4 years ago I made a game on Scratch. Now I'm remaking that game in Godot and discussing some of the challenges I faced on the way. That and some funnies in today's indie devlog.

As it should be
you can play it with a older version of flash
You can play it on newgrounds with the newgrounds player

What you said about deadlines is so relatable. A lot of people (including me) set ridiculously unreleastic deadlines. I think the reason we end up in that situation is because most of us are setting a deadline to finish doing something that we don't 100% completely know about it. And we end up not accounting for the time it takes to learn the things we overlooked. So, if someone wants to dab in 3D animation to make a 5 minutes movie, they will give themselves probably a month to learn and finish making that animation. Which is completely unreleastic. How were you able to estimate it is going to take a month if you know nothing about 3D and are just starting out?
There is a quote I read somewhere but it summarizes most of us:
"We overestimate what we can achieve in a day, and underestimate what we can achieve in a year"
Wanted to let you know that I got this video on my recommendation, so the algorithm is working out for you, fellow game dev :)
I clicked to see the game and stayed for the amazing info on deadlines great video
Great video! I really appreciate that you really show the struggle of game dev, amazing video!
Congrats for your Gamejam win!
The fun thing about working in Godot is having to translate tutorials people made for Unity
And hoping they don’t bring up some feature that doesn’t have a Godot equivalent
I clicked to see some game dev but got an existential crisis instead.
This video is really well made! I think making more games like this, or trying out some Game Jams would be really cool.
Really great video man! Captured all the ups and downs of gamedev imo
Tygt😢t
From first second: Liked and Subscribed.
Nice video!
Nice work and you made some good points. I'll definitely use the setting time technique
3:18 was NOT expecting that. props to you in my opinion just this little bit about the 10 hour mark added a lot of suspense and "deepness" to the video
You deserve more than 385 subs, keep up the good work, also make a discord server i bet it'll be better
“Pop both kneecaps”
NEW SENTENCE DISCOVERED
Underrated
thank you for showing me that you can use godot in steam
Anytime
This should be more popular
Still look better than my duct tape coded game.
Duct tape is the best programming language.
Why the fuck is blender and godot in steam 😧 Anyways great progress and editing
Gotta track the hours
@@LazyAlarm ohh
Ok sorry dont take it personaly buut i thought u were going to do more ( I know how coding is consuming) buut honestly it look like u just shared your problems with us
That’s fair, I wanted to focus the topic on a very specific frustration that people can relate to, so I can see it being underwhelming if you’re just looking for game dev.
3:25 Y: THE LAST MAN SOUNDTRACK MY BELOVED
wow this is really good
Wow cool video
Should make a discord would be really fun
Man! That speech wave effect! Thats awesome!
Now do a live action remake.
Now that's an idea!
POV you watch the video to see someone making a game but instead got a life lesson about deadlines
Bait and switch
IDK i'm a kid doing this purely for my own will and passion so my experience is limited...
I don't(never) set a deadline. instead I write what I want to make and work on it as I want to. This probably isn't the most efficient way but I never get stuck in that weird state others seem to get stuck in. If a quality product is my goal it always takes longer then expected but if a mvp is what I'm after it usually takes way less time then I expect it to. (although I enjoy the programing and design 50 times more than I like art/ polish)
go ahead try it
I don't set deadlines if I know it's a project I'll continually have interest in, but often that's not the case. Sometimes I need a good deadline to get some actual progress done.
@@LazyAlarm That's kind of what i'm saying if it's something you actually want to work on you probably won't need many deadlines. If it's something "I" don't want to do but need to do it I just do something interesting while I half work. Then I finish it strong and reward myself for completing unwanted task. You may just want not start/ finish a project if you find yourself setting such aggressive deadlines
🔥🔥🔥
you deserve way more
lol the scratch thingy works
awesome video man!!
Great video
i Hope you succeed
Tell me why at 4:26 there's a guy in the background with a gun or weapon?
no
this is really epic
I've read when coming up with a timeline for gamedev. Take how long you you think it will take, then double that time. Then add another 50% to that time and you'll get pretty close to the actual time it will take to complete something :P
Sounds a lot like adhd (personal experience). But you get stuff done! That's the improtant part. Your mistake isn't making or breaking deadlines, your mistake is simply setting the entire project to one deadline. If instead you did what other good game devs do, what you're supposed to do and especially what adhders need to do - set reasonably tight deadlines for the tiniest steps of your project, you wouldn't be hating yourself for failing as much. Example: I have two hours, I will get one asset done. Before the end of the day (set a clear end or you'll be sitting there until morning), I'll have this mechanic working.
Especially for me, who has been learning godot on my own time and very slowly, I've spent the last 5 years doing 5 projects at once and not even getting 10% with any of them, but I've learned so much in the meantime, especially blender and problemsolving. It doesn't matter if it takes you years, you're learning. School doesn't take a few days to finish either. Small goals, step by step. Focus on the positive: You actually get Stuff Done
I've been missing your channel. Great to see your videos. Keep up the great work.
Really informative.
maybe you should need more clear goals. why breack your game dev process to smaller chunks and make seprate time limit so you have more focus on what you are doing.
Amazing video!
And super informative about deadlines
Now what I expected when I clicked the video, but a pleasant surprise for sure. High quality video, and a very underrated channel. Just subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Your talk about deadlines and procrastination is something I'm very familiar with.
I don't know if you ever heard of the "eat the frog" technique.
Basically, you start by doing the hardest / most annoying task. You force yourself to do that first instead of pushing further toward the deadline.
Obviously, it's not always easy to do that first as some things might be more important to do first, but it can help a bit.
Really nice video. Nicely edited and with a content that never felt tiring and kept me engaged, good stuff!
I tried to make a quick game for fun in 4 hours. Anyway it ended up taking like 4 months to a year because I’m lazy, and I still haven’t uploaded it either so dang.
I used to think motivation comes from inspiration, and that’s partly true for sure, but what do u so when your not inspired? Real motivation comes from discipline, stewardship of resources, and most importantly, a grander goal or purpose that you dedicate your life to. Once we discover our “why” we do what we do, we begin to just do and stop asking or wondering why we’re incapable. I’m Still learning everyday what it means to grow into purpose though, hope this helps or gives you something to think about! Awesome video.
I wasnt thinking I would see such an inspiring talk about deadlines in some random devlog about remaking a game in 2 hours
The background music sounds very similar to the Wizards of Waverly Place theme song
I'm getting tired of UA-cam recommending personal journeys. The video's fine, but all I want is to learn how to make games and none of any of this is getting me anywhere.
I am currently working on a job making an educational game in where I have a lot of freedom in the project and deadline, but that allows my mind to set to many goals or procrastinate too much. Experiments like these are great to see and do as you learn how to go about deadlines in a safe environment. great video!
Before I learned js: boring
After I learned js: oh that’s kinda cool.
really cool project and content! :)
But what if I remade Papa's Burgeria!
(Emphasis on "I".)
I was thinking about learning Godot. But..... no heightmaps?
You are underrated
I came here watching an other game dev video.. at the end you blew my mind. I mean you really said these things, which i am too afraid to think of myself and my never ending game im currently working on 🤯
Constant failure and learning things afterwards is the authentic game dev experience and you captured it well
ooooooh
This dude deserves more subscribers 👏
I dream of the day I can go back in time and beat myself up with no explanation.
if i had the oppurtunity i'd probably also go in a fight with my younger self xD
finding this channel was a blessing. Great content, hope you make it far broski
This is amazing! Well done
Anyone else noticed the Nitendo DS background sound?
When he said " Me and I." made my gears spin just a little
Just the one of us
3:24 it's cool how dead is highlighted and lines is literally just lines xD
How tf you have only 756sub's you deserve more
Omg it is making a videogame for fun. its not that deep.
This video was very entertaining to watch!
This is such a good video! Amazing edits!
anyone else wanna play the scratch project?
Can u link the original scratch game?
3:23 I swear I have heard this song somewhere
Hey man, whats the name of your "to-do list" widget? (PS: nice video)
I use either Trello or Notepad
You deserve soooo many more subscribers
how the hell do you only have 911 subs what the hell
My guy really had a crisis mid video.
I would like to see where the game goes honestly
This video is great, especially because the problem you describe isn't just limited to game or software development, it's everywhere and getting worse and worse. Without context and some root purpose, a frame of reference, you cannot create anything because what does it relate to? How is it's value determined? I believe this is also why so much "art" is just worthless because it doesn't mean anything. People forgot why they wanted to create these cultural beacons of deeper meaning in the first place. The philosophical findings that are portrayed in your videos are what makes them so interesting, I can feel that you want to understand the issue at hand and are not just looking for some quick attention.
why did this video get so deep. ahahah
Make a game in buiderbox game engine
Great video-it’s cool to see the progression of your skills since the scratch game. 2.5 hours isn’t much time for making a game, very ambitious of you!
2:07 WHY IS HE SO DSMN CUTE?!
can u do gamemaker next?
first comment in 11 months!
Can ya put it on mobile
I can feel your pain 3:45
I am continuously impressed with your work, I hope you keep at it.
A 2 hour deadline on a 3d game is extremely difficult.
Great video! It‘s a shame you don‘t get the recognition you deserve
Deadlines are the work of the devil :) Great video.
Interesting.
dope video. both inspiring and comedic at the end. Love the style
I decided to check out the original game, expecting it to have tons of plays because "this is a youtube video it must be popular." But to my surprise it only had like 6 views, which is crazy because your content is just as good as other indie developers. I enjoyed this video and I subscribed! Good luck on your game dev journey.
P.S. The flames look really good in the new game.
that got deep fast
i was not expecting a game dev challenge video to hit so hard
For the height map thing, do you mean a normal map?
Not quite, Godot has normal maps. Height maps are similar but are in black and white and hold less data.
@@LazyAlarm A few months late and you've probably figured it out already, but: Godot does have _depth maps_ which is the same thing. :)
Interesting...
