Thanks Jamel for highlighting this very talented family. Unfairly compared to the Jacksons, they had their own unique style. High School Dance was another big hit from the Sylvers when I was in grade school/junior high.
FOSTER SYLVERS yes he’s the one who blasts that high pitched “Boogie Fever Babyyyyy!” during the last video. This is actually a solo effort by him but of course the family backs him up. This song was sooooo smooth….
The Sylvers were doomed to live in the shadow of The Jackson 5. Don't forget, The Osmand Brothers were also competing for the "cool young hip but squeaky clean" package that the record companies could promote.
Yesss!!! Written by Leon Sylvers, as others have pointed out - definitely have to check out "Hot Line," "High School Dance!" Leon wrote and produced for Shalamar, Lakeside, Midnight Star, The Whispers, Gladys Knight, even New Kids! And he worked with and mentored Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Teddy Riley too! What an unsung talent he is. Foster ... had some issues as an adult, for sure. Their sisters Pat and Angie are doing the backup vocals here.
One of the best drum/bass/guitar arrangements in a song. When i first heard it at age 14, I knew my choice of musical instruments (drums, guitar, and bass) were the right choices.
The beat IS awesome, but the harmony with his sisters Pat and Angie really takes "Misdemeanor" to another level. "Cotton Candy" is another favorite of mine.
It's interesting that a beat like that will be used for a whole song now, looped over and over, but back then they just gave you a taste. It makes it that much more special. Makes you want to listen again.
A talented family. You’ve already heard it! The story was supposed to be, that Leon, actually wrote that song with his brother, Edmond, in mind, but he had grown a bit. So, because his, Edmond’s voice matured, it went to Foster!!! Leon, was responsible for writing so many other’s records! Leon, was a genius!!!
This is my favorite reaction video, from the sudden recognition of the sample, to the disbelief at the connection to a song familiar to him, and finally to the joy he experiences by listening to the entire track. I was head-bobbing along with him, enjoying that this fellow was enjoying the music from my generation...
"Misdemeanor" was released and credited to Foster Sylvers as a solo artist. Yes, family members perform on the track and his brother, Leon, produced it. But technically it's not a record by "The Sylvers"
This song is one of my fav. sampled hip hop songs, and The DOC was such a beast on the mic, all before his accident. MJ and Foster Sylver was heavily compared to MJ at that age because of the voice and singing style. Big up to your sister for passing on the knowledge. My fav. reactions is when you recognize the hip hop song that was sampled from the original. There's a cool cover of "Misdemeanor" by jazz artist Ahmad Jamal, also sampled for other hip hop songs. That was sampled by DOC "Funky Enough" The Sylvers were like following a trend set by the Jackson 5 for family groups. The Osmond's were also a family group led by Donnie
