  • The property I bought several years ago has what appears to be a derelict well and commercial-sized irrigation system. I have zero experience with either, but would like to get it up and running as there are many acres to which I would like to get water. There are several places with what appear to be standpipes some with barbed fittings, some with threaded fittings and some have solenoid valves that apparently were run from a sprinkler timer. There is also evidence of a drip irrigation system that was once used but looks to be almost completely destroyed.
This is a multi-part video series that documents my attempt to learn how and if the system works, and if it does not work how I go about troubleshooting the issues. At this point there appears to be a lot of digging involved, therefore I'll be leaning heavily on the front end loader on my Kubota B2301 compact tractor.
In part 2 I installed a centrifugal irrigation pump (jet pump) to pull water from the well to attempt to pressurize the system and subsequently find out where the break (or breaks) are in the system and see if water will flow to all the remote stations. The pump and plumbing setup is temporary until I figure out how to get the entire system up and running, afterwards I will set it up more permanently including building a doghouse for it to protect it from the elements. After being able to get the pump to pump water continuously for about an hour a marsh did start to develop about 50 yards out into the field, thus indicating a break in a line. Digging ensued, but the exact position of the pipe eluded me well past dark.
