Box and one fails if Warriors play Poole instead of Klay. Now Poole knows whole defense is focussed on Steph and he can puncture through the zone. But it needs Kerr to be less stubborn and more adaptive.
Good thing Kerr is the most adaptive when it comes playoff time, like when he subbed Draymond/Poole for defense/offense multiple times in the span of a few minutes.
@@fried_riceee But that was more Mike Brown rather than Steve Kerr. It remains to be seen if Kerr can carry the coaching by himself without outstanding assistants.
@@sleepyheadz Okay i’ll trust the head coach of the team, it’s his coaching staff and his system lol. Mike Brown was an amazing assistant coach someone I would want back rn if we could. But before the warriors he hasn’t won anything… Kerr showed him how to win, under Kerr he learned how to win. Look at Mike Browns playoff record before Kerr. Mike Brown couldn’t make his name with guys like Kobe and Lebron. So many chances before Kerr but 0 rings.
The sample size is small, and the missed shots were mostly wide open shots that when averaged out, would fall more often than they miss. Granted the playoff is more intense but box-and-1 against Steph takes out your perimeter defenders, and Looney would only need to play hockey passes to find an open 3. Steph would play more decoy than actual scoring, and he is not one who would complain as long as the team wins. This would be a great matchup not just between the teams but between the coaches. From what's seen, Mike is a little bit ahead of Kerr in tactical alertness and adaptability.
Please do more of these with other great matchups in the playoffs, really interesting to see how teams will adjust and have their off, deff schemes. Question: Thoughts on the Bucks and chances of them winning this year? Defensively they look good, Lopez has been great all year. Great role players and a deep bench.
Raptors ran Box + 1 against the Warriors with some success Yes Klay and KD were injured at the time, for sure But zones have some historical success against Golden State 🙂 Great video Daniel Thank you 👍🏻
Nah man this defense won’t hold up a whole game even if they try it. That being said Steph 30+ and klay 20+ is a bit wild man. Depends if klay comes in hot like if they double team Steph and he finds open klay you good bruv
All I see with this defensive scheme is that it's leaving warriors shooters wide open. You don't want that in the playoffs against the warriors. Wiggins, Poole, and Klay wide open will simply not work for the kings. And Steph acts as a decoy more often than not for those guys as he's not ball dominant. If it's against someone like Dame, the box and one would work, not against Curry. That was why the Celtics lost game 5 last year. You simply can't dare anyone on the warriors roster to shoot wide open, except Draymond, not even JK. The warriors are far too experienced. I don't know man. I don't just see it working in a seven games series.
the funy thing is tho the warriors aing goina be missing all these shots, from what i see sac have to pray warriors shoot below 30% from field for the entire series
This was when klay was struggling you can’t box and one curry with wiggs, klay, or Poole now. Nobody on the kings can individually guard steph so they might as well blitz steph all game. But know the warriors will kill a box and one.
Great analysis of the King’s defensive schemes. What do you think the Lakers chances of a deep run in the playoffs? I think they will probably get into the 2nd round but I am not as confident after that because of their inconsistent play and coaching issues.
fun fact: They did not practice the Box and 1 before this game, and they did not even talk about it at shootaround. It was implemented in-game and Brown was surprised at how well it worked as well as how not-horrible they executed it. No doubt they practiced it this week and got the kinks out
@Mike true, it only gets harder from here, but that goes both ways. Keegan and Kevin were unused weapons and I'm sure they'll be sharp tomorrow. Wiggins won't miss another shot like that I'm sure. Both teams have another level and I'm looking forward to it
People that don't watch the whole video will think you mean "run box and 1 all game". Also we've actually seen the box and 1 a few times since 2019. Issue is there was another ball handler so it was null
Great video as always. I got a question: Do you think the nuggets will be able to hide Jokic in the PnR against crazy good offenses like the Kings, Warriors or Suns? And if not, do you think they can just outscore opponents and use their home advantage to get to the finals, or are they gonna get bounced early?
They might pre-switch, but this will leave the smaller ones defending Dray or Looney, or they might try to play triangle and 2, but this will leave the roll man open. At the end of the day, they probably will have to pick the poisons.
Hey Danial, here's something I've been thinking about. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this. This may be my bias, but I feel like teams are having more trouble with half-field attacks these days compared to a few years ago. I think they tend to prefer long-armed players with high athletic abilities who are defensively useful and elastic than players who may be effective on half-court offense but also soft. As the talent level in the league increases, the skill threshold to compensate for softness also rises. I believe that finding the right combination is difficult, which is why we're seeing this result. Do you this is odd? What do you think about it
Seeing as Mike Brown used to coach for the Dubs, the question we should be asking is: "If it's so successful, why did he only use it 6 times?" One possible answer: "It's only successful when used infrequently. "
Yup, I think that holds true for any defensive scheme. You do it long enough and teams will figure it out. Man to man and switching lay the back bone of the defense but throw in a random box and one or zone and it might throw the offense in a crucial moment of the game. Very interesting
Thanks for a breakdown! Q: considering overall raise of offensive talent in the league, how you’d describe a modern superstar? Player who can beat any defensive coverage or smthing else?
I think Mike Brown will put Sabonis on Klay…that’s the Kings best option to keep Sabonis on the court. The counter, of course is for Kerr to switch up Klay for Poole… but no way he will do that.
It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have the personnel to stop the Warriors offense. Don’t let this “breakdown” video fool you into thinking the Kings can stop the Warriors. They can’t. Use common sense people.
Box and 1 only works if the offensive player you are running it against trys to force the action. Steph has seen this defiance multiple times in the playoffs. He is one of the least selfish superstars we have ever seen, and regularly defers to the open man. It works occasionally on individual possessions, but the idea of running this consistently against a superb passing ans shooting warriors team is absurd. you would get run off the court.

Yea way to small sample size and playoff warriors offense flows differently

Awesome video! I can’t wait to see your breakdowns of the fantastic playoff basketball we’ve been treated to
Never understood why they call it a stop if the player misses a wide open shot
And Mike Brown was an assistant coach to Warriors, so he knows Warriors tendencies in and out especially defensively
So what. He still has to have the personnel to stop a great player like Steph, and he doesn’t.

Bingo. If JP was on the floor when they tried this, their Box-n-1 would’ve got exposed.
Imo this can only work when used for some single possessions and with Klay on the bench

Hi Daniel
You can leave Looney and Draymond wide open with no danger for your defense.
It’s a box and one, the one is on Steph and the rest are in a 2-2 zone.
