- Going Long Range is a 12 day fishing trip on the Excel Sportfishing Vessel out of San Diego, California. Fins-N-Feathers hosts this annual Thanksgiving trip to chase after Yellowtail, Dorado, Grouper, Monster Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo. 24 Anglers try their luck over 12 days to fill their limits and bring home some trophy fish. Fishing out here is completely different there is no long-range boats. They have what they call six-pack charters. Just day trips. When I come back to California on vacation, I'm definitely going to go on a trip. I miss that boat and everyone on it. But tell the crew I said hi. God bless you all. Wow! I've watched DVD's of fishing trips from the excel. Title was Big Boat, Big Fish and Deep Color if my memory serves me right. Seems the captain has changed hands over over the years, recall seeing another person. What a way to fish... One for the bucket list and only a distant dream for many. Thank you for the video!
Yes Ive watched those video’s from years past. Those were made by Inside Sportfishing with Michael Folkes. Those were made when Bill Poole owned the boat. He was the original owner. Our captain for this trip isnt the owner

This trip on the Excel for 12 days, fins and feather. I have never seen a trip like this I would love to be on a trip for 12 days. This was a trip of the lifetime just watching it I got so excited I need to definitely look into going on a trip like this all I can say is wow🔥🔥🔥👌👌😁🎣🙏🏿😎🎶🍺

Everyone is given a different number. Then a numbered tag is put on the fish when it comes over the rail.

I can’t believe my eyes… out of all the thousands of dollars of some of the finest tackle imaginable, I didn’t see one single rod butt belt. Those guys are all going home with black and blue stomachs. It’s one of the cheapest accessories you can buy and it saves you from horrible bruises…
Also I have to comment on the deck hands, I never saw one of them miss on the gaff. They were spot on every time. The heavy set guy was an absolute artist.
Do you release fish for the first 4 or 5 days, they would hardly be fresh still after 12 days?
Some fish get released but the boat has RSW, refrigerated saltwater system so they are held at close to frozen. Fish tastes fresh and sushi grade.

Do the deckhands get tipped out better for clean gaff shots or is the mentality on that kind of boat "get it in the boat however possible/however bad the gaff shot? Honestly asking, never been that far above a fish to know the difficulty of gaffing vs being an armlength
Tipping is discretionary based on each person’s experience.
In my experience the deckhands on sportboats are always trying for good headshots on the first stick and take pride in gaffing the fish cleanly. No one wants their fillets messed up with gaff holes through them but…
THE most important thing is to just stick the fish WHEREVER they can. Losing the fish at gaff is the worst and by the time the fish is close enough to the boat, all the worst scenarios can play out. Tired angler, line is worn down, pushing the drag up too much, rubbing on the boat, getting in the prop, snagging the rudder, the hook pulling out, one last unexpected run by the fish and breaking the line, tangles… ooh the tangles, etc. Also remember that the boat is riding 8-12 feet above the water line at the stern to begin with, plus using a 15’+ bamboo gaff reaching down…
No one is ever going to complain about some of the meat getting ruined when you land your fish. But there are lots of “fish stories” about the ones that got away because they busted off at gaff length or worse the fish got away because of a missed/bad gaff shot. Absolute heartbreak. Bad for the crew and angler. IMO the crew wants you to land your fish just as much as you do.
In my experience the best scenario is a clean headshot with the first stick and then for fish (if we should be so lucky) that need two or more gaffs to pull over the rail, the second one is placed in the tail, avoiding the prime eating tuna belly and loin areas. But with fish THAT big like you see in the video, they get two gaffs in it quickly so that one deckhand isn’t overpowered on the first stick. So, you get what you see in the video, gaffs in various places in the fish. But landed!

What's a trip like that cost
Depends on the boat and trip length, but ranges between 400-700 per day on trips that are 4 days or longer. Also add %15 tip to the crew and fish cleaning/processing coasts. Maybe like 8k total all in.

4000-5000.00. I have been on 2 10 ten trip. Depends on what boat you ride. But anywhere between 4-5000.00 for trip like that.

I understand the deckhands are busy on a head boat but I worked on one in south Florida when I was young and it you made that many bad gaffs your butt wouldn't be on the next trip tons of meat ruined by the hook!
