    Interesting to see the reaper in its earlier stage before it stabilised into the gnarly form we all know love and fear today. Likely tastes just the same but it's cool what just a few generations of selective cultivation can do.

    Surprising that seeds from 2013 were able to germinate, grow and near fruits in 2018, that is five years old. I won't throw away my old seeds. Better to experiment. Great education indeed.

    Excellent video, I appreciate the scientific methodology and the time investment of a full growing season. At least one of those reapers looked pretty much like a scotch bonnet. I’ve always been a little suspect about the whole reaper origin story. If what the creator claims is true about getting a much hotter strain from crossing two lower strength strains, then instability is in the cards. This is my first year growing reapers (3 plants) and the fruits are much more variable than my 4 ghost plants. I suspect the Trinidadian super hots would be more stable since there are mainly land race strains.

    I'm growing reapers for the first time this year and the plant was purchased at Lowe's labeled something along the lines of smoking Ed's Carolina Reaper. My peppers are about half and half as far as tails go but they're all bumpy. I'm going to save seeds from ones with stingers only and replant next year. Interested to see if all the peppers will be more true to form.

    Interesting. I found this vid at the right time. I thought I was going crazy. I purchased some seeds from PBPC (the source so to speak for this seed) and to my surprise had 2 distinct plants. One had fruits identical to your #2 and significantly bigger pods than the other. The other plant produces pods like your #3 and 4 but they are half the size of the first plant I mentioned. Similar issue with habanero plants. Seeds from the same pod produced one plant that made dark green fruit and the other looks like a white grape color. I am curious how they will ripen and if it will differ as well.

  • @francoisdebruyn4424

    Hi, do the variations taste the same. SHU levels.
    If you plant seeds from.. those that look right, how will the next season look like, or can they yet bounce back to the funny shapes.

    • @7PotClub
      @7PotClub  5 місяців тому

      Once a variety is stabilized, most of the pods will look the same. That can take many generations. But sometimes other shapes (phenotypes) will sometimes appear. SHU levels can also vary between pods on the same plant. Again, the more stable the variety, the more consistent the heat level.

What i can say is that i was able to contact pepper joes thst was the supplier of my seeds, and they told me they looked most like reapers. As you can imagine the greatwst source of my comfusiin is how they look exactly like yours of the original strain, but i i had purchased them this year 12 years after their development and stabalised establishment. Now i like to think of the romantic notion thst somehow i had obtained a portion of the original gemetics, but of course that is extremely unlikey. So in your experiemce or expert opinion, is it plausibke that the seeds could still remain viable for such a long period of time and i had obtained someones caulted antique collection? Or possibley maybe the strain still isnt all that stable and can revert back to the original parent genetics occasionally?
      Ps; i do have lots of photos just in case, and one is twisted and knarly so that it looks like a dragonfy's face (definately saving the seeds from thst one.)

    I'm not sure if some of my reapers cross pollinated. I started with a true one I got from a nursery, I had it planted in the ground, but decided I wanted to keep it so I dug it up and put it in a pot. It survived 1 winter but died the next. From it I gathered seeds and started 4 or 5 plants. I'm down to 3 now due to unfavorable winters in a less than favorable storage area. One plant is a perfect reaper, its now 3 years old I believe, and 2 are sometimes reaper like (tail 75% of the time, but usually not very pointy and very smooth). I think they cross pollinated with my 5 year old Butch T Scorpion. Is there any way to really tell besides buy some new seeds from a trusted website?
    Heat wise its not really a concern, but I've separated my true reaper this year so I can take seeds from it that I know won't cross pollinate with the Butch or the imperfect reapers. And when I say true reaper, every pepper on it has the blistered skin and a very "sharp" needle like tail.

    • @7PotClub
      @7PotClub  5 років тому

      I've been growing Reapers since 2013. As far as I'm concerned, the variety has never fully stabilized, and a variety of shapes and surfaces is really the norm, probably because of the recessiveness or dominance of various genes from the parents. I have used seeds from several sources, and almost never have I grown a plant with totally consistent pods. So I don't necessarily think your plants have cross pollinated. You might want to watch my video from last year about this. ua-cam.com/video/3M7uyqgrNag/v-deo.html

    Please take the time to view the mmcdermott2 video on the Truth Behind the Carolina Repear Part I & II. 2000+ plants from 2013 less than 2% variability. He was the only authorized grower outside of Puckerbutt in 2013 and only Ed was authorized to sell seeds at that time.
    Also, before making such broad claims please take the time to show the provenance of your seeds. You went halfway but failed to close the gap. When did the company you rerference acquire the seeds? Where did they get the seeds?
    When looking at your plants verses those that were purchasing their seeds through authorized vendors we see a very different story emerging.

    • @7PotClub
      @7PotClub  5 років тому +1

      I appreciate your passion, but I reviewed what I said in this video and I only reported my personal experience growing some seeds I purchased and I did not make any broad claims. From the video: "I know there has been controversy surrounding the development of the Carolina Reaper by Ed Currie. But I’ve never really paid much attention and won’t be addressing that here."
      I've always gone out of my way to say that I am not an expert about plant phenotypes. Peter Merle from Semillas La Palma is well respected in the pepper community and I suggest you contact him if you want to know about where he obtained seeds back in 2013. I am a hobby grower and I do this for fun, not controversy. Cheers! 😀

      @@7PotClub been digging over at thehotpepper
      BTW - the entire thread is a fabulous read.
      It appears as though Semillas knew he got unstable seeds back in 2013 b/c him and McDermott were having a bit of a flame war about strain stability about the time "The Truth" vidoes were published.
      Semmillas got 30 seeds for the 2013 season. He posted pictures of his results and they were all across the board. He asked Ed for 1000 seeds and was sold 30. He goes as far as to say that he was happy he didnt get 1000 seeds "because I would have a lot of trouble with my customers."
      From what can tell Semillas then gave away seeds that he KNEW were unstable reapers with seed purchases.
      Semillas then went on to sell the seeds commercially despite the following legal disclamer:
      "B. Seed Purchases
      Seeds purchased through PBPC, LLC, or its affiliates, along with plants and peppers grown therefrom, shall be used for personal and non-commercial purposes only. Any reproduction or redistribution of seeds or plants therefrom, or commercial use of peppers grown from these seeds, or derivatives thereof, is prohibited without the express written consent of PBPC, LLC, or its affiliates. In so purchasing seeds through PBPC, LLC, or its affiliates, you expressly agree to these terms and conditions of sale."
      But he so goes on to state that US trademark law doesn't apply to him b/c he sells from overseas.
      This enough to show that Semillas was being a bad faith actor when he gave seeds to you. You got unstable seeds.
      I keep following the thread to see if Pepper Joe or Ed ever address any of the concerns as it appears as though Semillas was not alone in getting unstable seeds.
      And moving down the forum it appears as though the unstable seeds might have come from pepper joe. Not 100% but it is definately implied.
      Statement from Pepper Joe:
      "Pepper Joe stepped in and was a staunch supporter of Ed's....and we took most of that heat in the early days. Smokin' Ed didn't answer back on the Blogs. Ed had his reasons for that and that is between him and the Chilehead community."
      If Pepper Joe "took the heat" that sounds to me like they are at fault. I doubt they would have put their reputation on the line. Ed was selling and distributing the seeds for Joe so even if somebody bought the seeds from Ed they might have gotten some bad Joe peppers.

    Did you ever do the taste test of these early generation smoother Reapers?

      I did, but not on camera. There were both types on the same plant, and I compared. No difference in taste.

    Hello. Wow that was interesting. I didn't know about the controversy and boy those peppers can look different. Them bumpy one sure are bit on the ugly side. Now how could you do a taste test between them peppers because after you take the first bite....are you able to taste anything except pain ? 😂. My this years few plants all came from last years seeds so I didn't spend any money buying new seeds. Hi Freddy 👋. Thanks 👍😀

    • @7PotClub
      @7PotClub  6 років тому +1

      I always get the flavor before the pain. I think it works better if you always have some food after you get the taste of the pepper and before the heat kicks in. I don't know why I love peppers. It certainly is not rational! Freddy says hi!

      Oh really. I have tasted hot pepper one time and it sure was experience ! I am also a pepper lover but the sweet kind. I have wanted to grow few spicy peppers for awhile so maybe next year I'll try few. What would you recommend growing ? Do you use yours in cooking too or just for the hot sauces ?

    • @7PotClub
      @7PotClub  6 років тому +1

      I would start out with jalapeno or serrano and work up from there. My wife is an excellent cook and she uses peppers in many dishes. We freeze them and eat them all year!

    • @PaiviProject
      @PaiviProject 6 років тому +1

      Oh I have grown both of those once...least the jalapeno but they are boring I want to try something totally different. What is the pepper that has great taste & unique look and the one you guys use the most ? 'cause I want to go all out...like overboard 😂 that's how I roll 😂. Sorry if I'm pain in a bottox 😇👋

      Then try Ari Charpita. Tiny but very hot. When dried and ground, supposedly the most valuable pepper in the world!

    How do I tell which plants are female?

    • @7PotClub
      @7PotClub  4 роки тому

      Hi Erin! Like tomatoes and many other plants, peppers don't have gender. They're self-pollinating. So, that's one less thing to worry about when growing capsicum. 😀🌶🌱

    My reaper seeds came from puckerbutt in 2016. The same plant will put out perfect looking bumpy reapers with big stingers, and red hab looking pods right next to them! The ones that looks like habs still very much taste like reapers.
