i'm a huge Gibson fan, but I think it's lame they offer so few options on production run Vs and Explorers. If they aren't going to give us cool finishes or trems, pickups, etc. they should let others fill that void.

If it gets to the "supreme" court, the case will not be decided on any merits. Rather, it will be decided by who pays the biggest bribe.

The Strat body shape, that ship has sailed. The Les Paul body shape, the cat's out of the box. I think Gibson is grasping at straws with the Flying V. That's all the analogies I can think of right now. AFA headstocks, apparently many brands come close w/o infringing. Summation: Free the V!

I have to side with Gibson on this one. They went through the creative process and cost in the late 50's creating the "V" and the humiliation when it flopped. They stayed with it all these years and now that the vintage ones are selling so high, Dean wants to cash in. If they want to use the design, pay a fee to Gibson or design their own guitars. Love the videos.

I had an epiphany korina v for awhile. I really liked it as I usually play in the classical position, it just didn't get used enough to justify keeping it. every time one pops up on marketplace, I give it a good hard look! I'm sure I'll have another v someday...

I had to get an acoustic V years ago. Playing seated isn't so bad if you have it mostly upright and the hollow of the vee is sitting on your thigh. Even though I've never seen Jack Black with an acoustic V, it always gives me Tenacious D vibes when I pick it up.

I think the body shape is so universal now its hard to argue who owns what anymore..we should know if it's a Gibson or dean by the headstock and I believe most people feel that way. Regardless and Dean flying V and a Gibson flying V are 2 different beasts. As long as the manufactures do not blatantly steal from another company's logo to profit. If it says chibson...I know it's not a Gibson. If it says Dean..then it's a Dean. I'm good with both for very different reasons. I'm going to buy what I want for my needs as a guitarist. Stop with the lawsuits unless the company is trying to say they are you and profiting from it.

Dean made their V's by taking apart the originals. when Gibson re-introduced them they didn't even have their own blueprints . When they moved to Nashville they took financial records but those that were told to move the files were told to literally burn everything else. Gibson literally had to get Dean to visit them and show them how to make their own guitar. Hey! You can't make this sh@t up!!!
I had a chat with a group of the guys involved in early prototypes and research at a NAMM in I believe was 83 or thereabouts. One guy grabbed and kept the 'Dailys' and kept them. These were hand written notes on company letterhead paper. It was about 4 or more inches thick. Full of research on woods, shapes, you name it. I borrowed it overnight. WOW!!! The research on the Explorer and V on if it would destroy the tone by it's large size was really revealing. The simple answer is no. But the reasons why changes everything.

In the craft business anything made of wood can be copied......if it is made from metal or has metal on it that was copied from another craftsman or company then you have a case...... where's the lawyers knowledge? they can make dean not be able to copy the metal pieces on the guitar, like that v shaped metal piece behind the bridge

I think the Strat body already set the legal standard. There's just too much copy cat in general in the Guitar industry IMHO for Gibson to arbitrarily be laying a line in the sand over the Flying V.
My issue is.. I guess you can't really own a rudimentary shape. I mean... Bread.. Everybody makes a loaf of bread that looks like a loaf of bread. Could bread makers decree.. The shape of a slice of bread is copyrighted?
The headstock is very different. And the vibe of the guitar is different. Dean.. is setting up a shredder, metal leaning instrument. Gibsons take on it.. IMHO is a blues machine. They're very different instruments. Just like the Silver Sky which is obviously a strat is it's own thing.

Congrats dean now make your slogan "How authentic?" esp could be "unbridled authenticity" fender would be "the Authentic-ist"
Martin would be "authentic before there was authentic" prs "Pretentiously authentic" Ibanez "authentic prestige" Schecter would be "Hella Authentic"
My new catch phrase is "Lay down a towel it's about to get authentic in here"

Just my opinion if you’re going to maintain copyright ownership you have to defend it within a reasonable timeframe to be considered seriously? Decades of Dean and others making same or very similar bodies. Why just Dean? Why decades into the infringement? Headstocks are definitely different and represent Dean. The V is just a letter of the alphabet afterall. That fell over after finding speed in an amplifier 😂

when I sneeze I'm reaching for what? A Kleenex... yes, once it was a true brand name, but today it's a generic term for a facial tissue. It's the same with the V shaped guitars. With all the things Gibson could choose to emphasize about their V ( the heritage, the originality of it, the quality, the bazillion famous players who use their V's ) it makes little sense to me why they are pursuing legalities.

Looking at the entire guitar, I don’t think any player is going to mistake a Dean V for a Gibson V. I don’t know anyone who sees a V and says “Hey, nice Gibson V” or “Hey, nice Dean V.” Everyone just says “nice V.” Where does this all stop? Does this mean that because I have a dad bod that no other guy can have a dad bod too? 😁 I am a firm believer that headstock shapes are proprietary and copying those is fraud but I give a lot of leeway with body shapes. Of course I’m not Gibson so have a different opinion from them.
