Sailing towards Brindisi from Constantinople, early May 1204. It wasn't supposed to happen this way. It was a crusade, for God's sake! Jerusalem was the goal, but it wasn't. The Venetians, thrice be damned, in exchange for funding for the campaign convinced us to make a detour. "After all, the Basileus promised to pay us what was due", they said. And we marched on to THE CITY, Pearl among Cities. A little more than a month and two major attacks delayed the siege. We no longer held out hope that the Basileus, cowardly scoundrel, would pay us. So the city paid. In gold and blood. He was nobody special. Just a third son of a minor nobleman in Burgundy. He would not receive any inheritance, nor was he destined for the clergy.. The promise of glory and redemption of the Crusade was simply irresistible. He dreamed of contemplate the Holy Land and liberating Jerusalem of the Muslim hand. To re-establish legitimate Christian authority over the Holy City. It was not to end like this: First Zara, a city sacked on behalf of the Venetians, and then Constantinople. The motto Deus Vult used for this. It would be laughable if it were not so tragic. Remembering the burning city, the soldier of the cross looked up at the evening sky and asked himself: -Still feel like a hero, Gisbourne? An attempt at a snippet inspired by the video. Indeed. Even though many of those who participated in the Fourth Crusade actually went to the Levant, the ones who defected to Constantinople did catastrophic damage, in every way.
In fact, it was largely because of this that the Crusades failed miserably in a general context, greed and pride.
