From my favorite album when I was a very troubled and confused younger man, who found resonance of his sadness and comfort for his soul in this beautiful music.. should.. 30 years later (how time flies) all is balanced, time heals all wounds, and I listen to this with sweet melancholy.. Should you be troubled now, hang in there, and trust that in the end, all will be well..
I was in college when this album was released. Twenty eight years gone by in what sometimes feels like a blink of an eye and other times feels like a lifetime.
Discovered this song sitting in a motel parking lot on the Oregon Coast. It was night, it was pouring outside. I was reflecting on a love that wasn't meant to last. F. It gets me every time.
I think he kinda taps into a weird headspace when performing. He has a dissociative disorder, and it really seems like he dissociates when singing and lets the music flow through him with no thoughts interfering with that process.
My mother was dying of cancer when I frst heard this song,She was called Anne and it the line" I'm not ready for this sort of thing" was sooooo true at the time.
I have the feeling this is actually a key moment in music history. I can't think of a better performed song, even considering the biggest bands. Amazing, simply amazing.
Adam rarely does one of his own songs the same way, and it's sometimes hit or miss. This is basically the best I've ever heard him create a new song with the same lyrics. He usually changes the lyrics and the tempo, and the phrasing only to a slight extent. This is simply a different song, every bit as good, and perhaps better than the "original." This is a well thought out reinterpretation, rather than his usual spontaneous improvisation. It was a good day in a studio with the right vibe. You couldn't do this on stage.
I would give anything just to watch this live, so beautiful and emphasized I can’t even comprehend how this song makes me feel. It literally blows me away. I don’t understand this society what happened to music how to you listen to pop and rap when there’s people like Adam duritz on this earth. Feckin incredible.
Put the headphones on 30 years to listen to their debut album and have been mesmerised ever since. Will be seeing them for the 5th time at Byron Bay in Easter 2023. Wow what a performance
Dude, do you know ANYTHING about him and why we (his fans) love him so much?? It is exactly the reason that you are questioning. He can sing a song that he wrote 20 years ago and put as much emotion, maybe even more in some cases, into it today as he did the day he wrote it. He is truly a brilliant artist. One of a kind.
Wow, I am not sure what is more nostalgic? The music? Those crazy baggy pants? Or mpg formats! Or as "Bowling For Soup" Said: _"Music still on MTV?"_ Or how he made mustaches like that look cool, which people now-a-days are having a really hard time with. On a serious note, this is one of the best vocal _"Show of"_ performances I've heard in a long time. He rarely bangs out all of the notes in live shows because...idk why because he obviously can. It's kinda funny because I've heard so many people try to sound like him, or just sing the songs in a similar style and they simply can't. Like the way he says _"maybe"_ at 3:28 or _"I am not worried"_ at 3:36-3:38. Those notes with that tone are just so difficult to emulate. Good grief, it's like the emotion just overflows from him, into the speakers like a tidal wave before crashing like a gentle ripple. Man he nails it.
IMHO this is their best album. I've grown to treasure this band. Their material is consistently good, and when they play live they give each song a whole new feel. Great stuff!!
Performances like these are once in a lifetime. I haven't witnessed this myself but this really takes me to that very moment. Outstanding in its authenticity.
Nah man, he does it cause he just live improvs it. If youve ever been in just such a groove in a song that you can make it sound good in anyway possible.. its a very energetic and alive feeling to just get into it.. hes the most artistic and almost poetic lyricist ive ever heard, if not the best then top 3 all time
What a beautiful songs that I never listen to, embarrassingly enough. I love the Counting Crows but I never heard this song before today. It’s spectacular.
Seems a lot of the newer listeners want their music & songs Macdonald style while the connoisseurs always enjoy the flair of the chef. Excellent live rendition of a timeless classic from AD & CC. Imagine hearing this song as a butchered version… impoverished listeners are so heartbreakingly sad. For all the effort, the reaching out and reaching in some stay lost in them selves. 2024 dang near thirty years hence! Thanks Adam, a light in the darkness that was my own adolescent angst. So happy you made it through too.
Definitely my favorite version. It's the only one that rivals the original, and most days I think it's better. Wish he would have continued to perform like this, instead of the mostly talking style he adapted
I think it probably has mostly to do with the original is done in a studio where they perfect it and he's in an atmosphere that keeps his emotions in check. During live performances, he's able to really get into it and make it more about the emotions tied to the song whcih makes it sound different. It's also what makes their live performances so great to so many people, too. At least for me.
His song I guess, doesn't mean you have to like it. We all would agree the original was a great song or we wouldn't be looking at it, but for me I'll take the studio version over this any day
I've liked Counting Crows from the moment I heard Mr Jones, instant fan, have most of their albums and even now I play them in the car from time to time, I just think Adam is trying to hard to be artistic tbh and it doesn't work for me.
Legend has it that there was once was a time when Adam actually sang the beautiful melodies he and the band originally wrote in a live performance, but most scholars dismiss such tales as mere flights of fancy.
Thank you.I´m happy to find this video on yt because this was the moment when i fell in love with cc. somewhere in the middle of the 90´s. ...o.k. i´m not happy when i hear this song but it makes me feel so incredible sad and this is what is music sometimes for...to feel and to cry ...if you want....
On my 16th birthday I received my first kiss from a girl named Anna who I of course was infatuated with. That night I heard this song in a way I never knew music could affect me. It seeped into my soul and while the "love" I felt for the girl eventually faded, my love for this song deepened.
This is me when I've been crossfading with beer and weed and now I'm singing this shit perfectly on key because I've been doing it for decades when I'm in my cups. Duritz kinda has a seizure near the end here, but the studio version is a perfect expression of my late teens, and early adulthood with the uncertainty and awe it possessed. Life was harsh and lonely and beautiful and this song brings it all back every time.
Such an awareness of the emotional content, I mean the ability to get it accross without sticking to the studio version. Deep awareness and performance ability on the whole bands part. counting crows has always been up there with me, but I'm loving you more as we all age.
From my favorite album when I was a very troubled and confused younger man, who found resonance of his sadness and comfort for his soul in this beautiful music.. should.. 30 years later (how time flies) all is balanced, time heals all wounds, and I listen to this with sweet melancholy.. We have traveled some of the same footsteps
this is the most beautiful song ive ever heard, and it becomes more beautiful every time I listen to it.
that's the point :)
have you heard this song on the album Amanda? live is shit, album is beautiful
william walsh actually I prefer this version. so much more feeling.
william walsh .
Once you truly get this song you realize how special it really is......not his best version but that's Adam
I was in college when this album was released. Twenty eight years gone by in what sometimes feels like a blink of an eye and other times feels like a lifetime.

They’re not meant to last sometimes my friend. Sometimes we just have to be glad they happened.
I’m from Oregon. I know those rainy nights.
❤
Every time she sneezes, I think it's love.
Lol 😂
perhaps one of the most beautifly intimate lines ever written...
@@denniscash4072for me it’s “and every word is nonsense, but I understand”
He is brilliant! They way he evokes emotion. It's as if he is not singing but telling a story. He's so passionate! Ahh it makes me so happy
I think he kinda taps into a weird headspace when performing. He has a dissociative disorder, and it really seems like he dissociates when singing and lets the music flow through him with no thoughts interfering with that process.
After all these years since 1994, I still listen to this album.
He speaks to so many of us. How he puts into words an experience many of us have had, but could not express.
So true. Regrettably
Yes. Thats all i have to say
My hands down favorite song from Counting Crows. Just magnificent writing and amazing singing.
Back when MTV actually had music. Imagine that!
etrius24 seriously... 😢
My mother was dying of cancer when I frst heard this song,She was called Anne and it the line" I'm not ready for this sort of thing" was sooooo true at the time.

the 90s were remarkable with music. And this was one of the bands

@@saywhat4464 Well said, but I think it's one in the "miss" category.
That change up he does at 4:35 gives me chills....seriously what a genius..
"her kindness bangs a gong, its moving me along".
I like how Adam can just go on with all his poems(songs) and the band is flawless to follow him. An amazing group :)
Such a beautiful interpretation of this song. Romantic and full of sensitivity. Incredible singing by Adam. Pure Artistic genius.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
one of the most beautiful songs ever created
I would give anything just to watch this live, so beautiful and emphasized I can’t even comprehend how this song makes me feel. It literally blows me away. That vocal!, underrated genius. Just fills your head & heart with soul.
Hands down, BEST version of Anna Begins live. Amazing amazing performance 🙏🏻🙌🏻
I can't stop watching it. It really is genius.
Me too
One of the greatest and most unique voices
Lyrical genius
Every word is nonsense but I understand.
Everyday
And oooh Lord...
Perfection!
We all do, friend ❤
IMHO this is their best album. I've grown to treasure this band. Their material is consistently good, and when they play live they give each song a whole new feel. Great stuff!!
This has to be one of the best songs ever wrote 😔
I've always loved this album; this track always stood out to me. Great performance!
Bret Wilson Same here even after 20+ years
He is amazingly beautiful. Love this album.
I just found a new favorite version of one of my favorite songs. Thank you.
Lacey Nerness Glad to know someone other than me likes this song! :)
Lacey Nerness one of the best lines in any song ever. “These seconds when I’m shaking leave me shuddering for days”
Yes, this is the most beautiful song ever written with the perfect lyrics. Will always be my all time favorite.
Performances like these are once in a lifetime. I haven't witnessed this myself but this really takes me to that very moment. Outstanding in its authenticity.
That CD is mine forever. I cant even get it out of the CD player
Even 2020 can sound beautiful for 5 minutes and 20 seconds. Still one of the greatest songs of all time.
I have always and will always love this song so much
this song saved my life, over and over...
love it...such beautiful lyrics and his voice is incredible...love you Adam Duritz
Amazing Passion energized with Passion, and submission to the music.. Humble Genius!
this is the most amazing version of this song, this is by far the best performance I've ever seen.
He oozes emotion.
More beautiful every time visit
!
Back when MTV provided us with gems like this, wtf has happened? I do thank you for the post, this album came out in my prime for sure.
Nah man, he does it cause he just live improvs it. too good. I miss the 90s
Charles Veitch amen brother
Didn't expect to see you here.
Wow. Sometimes I get deep into my own indie-hipster bullshit and forget how great the were.
Ryan Enis They were the best band around from 93 to 96 or 97 in my opinion. In their prime they were just unreal.
Has been my all time favorite song since it released.. that's staying power. Never heard a live version I didn't love....wow I miss them.
Talk about nailing it! 😮
They are awesome live. Adam Duritz tells a differernt version of the "story'" whenever he sings a song live. Amazing song writer and performer!
It's just a beautiful, magnificent song, been listening to it ever since it was written, a masterpiece xx
What's amazing about this song is it is so unconventional and so good. It doesn't follow the verse-chorus-verse thing, really.
There are about a half dozen live performances by CC that are the most perfect songs you will ever hear. This is one of them.
What a beautiful songs that I never listen to, embarrassingly enough. I love the Counting Crows but I never heard this song before today. It’s spectacular.
You should listen to the album version as well. Silk.
Seems a lot of the newer listeners want their music & songs Macdonald style while the connoisseurs always enjoy the flair of the chef. Excellent live rendition of a timeless classic from AD & CC.

saudades do meu irmão: Julio Cesar !!
adora ouvir esse tipo de música!!!
agora: eu em 2024 .... eu ouvindo!!!
saudades Júlio Cesar!!!!
This song is everything and so is this version. So full of emotion. Every time I hear it, it takes me somewhere else

I love this guy! Great band......great music!
This one song got me back into music after a long hiatus. Thank you.
Welcome back.
it's almost a completely different song than the studio version. So good!
way different and lost all of the melody..terrible version just wrecked a beautiful song
william walsh I agree. He changed it completely and the result is very bad.
His song I guess, doesn't mean you have to like it. We all would agree the original was a great song or we wouldn't be looking at it, but for me I'll take the studio version over this any day
We liked the original. It means we have to like it. Bad change.

What an amazing gift he has.
The vibes between this performance and 18th Floor Balcony can't be coincidence.
Speechless....... Legend
that voice. thank you CC

Absolutely brilliant performance. This is my favorite interpretation of the song.
A gentle grace with power. Amen x
Very beautiful and he sings very emotionally.
It's great how different performances sound like a new version of the song. its good.
amazing. been jamming this album since day one.
The lyrics to this song are literally genius.....
On my 16th birthday I received my first kiss from a girl named Anna who I of course was infatuated with. That night I heard this song in a way I never knew music could affect me. It seeped into my soul and while the "love" I felt for the girl eventually faded, my love for this song deepened.
gold.. Authentic ..soulfull...
What a tremendous performance. Blew me away
One of my favorite songs by them and this version is nothing but incredible.
So good every time.
He is so talented... I love this song ..
Great band.
Great song..great album
I just saw them love a few days ago in Bristow. Low energy but great emotion and musicianship. One of my favs
I'm seeing them tonight! I really hope they play this song!
Jay Martinson did they play it?
soo good.. I love singing along with adam...
This is me when I've been crossfading with beer and weed and now I'm singing this shit perfectly on key because I've been doing it for decades when I'm in my cups. oh lord, oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing
Such a great song. I relate to it so much!
soo awesome, glad this is back up on youtube
When his voice was in its prime
Kindness falls like rain...................
25th august 2022 and I still love Counting Crows 😉🤘
"Every word is nonsense, but I understand. "
" Her kindness bangs a gong, it's moving me along. "
adam's melodies are like electrons operating more in clouds of probability than in discreet positions.
this is my favorite version ❤
This is amazing!
This is a great version of this song...I love it
