- On this episode we feature Kevin's 1972 Plymouth Satellite "Electrollite" that is tesla powered using Model S ludicrous powertrain. This one may be hard for some to swallow, a lot of people will argue that he ruined this beautiful classic American muscle car. We were skeptical at first, but after meeting Kevin and learning about his story we couldn't help but love the build. Kudos to Kevin for building this incredibly clean tire killer!

A build like this in 1 year & a half with no electrical engineering background? I'm impressed
ua-cam.com/channels/4YTETSknP9dy6d0mg0Nd-g.html🤣
Most engineers I have worked with could never achieve this 😆
@@aussiegruber86 which type of actual engineers have You EVER worked with ?
'Sanitation Engineers' and other Fake ones including 'Software Engineers' or perhaps an 'old' locomotive train engineer-driver ?
This work is a simple task and accomplishment for any actual engineer.
WARNING ["Will Robinson"]: FALSEHOOD ALERT 🙄😲😧😖🤥‼
Am actually an engineer with extensive mechanical, mechanic, technical, electrical, electronics, physics, knowledge, experience, expertise.
My MATH 142H, multi-variable calculus professor built a scale steam locomotive, train and track on his property, large enough to ride on sitting and on/in the scaled cars.
Proven, You are falsely portraying actual engineers. 🤥‼
@Rookie To Pro Buildz;
If You search on this platform and in general, there are numerous EV swap builds and better EV platforms than Tesla.
[See REE - individual motors per wheel - four current platforms - also cooperation with Toyota]
This "Electrollite" - 1968 Satellite EV swap, is clearly a well developed, built, done, with most of the details worked out.
However, it clearly vehicle lacks several proper details which resulted in the first 'rear end', differential issue, and still has issues with spinning the tires with full throttle.
A proper technician-mechanic and especially engineer would know use proper assessment, evaluation, analysis, design thus a complete plan and design prior to beginning the build task.
There are other EV swap-builds which achieve much better results= than what this vehicle has, though it clearly achieves the 'daily driver' with 'fun' and enjoyment type results.
My choice, as an actual engineer would be much different than this. Kevin basically used a Tesla chassis, placing the Satellite body with the customized interior, etc. Clearly he doesn't know enough how to arrange proper EV controls and seems to have had some assistance, which is from a non-engineer also, though most basically works - minus the many Tesla driving controls, etc.
There are far better option than using a Tesla design chassis, electric motors, system, especially their heavy weight batteries, and better performing, charging batteries too. Tesla didn't design, build, manufacture these components either, rather they assemble everything and have in-house design engineers and S/W development.
Sincerely
Conversions are actually getting somewhat easy, you can buy off the shelf parts to handle a lot of the really complicated electrical engineering and computation stuff.
Most of the work is getting your wiring right, and fabricating enclosures for the batteries and mounting for the motor
@@Ryukachoo Have actually accomplished a EV motor swap, installation with a properly functioning computer control ?
My expertise in both mechanical, electrical, mechanics, teccncians, design engineer lead me to figure You are clearly ignorant.
A LS/LT, Coyote, Ford, Mopar, Honda, Toyota, etc. swap using any ECU-PCM, is not even close to as easy as You are describing.
An expert within proper tuning for combustion engines is required.
If You choose an older LS, SBE, BBE, etc. without any ECU-PCM, then if You know how to tune an engine, carburetor, ignition properly. it can be relatively easy. - as those did 40-50 years ago
Else You are talking/writing 'Bullocks" 💩 and NONSENSE 🥴!!

The 55/45 weight distribution went under appreciated. That's incredible.
I was thinking the same thing, when saw the battery pack in the engine bay, I thought it must handle poorly. While watching all of it I realized this guy is not a hold my beer gearhead. He has built a work of art.
what would the original balance have been? presumably the engine he took out must have weighed more than those batteries, I would guess..
@ceanomaly About 54.0% Front / 46% Rear. (Source: MOPAR parts board 1970 Road Runner weight).
Remove cast-iron V-8 block from front. I think the old Tesla Model S P100D rear drive unit assembly with two motors and reduction gearbox is hefty. The car's total weight is barely more than stock. Impressive build.
Chrysler should be taking notes now that they're move to all electrification. This guy is crazy skilled!
I fell in love the minute he said ludicrous plaid drive train with none of the safety features which is the essence of muscle car
This guy gets it :)
Pity that car isn't street legal.
@@bdhale34 in the USA it probably is road legal the Vin number is for the now antique car depending on the state it probably just needs a windshield safety inspection sticker that's just brakes and lights
It's a P100D. Roughly 700hp. IF it was dual motored, which I gather this is not (rear motor only), so closer to 500bhp.
The P100D had two motors, one front, one rear.
The Plaid drive puts out 1000+hp on three motors (one for each rear wheel and one up front).

Two awesome builds. I’m a gasoline engine guy through and through. But this swapped satellite just makes me smile. It looks like so much fun to drive. This is the definition of a modern restomod. But the level at which these are both Billy are insane for small home garage builds. This man embodies what a car guy truly is. Props for two insanely beautiful builds.

Not if he puts a gross EV motor in it. That ruined the car honestly. You don't get that sick sound and aggression that completes the car. I will NEVER own an electric car.
ruined the whole car for clout
I think one reason is that he did it "hot rod" style. It's not a body kit on a Tesla it's a swap.

Can you imagine how much more crazy that will be with a Plaid drivetrain!
That is like the coolest conversion I've ever seen I'm all in an electric cars!
What a humble and intelligent guy. Props on both builds!
Nearly speechless. It's probably the best looking fuselage Satellite on top of it all. Love the Dart too.
What a couple of sweet builds. I can’t imagine how much work and learning that had to have been to accomplish the build.
And money...
Engineers don't learn, they tinker.
@@lescobrandon8045 Well tinkering is just learning to an obsessive level. I started on BEVs obsession in 2004 due to College friend working on a Inverter Controller project. 18 years later I'm still fixated on this subject.

Even if he had a couple buddies helping him out a sub 2 year build that’s definitely something to be real proud of
I think if EVs went more into a 'conversion' philosophy, EVs would be a lot more appealing to a lot of gearheads. Something about old cars being converted to an EV makes it cool, kinda giving it that futuristic retro feeling.
Thats about my plan, already got a sportbike frame stripped down for when I have the money to start.

Every time I see this car featured, I pick up details I didn't see before and to pull this off in 1-1/2 years while having a day job is insane. That Dart is amazing too, the power to weight ratio should put it deeeep into the 10's, maybe 9's and for that B-Body to walk it is shocking. Great job on both cars Kevin and a well done video, love the "speachless" moment, no BS there.

The new Gear Head! This it! I see huge amounts of swaps....Old cars, new technology. A marriage made in car heaven!
swaps will give new and functional life to old cars
Tundra 5.7 in my '68 GTO. Only in my mind
The classics from the 50s, 60s, and 70s just look so distinctive. They have a beauty that new cars just lack. I know we prioritize aerodynamics nowadays, leading to very similar looks, but it makes them so much less eye catching.
@@JKHtheIII it’s the long nose and rear end of the older cars that makes them distinct. The new Dodge Challengers are a testament to that, even though it’s modern it still has that “vintage” look because if it’s length. Almost all new cars have short noses and they’re compact,
I love the old dodges. I love classic muscle cars. This is a pretty cool swap. If the old dodges weren't so expensive id love one
I've seen this car in person. Amazing build quality.
This guy here being an actual *gear head* when many love to hate on him for trying something new and interesting, regardless of how tastefully executed. I am thankful for projects like these. Delusional
Can't be a gearhead when your "engine" has no gears.
I can respect the work it took to make this build happen. A lot of time, thought, and effort went in to this to even make it work. So I'm not hating on the build, but the end product is uninspiring. Sure, it'll move. But the way it just moves away without a sound...it's just not the same. It's not the same as the experience created when going fast by means of a breathing, fire-powered piece of engineering. When you think about what a gas engine goes through, the forces experienced, the strength and precision required to keep it all together...it's a work of art, with so much more inspiration. Much more soul, mechanical feel, excitement.
Not too soon I hope. I love being able to walk away from gas cars in my EV. I had a young fellow in a Newer Dodge Charger wanting to race at a red light a few months back. Normally I just ignore them... unless I'm in my Olds 442, (a more fair race, but I drive it sparingly because of gas prices) but this kid was being a bit obnoxious, so as soon as the light turned green, and I heard his engine revving, I gently pushed down my pedal and saw him in the rearview, making a lot of noise, but not getting any closer. He gave me the finger when I hit the brakes and let him fly by. I know buddy... the fear-based "Get a horse" mentality that has persisted since automobiles where first invented is deeply ingrained in you. Gas vehicles will be around for quite a while, although the ratio of alternate power to petrol will be in a constant state of shifting away from them. The nice thing about that, is that eventually the gas cars on the road will be the fringe rebels, and seeing a fully restored MOPAR product will be even more impressive than it is today.
@@CtDDtC1919 Certainly hope you're correct but I don't think Big Brother will allow us to buy gasoline in another 10 years. I hope I'm wrong, I still want my 4-5 collector cars to be worth big bucks for another 10-15 years. After that? Who gives a shit, let them be scrap metal and a select few occupy museums. Just let me sell them off before then. IMO

To me, you've "set the standard" for E-Hot Rodding at this time. This is an excellent example of electric motor swap with all the details.
The name of your car "Electrolite" is so cool too.
Perhaps you might consider having a vinyl stencil made similar to the old school drag cars that had their vehicle name painted on the quarter panels, or have it painted.
Excellent project and your skills with regards to detail is exceptional.
Fantastic job! As with all "hot rodders' - are you thinking about a new E-project?!
Very, very cool. But he is not just your regular gear head, and I find it very hard to believe that was built in a home garage around kid bikes…. it takes some specialized knowledge, training, and tools to build something that clean, that complete - in a year and a half. That Satellite looks and runs like a professional build.
There's more to the story. Where do you get a tesla donor car? He must have a lot of money.

When I came across this video, I decided to watch it with the intention of leaving some hate in the comment section.. but I can't! Seems like a very well thought out and executed build. I had questions about how he was going to make that car stop, with all the added weight and speed, until I saw the gigantic brake rotors and calipers. Also, the cantilever rear suspension blew my mind! Well done. I think a nice finishing touch, would be a black strobe stripe across the roof and down the sides, like my 1972 roadrunner had.
Sounds like maybe you could use one you have a lot of fun peace
The funny part about the brakes is everyone says the Tesla brakes are terrible. Because they don't realize how much mass is moving that fast...

And while nothing will truly replace the cool that is the rumble of a small block Chevy, if the day ever came that gasoline became too cost prohibitive or just flat out impossible to get, I would do this to our 67 Camaro in a heartbeat. EV manufacters need to start creating and sending crate kits to allow people to convert their own vehicles into creations like this if they want to and if they don't want a bubble EV.
(if you think about it, it would allow mechanics to be able to continue working with parts that they would know and some part manufacturers can still sell the same parts without having to modify them for EV.)
Will never happen because they want everyone to drive the exact same thing. Where all cars look exactly the same there's a name for it but he wants control and I'll never buy a ev anyways because I'm against it
@@tylerbuilt_chevy_tough5163 Given fuel costs are rising stupidly quickly and high, an EV option would be cost efficient for around town/cities. Still, I lean to hybrid for now due to my country's power grid can't cope yet, also the reason I said that idea was it stops the need to dump old cars and instead reuse them and give them life to them again and mechanics/garages have job security. but before I get someone whining about EVs when farming, I also support biofuel for farming, race/drift sport, industrial workplaces and rural firefighters only.
Semi-trucks could go EV but stick to the same original body instead and have the trailer have solar panels that charge the truck up so they don't' need to wait for a turn to fuel up when you have 15 other trucks wanting to fuel up and don't need to spend a lot on fuel and that also would lower food cost due to fuel no longer affecting transportation cost. I’m sure Tesla, at least at the factory level has a screen that will show you the health of each of the cells. But I also know that something Tesla doesn’t want anybody to know because they make far too much replacing batteries.
Tesla would have to test every cell individualy, what they can test is if the modules holding the cells are acting unusual which can indicate a bad cell. Tesla is not interested on making money in repair, they tell their own repair centers to only charge the customer for the true cost of parts and labor. They rather you turn in your old Tesla for a new one and they will recycle the old one at a profit.
Tesla should not be making that much of off replacing battery’s since these cars are so new, really says something about their build quality 😴

IDK how much time you have left on the planet, but this is going to be the future of classic retro mods. As time passes, and Electric becomes mainstream, actual gas classic car replacement parts will become more expensive and more novelty than mass produced.
