    I bought one of these from Sportsmans Guide a couple of years ago. Fun kit. Once, I fried 2 Italian sausages in one pan, warmed up a red sauce in the other and boiled water for pasta in the pot, all over a Svea 123. Bellissima.
    Unfortunately, I broke the stud off one of my pans. I had a strap around the side holding the panhandles on, and it fell off the shelf, hit at the wrong angle and popped it. I may try aluminum brazing it back on, or fill the hole with a screw to match the stud length. Or buy a new one from the Guide.
    Enjoyed your video.

      HootOwl513 it is a great kit. Sounds like that was a great meal you made. I think the kits are still available so you could replace it. But repairing it might be fun too. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    Do you prefer stainless steel or aluminum mess kits? Or does it depend what type of cooking you're doing- like boiling or frying?

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  3 роки тому

      I prefer stainless just because of the durability and the ease of keeping clean. But they have come a long ways with anodized aluminum cookware. I have a couple of hiking sets made of those which have worked well. The newest thing in the last few years is titanium cookware because it is durable and light weight. But unfortunately it costs a lot more to buy and I don’t personally own any of this type.
      It really depends on what you like and if you need ultra lite or not. And also the size of your budget. I hope this answers your question.

      It was a great day. Soon it will be so humid in that river swamp that you won't be able to stand the cooking fire! And no matter how many stumps I check, I never find refreshing beverages like you. I once found a old bottle of prune juice though ;)
      There was a lot of blow-downs in the river from the last hurricane. That section of river is in-passable by canoe and hard to fish without getting hung up. Thanks for watching another one!

    It's great to see a little of your environment as I've never been in that particular one. Ahhh, the Italian mess kit is the one that got away, I was bidding on one at the same time as the French WW2 marked one, got the French one, the Italian one got way over it's worth so let it go. It looks a great little kit! Got some of the adult Soviet gas mask holders for next to nothing, they're very good with Crusader type kits. Thanks for the vid!

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS

      I never realized until recently how much people enjoy seeing what most of the Florida woods is like. I thought most would think it was boring. I'm glad I'm able to include some scenery for you all. As for the Italian kit, I'm sure you will find one soon. I can't remember where I got mine. I think it was about a year ago. When I get ready for a Crusader kit one day, I might contact you with links to sets I'm interested in and let you tell me (if you want) if they are authentic before I buy. Thanks for watching another video and good luck with your growing collection!

    • @jelkel25
      @jelkel25 6 років тому

      Yes, what's boring and everyday to you is new and rare to others as regards your woods. I've only bought a Dutch army NCB (nuclear chemical biological) type canteen and pouch recently, it's waterproof which will be handy on British moorland like Dartmoor, it can be very wet there even in summer. I'll get the Italian kit eventually! No problem with the Crusader stuff, it's usually the canteen that's fake, outside of the 1985 Osprey canteen (it has a small sun on the front) all the real ones should say Osprey on them with a date of manufacture.

    hey John...would you recommend the Czech mess kit or this Italian kit?

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  5 років тому +1

      Miles D personally I like the Czech kit better but they are both great kits. It also really depends on what kind of cooking you are doing. I might also like it better because I have so many different German style mess kits. The Czech kit is pretty compact and is great because of the two pots and plate/lid you get with it. It’s great for cooking sauces, rice dishes, stews, soups and other foods for one or two people. You can even fry a little with the lid/plate. But the down side is you can’t hang any of the pieces over the fire like the Italian kit. I’m not sure if the large pot of the Italian kit has more volume than the large pot of the Czech kit. I can’t check it at this time as I have the Italian kit stored in vacuum food bag along with other kits and canteens in my garage. But I think the Italian kit might be better to boil water for drinking because of its shape. I hope this answers your question.

    Tell john to get a yo-yito fishing wheel. Great for survival and u dont have to drag that huge fishing rod around and thru the woods. Getting hung up on everything. Yo-yito fits in ur pocket. U should do a review on this. Great piece of kit to have in your bag

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 років тому

      Scout Sniper The rod he had in the video was telescopic. It fit right in his backpack. I have one too but I forgot to pack it. I also have four of those yo-yo reels. Only used them once on a kayak camping trip on the Ocklawaha River. Had no luck with them but it was a bad fishing weekend because the river was muddied up from the downpours we had the day before. I will give them a try again one day. Maybe on my next camping and fishing trip.

      I didn't include that footage because I didn't think it was interesting so here's how I did it. I used the spare cup and put it on top of the pot with the bottom of the cup facing the pot and with gloves on I tipped the pot and cup and drained the water out while holding the noodles in with the cup. Nothing fancy. Just had to do it fast before my gloves got too hot!
