Back in the day EVERYBODY tried to grow their hair out for a _Sylvers._ Those blow out kits from Carson they used to sell gave everybody hope!! Those fros were life!!!
Sylvers had it rough. Their father abandoned them. They had to live in Watts; They all slept in one room. Olympia was kidnapped, shot up with drugs; they were going to kill her, but she got away. She was never the same. Boogie Fever got them out of that hell hole. Whenever I hear this song, I remember this.
I just cant believe their father would want to leave a beautiful wife and children. Its amazing. Both he and his wife were college educated ppl.I heard he was hanging out with Ike Turner ( need I say more) and abandoned his family. If he was still around they would probably get the proper management and be musical icons equal to the J5.
Yeah I saw that segment on unsung about them. I know exactly what housing project they was living in. It's called Nickerson gardens. Or should I say the (Knicks) when I lived in California I had a co-worker that we helped her get out of there and she moved into an apartment where I live in Long Beach, those projects and Jordan Downs. You don't even mess with them
Why does everybody always assume that because you are a big family in the music business, that you are trying to be like the Jacksons. Trust me when I say they were other family singers than just the Jacksons, luv them all!!
sorry to be off topic but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost my password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Madden Seth Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I bought the 45 of this song when it came out and I was in high school. i had their photos on my wall that I clipped from Right On magazine. Fun days. Great memories.
As much as I looooved the Jackson 5 I would NEVER bash They Sylvers they are too fine cute and talented. If things had been different with their managment and record label its no telling how much more successful they could have been.
The Sylvers were a classical R&B old school group and their classics were so phenomenal. Little Brother Foster Sylvers man so talented. High School Dance in 76 my favourite classic of theirs. RIP Brother Edmund Sylvers
Family acts were a thing back in the 70s. The Sylvers, the DeFranco family. Even the Brady Bunch had a variety show. They were a tv family but still a family😂
Some people don't know music, because they were so different from the Jackson 5 but people continue to compare them. Both groups are unique & have there own style. Now Foster & Michael sound alike, but the rest of the group of The Sylvers have a totally different sound nothing like The Jackson 5. However, both groups are different, with different style & different music!!
Thank you! To this day I see people calling them the bootleg Jackson 5. I had to check a dude once for saying that. Anytime I saw The Sylvers, I never thought The Jackson 5 at all. I just thought they were a bunch of talented and nice looking people. I enjoy their music from the first album on.
I agree !! a 100% im 19 years old, I wasn't born at that time to experience the BETTER music now a days it's just disgusting Chris brown , Beyoncé etc people always call me an old soul because I like music from my father's time. I love them they are WAY moreeeee talented than the Jacksons they have harmony and that is something the Jacksons can't compete with . my parents are sooo lucky to experience such FANTASTIC MUSIC!!!.
plus the Sylvers sisters were part of the group unlike the Jacksons they did some stuff together on their show and TV specials with the sisters but the sisters were not apart of the group and none of the Jackson sisters can't touch the Sylversr sister as far as singing and vocals go maybe Janet but the Sylvers harmonies are impeccable
Great singers! They sure didn't need any fire-crackers, dry-ice smoke, not even one single gimmick. Also, they respected their audience and actually dressed with so much class. Love them! So heart-warming to see they got out of that snake-pit. This generation today has gone mad! They can't take the heat so they turn to drugs.
Great looking family, especially the girls, Angie, Pat, and I had never heard Charmaine speak before this video, sexy voice, this talented Klan had it going on, R.I.P. Edmund and Momma Shirley...
@@lorraineburgess4802 Sure, I didn't forget her, I was just mentioning the sisters in this particular video. Olympia is the oldest of the four sisters...
The Jackson 5 and The Sylvers my favorite two family groups I love them both made no difference between one of the two those were wonderful times back in the day seeing those two groups
There were a lot of family groups back then who were talented and I loved them all from the Sylvers, J5, Sister Sledge, Pointer Sisters, Osmonds etc. They all had some jams. Unfortunately through bad management the Sylvers didn't reach the status of the Jacksons but all 8 of them were still on point with their sound and their steps.
The Sylvers are still amazing to listen to...they were able to do a song like this but also things like 'Fools Paradise', 'The Roulette Wheel Of Love', 'Free Style', 'Come Back Lover Come Back' and 'Let My Love Shine In'. I could go on but I will just say they were too young to be so talented and diverse.
I am consciously see the Sylvers for first time and was baby when they singing in 1973. Since I was so I couldn't actually seeing or hearing them, but I do remember seeing the Jackson 5 in 1975 or 1976? Anyhow, the Sylvers we're awesome!
Nuh huh. The Sylvers harmonizations and chord progressions were much more complex and intricate. The fact that every single member of the Sylvers could hit those note groups in unison without a single member straying false or being slightly off key is still unheard of. J5 was carried by Michael's vocal ability. Any quality recording can attest to that if you listen closely. The brothers didn't sing as well as him. Only Janet came remotely close in her own way. So If we had to speak 1 VS group, I'd say yes, Michael was on par. I specifically said "groups" though. No group has ever come close to the Sylvers. Not even the J5 as a unit. Michael pulled the carriage.
Leon and Edmond would always be in the food court at the Fox Hills Mall writing music. Foster had his troubles in later years, he lived across the street from me when I lived off of Angeles Vista…
They did all of the Shows, this Show, American Bandstand and The Midnight Special. I'm not sure if they did any shows in the UK but if they did, it would probably be Top Of The Pops (UK) and TopPop (France). Their downfall was just as heartbreaking as The Jets.
Ninetine62 hit the nail on the head. The Sylvers, ( only 4 if them back then) were on Make Room For Daddy tv show when they were under 10yo. ... long before the younger Jacksons were born. The Sylver kids sang ( in harmony ) on the show. Rusty brought them home to meet Danny ( thomas).
I never thought "they sounded just like the Jacksons." They always had a sound all their own. It seems like, at this time, there was just room for two family groups: The Jacksons, and the Osmonds. Both families had hit albums, and hit TV shows.
If I were running the music industry back then I would've developed a friendly rivalry between Edmund and Michael. Edmund would've been on The Girl Is Mine and Say, Say, Say track, with the approval of McCartney.

@PrincezzKay KeNyEtTa, there is a interview online that Foster Sylvers did with an independent journalist and he said that he sat down and had a conversation with Dick Clark before he passed away and Mr. Clark told him the powers that be in the music industry sabotaged the Sylvers as a group so that the Jackson 5 wouldn't have them as competition and knock them out of their spot at Motown. There was enough room for both groups to be successful and have flourishing careers in the music industry. Music Industry bullshiggity..... REMEMBERING EDMUND SYLVERS
(JANUARY 25, 1957 - MARCH 11, 2004)
[01/25/2024]
What a voice from the 70s.
Edmund died waayy before 2024
I bought the 45 of this song when it came out and I was in high school. i had their photos on my wall that I clipped from Right On magazine. Fun days. Great memories.
The days when there was real talent..
There's still talent going strong, but clone-like production, Auto-Tune and other turd polishing really hurts music from a fan's perspective.
Wish I could go back to these times and stay.. Life was so much easier then, and fun
44 years now, this jams been kicking ass.
Doctor Lock those were the days sir yo are absolutely correct there're still kicking ass.
Oh yeah. Love it. And damit, I just burnt all my old stuff, white flares included. Love the disco era. Greetings from Australia mate.

They should have been on Atlantic
@@lyriccole9230I agree with you….they would have been promoted there and Philadelphia.
@alexforest1 If you weren't a rock artist or working with Nile and 'Nard, you weren't getting any promotion on Atlantic.
