Nothing is more comfortable or faster than high tech 21st century bus or rail service. More reliable under varying circumstances and weather conditions. Less hazardous.
Number 2 was the only real, credible mode of transport of the bunch! The prospect of a 4 (tilting) wheel quadricycle with an efficient 4 stroke engine with good range is extremely appealing.
@CvilleGuy Yes, I know, and they are the limiting factor, but with a good, lightweight 4 stroke engine the thing would actually be viable as a means of transport.
@CvilleGuy The entire point of the video was to demonstrate devices to enhance personal mobility. Not wanting the limitations that current electric vehicles have - Range - I proposed the use of an efficient 4 stroke motor. That you cannot comprehend beyond a 20 mile range in no way detracts from the point that a compact, lightweight 4 stroke motor would hugely enhance the practicality of the type. It is only by thinking beyond such limited ranges that development actually occurs!
Personal transport like the 4-7 person family hauler are appealing. Fit it with a weather proof, insulated, hard body cover with locking doors or hatches and offer mounting points for other types of seating to convert it to a camper unit.
Weight kills. My project is taking a 750 cc motorcycle frame and a 6.5 or 14 HP predator engine starting with a belt drive and then possibly a clutch or variable clutch drive. Point being that even such a frame is incredibly light compared to a big inline 4 cyl. Not in a hurry to get places after crashing and having the ER almost kill me when all I have is heavy bruising
Interesting video. Sadly, most of these are not street legal in my state. They would either fall into the legal definition of "automobile" or "motorcycle", categories that come with certain requirements like fenders, illuminated license plate holders, turn signals, etc. etc. which these devices don't have. AFAIK, the same is true in pretty much all 50 states of the US. If it has four wheels, it's an automobile. If has fewer than 4 wheels but it goes faster than 30 mph, it's a motorcycle. That's how the laws are written. A few of these might be legal as motorcycles or mopeds, if they have turn signals, mirrors, fenders, illuminated license plate, head lamp, and brake light. But then you need a driver's license and possibly a motorcycle endorsement and a DOT helmet. And you have to register it, get a license plate, and have insurance on it. What we really need is a three-wheel pedal-electric-hybrid with a roof to keep the rain off your head, with a top speed (without pedaling) of 20 mph, and a 750W motor. That would classify it as a bicycle, so no registration or license required. I've seen a few, like the PEBL and the ELF, but those are kinda pricey. If you move up into the motorcycle category, I say go all out and make it highway speed capable, like the Arcimoto or the Elio. We need more options like those, IMHO. Keeping the rain off your head is an important design element or else nobody wants to ride it in the winter.
But ya, our laws need some serious updating in this area. Sadly, the more they update them the more the less accessible they make electric bikes and alternate vehicles to the roads and parks. so I guess we actually need new lawmakers that serve people instead of car companies.
@@suzieseabee Federal electric bicycle law supersedes any state or local law so any electric bike with two or three wheels that goes no faster than 20mph is legal in all 50 states.
The laws on bycycles are crazy, one says yes but, the next says no. Hard to figure out here. Federal laws say we have the right to travel using the convayence of the day but try and you will be arested.
