I saw Roy when I was about 8 or more years...he was in the museum. Mom and I stopped, he smiled and said hello and of corse I could not even say hi back because I was so shy! I was so nuts about him...had clothes and guns and every thing. When he died it broke my heart...I loved him so much! Good show thanks so much!!!!

I also got Roy's picture with autograph back in the 50s. If the worse thing he ever did is fake an autograph, he was still a good man.
BTW, I have a book case just like the one behind you in the video. It's at least 70 years old.

Good Morning Jeff, Back in my youth I had the good fortune of see Roy Rogers perform at the American Royal Show in Kansas City. After his performance Roy rode completely around the fence of the arena ,shaking hands with anyone that wanted to shake. Like a dumbell I didn't go greet him. Instead staying in my seat way up in the bleachers. I regret that now. Have a Great Day 😊

I met Roy Rodgers and Dale Evans years ago. That was when his museum was in Apple Valley. There was a fire that burned up his warehouse and I worked with the clean up crew. It destroyed some of his vehicles and memorabilia.

I didn't know they had a fire. I do know they moved the whole collection to Branson and then it closed. As the generations go by, fewer and fewer folks remember Roy and Dale, which is sad but I guess life goes on, doesn't it?

@@jbenziggy yes sir. The museum in Apple Valley, was before the Victorville museum. The last time I was in Apple Valley, the building was a bowling alley. Their ranch was right across the street from the museum back then. Then they moved over to the golf course. Their home had the RR on the gates. I had a friend, who was a Clamper like I am, Estanislo chapter 58. Lived right next door to Roy and Dale. I knew their nephew Jim Odell as well. But it is sad our history is being forgotten. That's one reason I enjoy your posts.

Jeff, I was fortunate to visit the museum in both Victorville and Branson. In Branson, I was able to talk to Dusty on the three occasions we visited. The day my wife and I visited the Victorville museum was December 31, 1988. When I asked a lady worker how often Roy visited the museum, she replied, "almost every day. But since today is Roy and Dale's wedding anniversary, he may not come over." He did not while we were there and I never got to meet him unfortunately.@@jbenziggy

What you said is so true. We spend money on items and in hopes the real person is giving us their real autograph. It's so sad that this happens all the time. I'm a big race fan and one of my favor drivers told me, "if you didn't get it autographed by me in person, don't believe one you buy or send away for"! Reality hit me right then and there. Thanks for the great video Jeff.

Excellent information, Jeff. Like you, I would have had no idea. I understand your frustration and disappointment. I realize it happens but when the autograph request is sent and paid for and you later find out it was signed by someone else representing the person, it's such a letdown. I suppose the best way to know for sure is to get the autograph in person or not at all. That way, there is no doubt. Thanks for another great video!

I feel your pain Jeff. When I was a kid in 1970, I wrote a letter to my hero Roman Gabriel. A few weeks later I got an autographed, black & white photo of him. I treasured that photo thinking it was an authentic signature. I’ve seen other photos of him with the same quote “A Champion never quits”. I’ve in recent years wondered if mine was authentic. At this stage of my life (65) I’m going to just accept it as real. BTW, he’s still alive and kicking at 83! TY Jeff.

Jeff, thank you for this amazing video! Quick story for you.
In the late 70s and 80s, I worked for Director Sydney Pollack. I knew Paul Newman‘s secretary and she told me a funny story. There was a woman who reached out for Paul Newman‘s autograph. The secretary signed it for Paul and send it to the fan. The fan sent it back and said “This is not his autograph. May I please have an authentic autograph?” So she signed it again for Paul and the woman sent the autograph back and said, “I know this second one is not his autograph as well!”
So the secretary had Paul sign it after the third request and sent it out to the fan. The fan sent a letter back, saying “Thank you so much for the authentic Autograph of Mr. Newman…”
Don’t ever fool an autograph seeker! 😂

Back in those days I used to always attend the annual Lone Pine Film Festival. One year in the early 90s I had heard that Roy Rogers would sign an autograph if i would just send something to Apple Valley. I got two eight by ten glossies and sent them to him. They were returned to me with Roy's autograph. In playing this video I have found I was deceived. I have been bragging to friends when I go into my pool room about Roy's autograph. I was fortunate to ride the same bus when we toured he Alabama Hills. I sat with him and we talked all day. Of coarse I became friends with him and quit the fan. I have bought a few of his autographs on Ebay. One for Gone With The Wind the other as Lucky on the Hoppy films. I sure hope they are authentic. My dad used to take me and my friends to Corriganville. Corriganville is the location that the TV show Rin Tin Tin was filmed. Rand Brooks was a part of that cast. Fort Apache is the fictional location where Rin Tin Tin was based. Today it has burned down and there are Condos right up to where the front gates stood.

Unless you personally witnessed the autograph being signed, the possibility of a forged signature is a reality. I worked in the office of a well known firearms training school, where the owner required us to practice making his signature on all welcome letters going out to new members. Because we had tens of thousands of members, hundreds arriving every day; it would have been physically impossible for the owner to have signed each letter personally. It felt unethical; but people really bought into it, to the point of buying memberships worth thousands of dollars. It was just business!

Although my late Auntie Gloria, the film/TV actress, was known as a "scream queen" for the quartet of horror films in which she appeared in, she should've been primarily been renowned regarding the numerous Western-based genre works that she did. And there's no exception here being that she had a role in an episode of "The Roy Rogers Show" seventy yrs back entitled "Land Swindle".

That is really sad about all the autographs you obtained only to find out they were fake. But I have to say you are a very talented artist.

The only way to guarantee that a signature is authentic is to get whatever you want signed in person.

Unfortunately, that's a common practice. Even with sports figures. A lot of them are so good, it does even fool the experts. I'm not an autograph collector, but I do have some signatures from celebrities. The ones I have were signed in front of me. It means more to me to have my picture taken with them. Better than a signature, I think.

That was common back then, later they had autograph machines that you would program your autograph into and it would sign anything perfectly. Some athletes used them.

    • @jbenziggy
      @jbenziggy  4 місяці тому

Most actors did not have those Autopen machines because they were expensive. I guess it was cheaper to have a secretary do the duty deed.

Jeff... It is so disappointing to learn that movie stars have someone else sign autographs. The big thing now that really annoys me is these conventions that has been stars attend. From what I understand there is an entrance fee. Then you have to pay the star to autograph something. There is an additional fee to have a picture taken with them.

Thank you, Jeff. Roy's autobiography is a great read. Take good care. Have you been to the Ozzie, Harriet, and Ricky Nelsons graves at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, California? When his elder son David died in 2011, he was cremated, having chosen a niche in Westwood Memorial Park's outdoor Garden of Serenity columbarium rather than interment in the Nelson family plot. I wonder why they are in different locations? All the very best to you and yours!!!

Wow! How sad. But I agree with you if a celebrity doesn't want to autograph then they should not have someone else do it.
I only have two autographs, one from Pat Morita and William Fransanito. I was present both times. Great share.

Hello Jeff, certainly very disappointing when this type of thing happens. Just feels like a con. I get the fact celebrities cannot sign everything, so just say so. Anyway, life moves on. Thank you for educating everyone Jeff.

I understand how it is disappointing to not have the real signature. I've been watching a lot of Roy Rogers videos this last week, and was thinking it would be interesting if you could go to some of the places his movies were filmed in. I don't know if you want to do that at the moment though, considering your disappointment in not getting the real signatures.

All famous and very popular celebrites either have their secretaries sign their name or they use an electronic signature. They are too busy and get too many requests fir autographs to do them them selves.

I'm sorry that was the case. Generally he was wonderful to his fans at the museum. Much better than most celebrities today. I could send you an autographed photo of ME. My secretary won't sign it as I don't have a secretary. I've never signed a photo of me before so you would have one of the most exclusive signed photos INTHE WORLD.

Sucks being bamboozled like that👎🏼. I've seen that on Pawn Stars, when a signature is authenticated, and it's not legit. I mean, it's a celebrity's option, I guess. But, fraudulent for the fans, a major bummer.
