    When I briefly trained in Thailand I was told to use the teep to basically counter everything, which showed me just how useful that strike is.

      Agreed, and thats what he said in the video, but its the situation of both landing strikes at the perfectly same time where the muay thai theory will work.

      Yes it can happen, but we're talking about inherent advantages of one over the other when the condition he mentioned are true. What you're mostly seeing that makes you think you're right is cases where one is in range and the other isn't OR they aren't thrown at approximately the same time.

    I'm pretty sure u have it mixed up a bit...
    I am almost positive it's:
    - Kick beats Punch (all thai favor kicks to punch ((Ref: Changpuek vs Ruffus))
    - Elbow beats Kick;
    - Knee beats Elbow
    - Teep beats Knee (or Teep beats them all)

    Something i do to against someone good at counters is either use a sneaky front leg that is close to him and suddenly full weight back and the kick lands... Or...kick but pulling back so i can still kick with distance but i create enough immediate distance so that the punches cant reach 😁

    Shane, would you say TJ is the best MMA striker of all time? Below average range & height even for his division, average power and speed but he strikes masterfully still. All the other "great" strikers have very long arms and unbelievable power.

    • @fighttips
      @fighttips  Рік тому

      No, this just an example if punch beating kicks. Good kickers like the names you mentioned made a career out of kicking forearms to shut down big punchers.
      This rock paper scissors metaphor is more so a tip for dealing with certain styles.
      Hope this makes sense!

  • @gthreesix

    Hands protecting head when kicking isn’t proper Muay Thai form though.
    So do we break form?
    I am new so does that affect points or rules?

    • @fighttips
      @fighttips  Рік тому +3

      "Effective striking" is mostly scored based upon its effects. So if a match is even and you throw a kick that lands flush on the ribs, disrupting your opponents balance, and you remained balanced the whole time, you have taken the lead.
      Keeping the hands up wouldn't take away from points.
      But if you fell backwards while throwing it, from a punch that your opponent hit you with on your arm, the judges may give that point to your opponent, even if your kick landed.

    • @fighttips

    I think this might be the true meaning of the phrases Wing Chun counterpart "kicks above the hip destabilize you": kicks are riskier than punches, so chances are the punch wins (instead of "never kick", which is how the phrase is usually interpreted)

    I dig it. My MMA coach drills us with little things like this all the time. Counters, keep your defense whilst throwing, and being the one who ups the game by defeating our opponent's strikes with a proper response.
    He told us something today that I love: "Be first and third." Meaning be the one who starts the exchange, and the one who ends it.
