The important thing of Exchange Server 2003 was that -while Instant Messaging was put out in an external product as you said- the "Mobile Information Server 2001/2002" product along with Exchange ActiveSync, Outlook Mobile Access (basically a very basic WAP version for those old mobile phone browsers) etc. was included. So Exchange 2003 didn't bring them as newly developed features, but instead bundled the extra product (that was quite costly) for free now, which features was becoming to be much more important than Instant Messaging, so the swap was a good thing for 99% of all users.
