all in all, first I would scan the car for fault codes with a good OBD scanner, if there are no fault codes then I would change the oil in the gearbox if it has never been changed + properly clean the mechatronics unit
I’m having the same issues with my 2016 4.0 A8L
Amazing reviews, than you for the good work!
Start stop not operational
Keyless entry fault
Start Stop button not working
Fault with air conditioning
Engine belt snapped in 2019 very expensive to fix.
Probably go back to an A6 next year.
What year a6
@@Mr1bigsalnot sure about his Audi, but my 2007 A6 C6 3.2 FSI got me to 250 000 km. It's been a fantastic car, definitely some maintenance, cam girldles seal, timing tensioners and some other minor ones, it's been a fantastic car. Trade it for a 2015 A8L 3.0 TDI, so far no issues at all, car has only 43000 km.
i have a 2013 facelift a8l 4.2 tdi and had water leak brought it to a shop to change the windshield now that adaptive cruise or whatever its named doesnt work but i dont care I never used it anyway
you need to get it aligned again. cost is around $300 USD at the dealer.

Is the 6.3 W12 similar to the old W12, but just bored out to a bigger size? If so I presume the A8 6.3 is quite reliable as well? Albeit with higher running costs than the V8s
the new one has over the old one direct injection and cylinder deactivation.
Extremely reliabile.
Test drove a 2017 A8L 4.0 T and there was a whistle under acceleration. Sound like radio interference but it wasn’t. Is this normal?
is it worthy to buy 2012 audi a8l 62000 miles $ 25000.00
yes
Yes lol I just got one for 36k with 27,000miles
I’m lookin @ a couple lol
Fantastic review.
Keep it up.
Are you from China ?
Awesome video. Very helpful when considering my next car. Keep up the good work.
Is the air-suspension reliable for the not good road such as bumpy road ?
most problems are from humid climate with drop below freezing since people never service the air dryer and it sends water into the air spring. it later freeze and burst the air springs over time.
It is not reliable compare to W222
Which engine is the most reliable in them ;
can you please tell me when to change the timing chain, belt tensioner, water pump, thermostat, harmonic balancer/flywheel???
On diesel engines
Also is electronic power steering a common issues in these cars ? How to avoid that
It is around £18.000 in UK the facelift with 70k Miles , it looks great wow
Yeah they are not bad for what they are going for. The S8 are going from £28 - £40k which is cheap for something made from 2013. Only thing which would deter me from this car is the repair costs most likely would be high but if you'd get it as a weekend car or do little mileage in it then most likely things won't wear out sooner.
Great review! Can you tell me the difference between 3.0 tfsi before and after the face lift
Only problem with my A8 4.2 FSI 2012 V8 is a fuel leak from the rear. We have to see if its a hose or a clip….I belive there was a recall in europe but not in North america for this issue.
How is the 6.3 L W12 for maintenance? I'm considering getting on. It will be used though. What is your opinion on that?
it is a massive and quite complicated engine, but the good thing is that it doesn't have turbochargers and it doesn't have serious problems either
however the maintenance of this engine can be very expensive, for example if you have oil or coolant leaks, then in most of the cases you have to remove the whole engine to just replace some gaskets or eventually some sensors
the overall reliability also depends on the actual mileage of the car and the previous maintenance
if you do the preventive maintenance in time-like changing the spark plugs, filters, all the fluids, then you can avoid a lot of possible problems
Thank you So much for all those Valuable information ✅
Thomas Smith Jr Do it. The 12 cylinder is quite reliable (especially naturally aspirated) which the 6.3 W12 is.
Maintenance is important, but if it is well kept, their are solid cars.
Also, you get 507hp and silky smooth power delivery :)
Your reviews are ALWAYS very help... Thanks Guv'na!!!
Almost feels like your in a standard and you forgot to shift.
could you please post a video about S6, S7, S8, RS7 4.0 TWIN TURBO ENGINE EQUIPPED MODELS?
One of my dream cars that im gonna add it to my collection next time is the S8 D4 xD
The pre-facelift is waaaay nicer than facelift. Very rare in automotive world.

@@AugustZabladowski personal opinions
Thinking of getting a 2015 4.0TFSI A8. Milege is at 25k. Are there any things that i should look out for ?
what is the best used... bmw or the audi ?
I have the hybrid version. Look out for the front suspension because mine got shot in 35k miles.
Because the price of an 2015 is almost double compared to the 2013.
there is not a big difference and the reliability is the same as well
Excellent review
Great review!
Is the hybrid reliable?
What is the normal service cost for Audi A8
Id like to comment on the rust issue.

On average what are good mileage on 2013-2015 A8 ? I’m looking at a few with 65,000- 80,000 miles
I have had a diesel A8 for two years which I bought used with 27,000 miles on it. Fortunately, I have had no problems at all, but I have read so many reviews in which very expensive repairs have been experienced by other owners that I think I shall probably change this car soon for a Kia Stinger petrol, which comes with a 7 year warranty!!!
Massive downgrade don’t do it. Won’t be nearly as thoroughly engineered
Are these reliable for daily driving? If so which engine is the most reliable

Do you have video on audi A8 TDI?
i can answer your questions i have a tdi L
John Doe maintenance and mpg etc. .smooth ride? Fast car? Quality? What are the premium options?
Hi, I drove an 4.2 tdi but it makes no change compared to an 740 D or 740 XD even it has 6 cilinders, so don't test an 7 F01/02 ..Ofcourse the 4.2 tdi goes very wel, it has lots of torque, consumption depends on your driving style :-) Quality is very good. Ergonimics not so good as 7 series, I drive is much better.
Ato Nympha maintenance, in the video it says you need to have a oil change every 15 thousand kilometers but it’s not true only every 30-40, the gearbox is 100% maintenance free but at higher mileage you will notice they get a bit slower (we noticed this in our d3 generation after 460 thousand kilometers) our car is the 3.0 tdi which we usually get 1 liter for 12 kilometers and lasts +- 800 km on a 90 liter tank
Premium options for safety really look for the automatic braking they are easily spotted by looking under the headlight if it’s a black ball shape it’s the sensor, it looks like a European foglight but that’s a real must have, also if you are a sound freak the b&o sound system is a must have the sound quality is dramatically improved, and then also look for small options like night vision (seen by looking in the Audi logo for a camera) and the matrix lights they help a lot! For the quality question it’s great we had a d3 before which lasted over 270 thousand miles with only the basic maintenance the speed is also good we regularly hit 250 kilometers per hour on the German autobahn with not problem (max speed limited) and it has 250 horsepower which is enough for us but ofcourse it’s nice to have the v8 tdi
If you have any further questions you can always ask! :)

Seller no service records = no buy
Seller says, yes but i don't have them. I did them at ...... audi dealer - call dealer. They will have records. If none, dont' buy
OTher than that. It sounds more like electronic things that can malfunction just like your smartphone
Suspension? Suspension is suspension. Parts are pricey but suspension work is not hard
Engines are pretty damn solid. HE told you which ones have issues so don't buy those

It was in production for 8 years, not 7. It is a math thing.

its a brain thing
Too many things on this vehicle to break
This 2010-2017 Audi is a lease only car as is the new one..... absolute endless money pit as the car reaches 100K miles....and resale price is about one eighth to one tenth of the original sales price....
