In all honesty, during the opening carnage it's the plebs who are doing most of the work. Siegward's Storm Ruler doesn't make enough impact on that many targets at a time, while Yhorm can't find his way through the scrum to reach anything to hit until it gets thinned out a lot. It seems to be mostly the casters who are thinning out the horde.
I don't think Siegward even does anything to the normal giants. The stormruler ability isn't meant for anything other than Yhorm. Siegward's main job is to survive the intial skirmish and stagger Yhorm once he gets through the hitboxes of all the other giants. The NPCs are the DPS, but enough of them have to survive to the last struggle otherwise Yhorm trounces them easily. The giants just need to thin the herd enough for Yhorm to pick up the win. Yhorm is the cleanup crew. If he and the other giants hasn't managed to kill enough by the last fight, and Siegward still lives, giants lose. It's a really cool fight, despite the wonkiness of the giants

Watch the NPCs below the smack - the giant is hitting the air but is doing damage to the npc. Cuculous got smoked by a giant hitting the air twice in a row. Gets hit, out of heals, giant hits the air again above her and you see her get smashed into the ground, dead.
I honestly expected my boy Havel to do better. I guess the lack of estus really comes back to bite him in longer battles. Then again, maybe it was him that was keeping Yhorm busy in the back. Speaking of Yhorm, he's showing us why he wasn't part of the vanguard, he WAS the vanguard.
This may be pretty out of character for Yhorm but I really like the idea that he only fought for humans because winning battles with his fellow giants was way too easy

It seems far more likely that he was a human, and that his skull is the skull that was made into the goblet that takes us to his weird little pocket dimension, where he's represented more in line with the strength of his soul and not his actual body. Nothing ever actually calls him a giant, and it says he took his armbands off the arms of dead clerics, so unless we assume he also had giant clerics, it seems more likely that he was human.
@@dr.veronica6155 Wolnir's heritage is mainly up to interpretation. Connections can be made between him and Yhorm when regarding that Wolnir was a "conqueror" which could also fit into Yhorm's lore. We know that Wolnir succumbed to the abyss which is a common theme in dark souls, transformation of corruption seems quite inconsistent throughout the series however. When knight Artorias fell, he remained the same size, so too did Vendrick and the Abyss Watchers. But then there are also cases like Gael, whom clearly grew exponentially. (Although far less than Wolnir) In the end, everything you said is true. There's no official connection between Wolnir and the giants

I remember seeing Yhorm for the first time and saying "He's enormous how are we going to fight that?". Safe to say I was disappointed when even the big giants in the Cathedral and Irithyll Dungeon were like 3-5x his size. But he still rocks in these battles and I'll always root for him.
Kind of sad he got dogged like that, pretty small, and a gimmick boss, really only serves for siegward questline, he looks so cool at the starting cinematic as well, just about every other lord of cinder is better than him

I have a theory, Yhorm is called a giant but is significantly smaller than the other giants. On top of that, he resembles a human more than anything else. I think they just call him a giant simply because he is really tall for a human, and not because he is one. Also 5:24 is the most poetic frame I have ever seen.
Isn't he taller than the most giants? My theory is that there's probably just different breeds/variants of giants. Look at how different ds2 giants are for example

@@joshuakim5240 I was confused about what was killing them until I realized they were killing each other. At first I thought 1 or 2 npcs had snuck into the crowd and were being absolute chads. One giant even managed to get on top of some npcs and I think it actually just died to fall damage.

This is certainly the most epic one of these videos that's ever been made- the mightiest legion of heroes ever assembled, against the most unstoppable horde imaginable. You can barely follow any of it until it inevitably comes down to Siegward vs Yhorm and the last few ancilliaries on either side, but it's still glorious chaos. Just a shame the really big ones are so janky.
I like that the NPCs strategy to beat Yhorm is just: "Alright everyone, divert his attention and protect the onion boy at all cost"
