From Fiona Apple's mouth herself, during an interview: "With “Paper Bag,” I was in my father’s car - we were driving to the grocery store. and this is an idea of how long it takes me to deal with writing a song - this was, during the first album and i was miserable. (very cute laugh) and it was a saturday and me and my dad were driving to the grocery store - i was sitting, sulking...and I looked up into the sky and I saw this white dove! And I thought - I used to have terrible problem with uh, everything was a symbol to me...everything I saw meant life or death! And I look up in the sky sulking and I see this white dove, and think "OH! i--okay, Everythings going to be okay! White dove!" and I swung into this great high! and.... the dove started falling of course and...and it was a plastic bag! Just Trrraaaasssh...And so of course I just -dropped- again...and that stuck into my head and later on I was like - "Oh, the rule of my life! It always looks like its going to be great but its just a damned plastic bag..." and...you know, I made it a paper bag because paper sounds better (;P she giggles)"
No other woman brings chills like Fiona does when she sings. Often times, singers and lyricists who pour their souls out in such a raw manner do not produce songs like this. I agree, criminally underrated.
I love her so much she is so honest in her work and lyrics and the way she sings them; is truly commendable. The way she is, her weaknesses are her strengths and she shines, even when people think she is weak it is not true. She inspires me.
I have loved Fiona since I first heard Shadow Boxer back in the day when music was still good. I was 11 years old. She was my therapy for many years after that :)
She has the best voice I've ever heard........SHE IS AMAZING SO TALENTED AND HER VOICE IS SO STRONG AND UNIQUE....I would Love to see her perform live in a concert...
Very subtle but she always plays (or if someone else is on piano, has someone else play) a starting note in the key of the song to know what key to sing in when they come in.
An amazing talent . A true. Gifted artist. It’s a hard but true road to follow to share your gift and be real to yourself. Personally I’m impressed with her talent and wisdom 👍👍👍👏👏👏❤️😎
I love Fiona! She may have her videos and exploits but I truly love her music. I don't often gravitate toward female artrtists but she is an exception. To be able to combine musical complexity, melodic pleasure, powerful lyrics, and tie it all up with a versitile voice and performing talent, what is not to love? If she stays at her current level of fame it will be a loss for the world of music but I will reap the benefits, knowing that I am seeing a world talent at local seating.
I've seen Fiona three times with my GF. Let's see, I got her into Fiona about 5 years ago. Whoever ever it was in the comments that mentioned it.. yes, it is awesome to that you can see a world class talent at shows that are so accessible and be right up front, easily, if you want. Great shows too by the way..
It was through Bridesmaids that I discovered this song. Now, I can't get it out of my head. I pity myself for such a late appreciation of Fiona Apple's genius.
I found out just now that this isn't a modern song. I'm shook. I've been obsessed with this song for months and the whole time I thought she was a new undiscovered singer just breaking into the "Industry"... I feel like my mind has just been blown. I once saw a meme of someone recommending Tame Impala as a niche indie band and I laughed... I guess I'm the real joke cause how in the world did I not look up Fiona Apple before today? Anyway, if you ever see this Fiona, your music is saved me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Actually Fiona Apple did actually have an eating siorde, however, I don't think that's what this song is about. It's about keeping yourself away from something that can potentially hurt you which in the song's case in love.
No i totally get how you could see it meant that if you werent really listening to the song very well.. and you havent heard her explain what it meant. When she says "hunger hurts, and i want him him so bad it kills" she means shes hungry for "him" as in a boy. I meen the rest of the lyrics back the meaning up completely. She only mentions hunger in the chorus. And then "starving works when it costs too much to love" as in ridding yourself of him is okay when it costs you too much pain to love.
Wow, I can't see how this song is about eating disorders. I understand the 'hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love' line as meaning that even though it hurts to stay away from the person you love, it's an effective method when you know that that love is hopeless'...it's not meant to be interpreted literally, 'hunger' here is a metaphor for being away from the person you want.
I feel so bad that I got to grow up with real music and the kids of today get Taylor Swift. The hardest part is her fans think she has depth. Taylor is the baby bath you put inside the bathtub for newborns. Even that shallow water is too deep for Taylor. There are so many examples of America dying but the juxtaposition between Fiona and Taylor sums up the dumbing down and demise of America. It’s heartbreaking.
Just left this situation.... if you feel relatable to this song - run away lol. I even referenced the hunger analogy and he didn't get it. just as the song says, lol.
Bro she is insultingly underrated, dear God. What a genius.
RIGHT
Agreed
Such a voice 😍
I know. And please don't call me "bro."😋
Her biggest mess up that i think helped burry her was her mtv acceptance speech. I remember thinking it was great but most people did not
Every time I listen to Fiona after a period of not hearing any of her songs--I'm reminded I can feel these emotions again.

Source: Fiona Apple - iTunes originals
plastic bag would be iconic tho, look at katy perry "did you ever frel like a plastic bag" verse
_He said "It's all in your head" and I said "So's everything", but he didn't get it_
The way she squeezes in those last syllables kills me every time
Fiona is a musical genius.
I came to the comments to say the same!
What?
GENIUS is always a strong and overused word...but at least it's used correctly in terms of Fiona!
I always liked her much better than Amy Winehouse
Sadly I'm living this song.
Be strong! you're gonna go through this!
Trang Vuong Same i feel you!
I 💙feel u Trang!
Sister, we all are!
We are here for you
Fiona Apple has never produced one. single. mediocre song...Everything she has ever released is beautiful, creative, and above her peers.
This entire album was amazing... One of the few albums out there that is perfect from beginning to end.
I was fortunate enough to see her live in Durham NC about 8 years ago. She's just an incredible artist and performer.
No other woman brings chills like Fiona does when she sings. Often times, singers and lyricists who pour their souls out in such a raw manner do not produce songs like this. I agree, criminally underrated.
Comparable to Janis... That's the ultimate compliment
Raye also makes me feel this
"no other woman brings chills like Fiona" . Same good sir, same !
To be fair, men don't have the same effect as Fiona either. Don't bring her gender into it.
she is insane. one of the most beautifully written songs
She is not only beautiful. She is not only a good singer. She had a very hard life and now she is telling it to us. She is magnificent.
She and her lovely "sheep" vibrato.
this is a strikingly good live performance
"Cos I know that I'm a mess that he does not wanna clean..." This version is simply extraordinary!
her singing borders on astounding on this, especially for a live performance.
It's one of her best.....I LOVE how it's a sing-a-long in terms of melody, but she is so BITING with the lyrics
Exactly its almost deceptive if you're not paying attention. Brilliant song. It's probably my favorite of hers.
"these hands are too shaky to hold to hold" got too real for me
I love the repetition of the last three verses with different phrasing, simply genius
Amazing how she with so little 'performance' really makes you feel the song. She totally becomes the song without putting on a show, sorta.
She’s an awesome and ridiculously talented musician
hunger hurts but starving works when it costs too much to love
Looks like somebody had an eating disorder 8 years ago!
Her voice is so beautiful
the vibrato on her voice is such her trademark.. some of the most amazing lyrics i ever read in my life...
+A. Edwards I first heard her when I was 17 or 18. Immideately fell in love with voice and lyrics. True genius all around. Fiona is wonderful.
Ha ... 🎵yes when music was still actual music!
My top ten best vocalists.
Her voice feels like a drizzly but sunny afternoon.
I have listened to this song hundreds of times and I never tire of it.
Such a great song. The trumpet makes it so much more melancholic.
I love ❤️ Fiona she makes my heart burst - she has more talent in her finger than any singers out today .
She is probably the greatest lyricist ever. I love her music so much. Thanks for the video.
She has the best voice I've ever heard........SHE IS AMAZING SO TALENTED AND HER VOICE IS SO STRONG AND UNIQUE....I would Love to see her perform live in a concert...
She puts a lot of herself into her songs. I love her voice. Thanks for posting this.
Very subtle but she always plays (or if someone else is on piano, has someone else play) a starting note in the key of the song to know what key to sing in when they come in.
She actually looks for the cue lol. I've seen other artists do it. Glenn Danzig on songs like Last Caress when performed live.
If you are listening to this, you have a great taste in music and a respect for culture.
This is a song and a half...She gets deep - goes low. this means alot to her. she feels it. I dig it. Play it over and over... Happy Birthday Daddy !!
Beautiful performance by a beautiful and talented singer.
Her vibrato is cool but for me it's that husky, heavy undertone she has when she sings the low notes. Either way, she has a great voice.
Her Music is Something, But it's WHAT She Says/ Sings That Matters Most To Me, Because Honesty In Emotion is Sincere....Very RARE
Great line "He said it's all in your head, so is everything, but he didn't get it" GENIUS🙋🌼✌
her soul is beautiful...seriously theres more to life than the way people look.
i hope she never stops making music.
Her vocals are so hard to imitate.
one of the best singer/songwriters ever.
She's a class act, listen to that range and timing. Thanks for the posting.
With out a doubt the best singer/ songwriter of the last 30 years! Pure genius!!!!
I'm so glad she walked away and choose a better life. She's too precious to lose like just another stereotype tortured musician.
An amazing talent . A true. Gifted artist. It’s a hard but true road to follow to share your gift and be real to yourself. Personally I’m impressed with her talent and wisdom 👍👍👍👏👏👏❤️😎

she's perfect
I am speechless when it comes to her talent.
Beautiful. I feel like saying a million thngs about this performance. But, just beautiful.
She was so real for this Ngl😮💨😫😼 😭✌💔💔💔
Lovely lovely lovely song! Wonderful performance.
Lyrics kill me every time , I love and understand her.

Gee Whiz I could not be any more satisfied when listening to this explosion of words and it was a great adventure for me.
one of my all-time favourites...

Always a great pleasure to hear Fiona 😎🇺🇸🇫🇷 j’adore 😉
Iconic
she is flawless live! and she looks just as good today as she did a decade ago
It was through Bridesmaids that I discovered this song. Now, I can't get it out of my head. I pity myself for such a late appreciation of Fiona Apple's genius.
At Least you found her!
she should do a tour in eu. i want to see her live in germany.

Once in life time performer.
VERY HIGH QUALITY RENDITION. LOVE THIS LADY

Anyway, if you ever see this Fiona, your music is saved me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
The point is right there, "when it costs too much to love"~
Yes thank you. This is not about any disorder except maybe loving someone that is unwilling or incapable of loving you back
Wonderful, can not get enough of Fiona...
Awesome video-and I seriously love the interactive transcript! Your my hero, thank you for the upload!
Just sooo good....
Actually Fiona Apple did actually have an eating siorde, however, I don't think that's what this song is about. It's about keeping yourself away from something that can potentially hurt you which in the song's case in love.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DADDY. L.Y.L. ...babydoll s!
Still one of my favorites too!
She's always so wonderful live.
Have to listen this song everyday, love Fiona so so much :D
J'aime profondément cette artiste!

Just wow.
just discovered Fiona... great song ♥
OMG this is brilliant !
I feel so bad that I got to grow up with real music and the kids of today get Taylor Swift. The hardest part is her fans think she has depth. There are so many examples of America dying but the juxtaposition between Fiona and Taylor sums up the dumbing down and demise of America. It’s heartbreaking.
This song is a 10 and a half!
What a voice! Love it.
I use to be a heavy metal fan but this song is just...amazing!
Beautiful Fiona!!! I love you 💖😙
I LOVE FIONA!! I WISH SHE'D COME OUT WITH A NEW ALBUM!!! :)
she is so amazing!
totally agree; her lyrics are true poetry.
Such beautiful low tones
More I hear it, the more I get it. Love her.
Her best song.
What a great voice!!!! and she's beautifull too!!!
...when it costs too much to love...
Mmm mmm ❤
Do not fold your hand, Fiona. You are amazing…
Thanks for putting lyrics
Waiting for the day I see her live...
Just left this situation....
