- This short video gives advice on how to make the transition from U.S. military service to federal or local law enforcement. In particular, topics discussed will include how to obtain and claim veterans preference and how to make the most of military service from the point of view of a person aspiring to a career in law enforcement.

I am currently an Army ROTC cadet and on scholarship. After the Army, I want to work for HSI or any other law enforcement agency. I was wondering what you think about doing Military Police if federal law enforcement is my goal.

I am going to start my ETS process in December 2022. I am a commissioned officer. Would you recommend applying to federal agencies around 1.5 years prior to your end date?
I would think that now would be a good time to begin if you are applying to the FBI or DEA. These agencies are notoriously slow in processing applications and there is no guarantee that they will continue to accept applications once the current vacancy closes. As to other agencies, such as BP or Park Police, they have a much more expedited process.
I really appreciate your videos. I'm in the middle of this transition from Enlisted to Local. But what is your take on Service Credit? I see its offered for Fed, State and Local jobs to allow those who served to buy back their time towards retirement/pensions.
Military service can be bought for retirement purposes. I would highly advise that you do so if you do transition to civilian service. Basically your military service salary is calculated on the average of high 3 and you would then send a check to the government to buy your years of service. It will not count toward covered time (you have to have 20 covered years either as a LEO, firefighter or ATC in order to retire). It will add in beyond your 20, so if you do 20 with a federal agency and 10 in the military, that will give you 30 years for pension purposes.

Sadly unless we go to war with Russia I don’t think I’m going to qualify for veterans preference because I wasn’t able to join when they were still doing deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan

I am currently a 19yr old enlisted soldier serving as an infantryman, and I ETS in 2023. I am planning to go to a community college, and then transfer to a university to get my bachelors, but I don't really know what major to study because a lot of people are telling me not to study criminal justice. Another question, how can I find a recruiter that recruits veterans that want to be a police officer? For an example, I want to join the california highway patrol.
Wait why are people telling you to not study criminal justice? Just asking because I’m still in high school and trying to make a plan.
@@Ilovesharks17 don’t study criminal justice, it’s not a degree you can use anywhere else. If being a cop doesn’t pan out for some reason you’re kind of screwed.

Have agencies changed the education requirements for applicants? When I applied years ago, a bachelor's wasn't a requirement for entry level positions. Education could have been substituted for investigative experience.
For Special Agent positions, it is practically impossible to be hired without at least a BA. For other federal agencies, education and experience can combine to qualify an applicant.
Can a former commissioned officer join ncis whether Air Force or Army.
Yes. NCIS is almost all civilians, so any qualified person can join so long as you have been separated from active duty.
Does the National Defense medal count for the #1 criteria for 5 point veterans preference
No. It has to be an expeditionary medal or campaign medal.
I can't get a badge when I join as of right now because there's no wars going on, although it does seem as if we're on the brink of one

Depends on your commissioning source. Service Academies are around 5 years minimum. ROTC/OCS: 3-4 years depending if the military gave you a scholarship or not.

Well, you got to put things into perspective, know that the author of this video was a Federal Leo, but the video does include local and state.
There are some local and state Leo’s making some pretty good money in basic pay alone.
My brother is Irving Texas PD, makes mid $70’s I believe. Now he has been there for a while but he is just a patrolman.
Never been promoted. Never sought a promotion.
I’m sure his pay has increased over time.
His wife is American Airlines, does pretty well for herself as well doing that.
Now my brother, as I used to do, also works extra jobs, like at schools, directing traffic for schools in the morning and or afternoon.
Some of those schools pay pretty big money per hour.
When I was doing it I worked an extra job at a private school for 2 hours a day, $50 an hour. Didn’t do it every day, but I was on the Panama schedule with work, so days I wasn’t on the clock when that school let out, I was there. They paid by check every two weeks. Little chunk of change in the long run and that wasn’t my only extra job.
You cannot work extra jobs while on the clock with your agency. A big no-no, I’m pretty sure that’s every agency from sea to shining sea.
Construction jobs on the roadways and highways all pretty much require hired police, those pay usually starting at $50 an hour, and that was 12 years back for me. Probably pay more now.
So when you factor in your work pay, extra job pay, if your spouse works, add all that up and you are doing pretty well.
Federal Law Enforcement Pay completely blows local law pay out of the water.
All former military that have an interest in law enforcement, should have an overall goal of going Federal Law Enforcement.
Doing local time first is fine and a good thing for actual Leo experience. Being former military is not going to automatically make you a great law enforcement officer, even if you were MP before hand.
Going local will give you an invaluable education on criminality, mental illness, and internal politics amongst local govt officials, your District Attorneys Office, your local Leo leadership and your local Leo co-workers. It will NOT be all Honky Dory.
Eventually going Federal for former military is a bonus because in the hiring process you will be awarded “veteran’s preference” over any regular civilian Joe Schmuckatelli. So you’ll be ahead of Joe in the hiring line.
Once hired, you can hook up with the rep or the finance assistant in your assigned office which will probably be a civilian in that seat, and start the process of being able to tack on your active duty years to your Federal Retirement Pension.
So if you do 10 military and 20 in Fed Leo, if you did the process correctly called “military buy back” you will retire with a pension based off 30 years of service.
The more years of service, the higher the pension will be.
I believe military buy back is 3% of your total active duty earnings. That could be a hefty amount but it doesn’t have to be paid all at once. It can be paid over time like a car payment.
Once paid for, be it in 5 years, 10 or 15, those active duty years will add to your Fed Leo years.
Four things you should google and educate yourself on are:
Federal Military Buy Back
GS scale pay grades
Federal Law Enforcement Availability Pay
&
Federal Locality pay
I believe the military is paid once a month. Feds and locals pay every two weeks.

Good option. I understand that the Army will allow certain people to enlist with a guarantee of CID assignment, so I recommend it.
How would 18 (Army special forces)series mos transfer over?
It would be looked on very favorably. I would recommend FBI military/veteran category or spec ops with any other agency.
