If you look at the wall, there are two portal surfaces above the conveyors. My guess is, it was for testing the handheld quantum tunneling device aka portal gun, by passing a box from one conveyor, through the portal, and out the second.
The reason why the captions look big is because the Steam Deck update changed the way how captions are displayed on different screen resolutions, including other HUD elements. The version you downloaded was before I patched the caption scaling. If you don't want the big captions, you'll have to redownload the mod with the captions fixed. Also, you can sprint in this version of the mod, but to use the flashlight, you would have to press the "J" button (or "H") to enable the flashlight. Now you don't need to do that anymore, and the file has been updated again so you only need to press the "F" button to turn on the flashlight. (if the flashlight binding doesn’t show up as the F key by default, make sure that binding is set to the F key, like in Half-Life 2.) This mod was also released on 2012, so I presume this mod was made after the release of Portal 2.

Fun Fact: the servers in the Server Room Puzzle are real HP ProLiant DL380 G6/G7s. I actually own one. The attention to detail is actually pretty insane.

the thing with rusin games and mods in general: they make them unnescessairly complicated and/or have like 1000 extra steps to it. I learned this when installing fallout 3 FROST and the guide the maker made forwarded me trough 3 websites before it landed me on the full install guide, after i tried to run the mod 3 times already i had to realize every time that there are a more complete more detailed guide is linked somewhere usually hidden in some drop down menu or something. + the author dosent fail to mock you every time you launch the mod with incomplete install.

I love how a lot of these alt-canon campaigns always forget one thing: The Gravity Gun was invented by Mossman, Eli and co. Barring the one installed on DOG, it is literally the only Gravity Gun in existence (I'm not really certain how the gloves from Alyx come into play) Every single alt-canon campaign I've seen in the HL2 universe (and the Portal one) consistently forget that fact and give the (non-Gordon) MC the Gravity Gun and it's kinda funny. That, or they'll have Gordon "lose" the Gravity Gun (or have it destroyed) only for him to magically find a new one. Though, thinking about this makes me wonder, is Chell's Portal Gun the only one? I'd like to think it is given what it can do, but at the same time Aperture Science (and GLaDOS) were doing testing regarding portals, so... Mind you, the old Testing Chambers(tm) each had their own test, so maybe it is the only one.

Aside from that, i strongly doubt that they made the test chambers with only one portal gun in mind, especially since many voicelines and the Long Fall Boot video imply that the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device is a mass produced product, like the turret (although *probably* not commercially available, like the turret)
