The way Cornell uses his voice, little nuances. Also, they sound very very similar.
I posted most of this on the interview video with David on Judgement Day, so I'm just going to copy and paste here what I said
there:
Obviously I was a Whitesnake fan before Soundgarden came around, so I knew David's voice well -the way he used it / the way it sounded. When I got into Soundgarden in the early 90's, Cornell's voice sounded extremely familiar, but I could never put my finger on it. As the years went by and I expanded my music range, Whitesnake fell off my radar for a while. Soundgarden was always in the mix somewhere, though. When Superunknown came around, I got that "where the hell have I heard Cornell's voice before?!" feeling again. Couple of years later I came across some Whitesnake again...and when I heard "Judgement Day", the penny dropped: Chris Cornell sounded *just* like David Coverdale.
With that, I meant that if you weren't very familiar with either band's music and you took Coverdale and made him sing some Soundgarden tracks, you wouldn't really notice -if at all. You could quite easily ask DC, to sing a few Soundgarden tracks, mix those tracks into the Soundgarden record (with Chris' vocals on other tracks inbetween) and most people wouldn't notice. Like *that* kind of "similar" 🙂
And thus: David Coverdale was/is the original Chris Cornell.
I hope it makes a little more sense now 🙂

It's my favorite Whitesnake song, but it drives me crazy how at @3:11, Dave sings "LIGHTLING STRIKES" , instead of Lightning Strikes.
It's just a slip of the tongue.
He adds a syllable, saying lighten-ing strikes. Not lightling.
L and N are both articulated by tongue tip to hard palate. A slight move from N (Ning) can create the L lingual curvature as tongue recedes to accommodate the /i/ vowel in the final syllable /-ING/. Especially when actively moving about the stage rather aerobically!!

Judgment Day was nothing nice at all. They played no games with this song. Sure it sounds a little bit like Kashmir but what better way 2 compliment the gr8test rock band n the world. The Mighty Zeppelin (aka) the hammer of the Gods.
