  • Avignon is a beautiful city located in southeastern France, in the region of Provence. Known for its stunning architecture and rich history, Avignon is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Palais des Papes, a Gothic-style palace that served as the residence of the Popes in the 14th century. Avignon is also famous for its annual festival, the Avignon Festival, which showcases a diverse range of performing arts including theater, dance, and music. With its charming narrow streets, vibrant markets, and delicious cuisine, Avignon is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the South of France.

Hello Janus, I'm so glad I found this video. I have in France in beautiful de Provence and Gordes, but for some reason I wasn't in Avignon. And I'm talking about 2011. Now I'm thinking of going to Avignon, still doing some research.
What I would like to know is if in November, for example, there are less tourists.

    Hi, Sir J! 😀
Thank you once more for allowing us to tag along. ✨️🫰🏻
6:42 I guess those hats make the street look and keep cool (helps block excess sunlight?). What street is this, btw?
8:06 quite interesting to find casually passing by (in dark robe with a tote bag and goat headgear😁)
9:15 Makes me wonder how many performances are happening in a night… It seems like these ads are supposedly dangled on strings. I hope those that have set them up find time to clean them as well.
10:23 Very impressive in size and workmanship considering how old it is… and remains functional too!

You are right, it’s quite a beautiful place. I’m afraid it requires some special cleaning up to get rid of the waste. You find lots of people dressed up to advertise their theatre plays

Thank you for your latest video! I did not expect so many tourists; as a matter of fact, the city ii overcrowded. I do not like either this wastefulness of paper and cardboard to advertise cultural events. I see that the tourist industry has its negative aspects even in such a country like France. I have enjoyed the tour of Avignon. Your videos and tips serve as a perfect travel guide!

Interesting perspective. As I passed Avignon on the train, to get to Marseille, I kept feeling missed out. I guess not. I’ll be back in the area next year, and I’m trying to figure out my 1 or 2 day trip outside of Marseille. I guess I can skip Avignon.

    I'm an "Avignonnais".
Just for your information : all the posters that are hung/plastered around the city centre are there for the duration of the "festival d'Avignon" (biggest theatre festival in the world).
Its been a few years now since the city hall along with the festival directors have made big decisions over the posters. There are way less posters than there used to be 5 years prior to 2023 for example, because now each company is not allowed to produce and hung/plaster more than 150 posters per show. Also, the paper used to produce these posters is 100% made out of recycled paper.
Finally, I must say that plastering/hunging all these posters everywhere is absolutely part and parcels of the festival, it's very nice to see in reality and the posters allow us to have interest or not over performances.
The 2023 edition offers slightly more than 1500 performances to attend from 5th july up until the 29th.
Actually, our beautiful city of Avignon is bursting in this period of time and that absolutely delightful ^^!

Thank you for the additional info Thomas and greetings to beautiful Avignon. I’m glad it seems to have already been reduced. I personally found it still quite overwhelming and had a hard time understanding the value add of all these posters. There are hundreds of shows and that times 150 still adds up. Most of the ones I saw where hung in beautiful medieval places or as flyers trashed on the ground. I personally preferred the creative advertising parades of show cast members and street shows with people in costumes 😊

Why a Popes' palace in Avignon?
The archbishop of Bordeaux Bertrand de Got elected pope as Clement V, sick during his journey to Rome in the grip of civil war between aristocratic clans, decided provisionally in 1309 to stop in the comtat Venaissin (present department of Vaucluse) territory which the king of France had ceded in 1274 to the papacy following a treaty concluded during the Albigensian Crusade in which France conquered in the 13th century between 1226 and 1271 the lands of the Count of Toulouse who supported the Cathar heretics, lands that included Venaissin County. This halt was to be temporary but Clement V died in 1314 and his successor the French Jacques Duèze, John XXII, who had been bishop of Avignon and appreciated the city, decided to settle there because the civil war was raging in Rome and the successive French popes also remained in the city located at the crossroads of the communication between the south and the north of Europe at the difference of Rome, which was more interesting diplomatically and in case of attack it was enough to cross the Rhone to return to the kingdom of France under the protection of the king of France. Of course the installation of the popes in Avignon was criticized by the Italians, the poet Petrarch comparing it to the "captivity of Babylon". Finally under pressure, the civil war having ended in Rome, Pope Gregory XI decided to leave Avignon and return to Rome in 1378 where he died as soon as he returned. The Roman people wanting to avoid the departure of the new pope in Avignon rose up and invaded the pontifical palace in order to compel the conclave of cardinals to elect an Italian pope which was done with Urban VI but the cardinals having left Rome decided that the election of the pope having been made under pressure, was null and elected another pope Clement VII who returned to Avignon. His election being obviously not recognized by the pope of Rome, thus began the struggle between the pope of Rome and that of Avignon called the Great Western Schism which ended in 1418, the two popes reciprocally excommunicating the Council of Constance in 1417 declaring themselves superior to the pope, deposed the two popes of Rome and Avignon and elected a new pope Martin V.The ramparts of Avignon, which had been destroyed in 1226 when the city was taken by the King of France Louis VIII during the 2nd Albigensian Crusade, were rebuilt during the reign of Pope Innocent VI (1352-1362) for it was a matter of protecting the city where the popes had lived since 1305 of the "Great Companies", mercenary soldiers employed by the kings of France and England during the hundred-year war between these countries, but who during periods of idle and unpaid truces looted the territories and the kingdom of France being impoverished by war and plague, the big companies headed towards the rich states of the pope in the south of France spared by war. The ramparts of Avignon have 7 gates by reference to the 7 hills of Rome because Avignon residence of the popes was the capital of Christendom between 1309 and 1403, date of the spectacular escape in boat on the Rhone of Pope Benedict XIII, the Spanish Pedro de Luna , the city of Avignon having been besieged for 5 years by the arrest of the king of France who wanted to force this pope to abdicate in order to put an end to the great schism of the West, namely the conflict opposing since 1378, the pope of Rome to the pope of Avignon, not reconvened in Rome and qualified as Antipape but which was more powerful than that of Rome because the pope of Avignon had the papal treasure that Pope Gregoire XI who resided in Avignon could not take with him when he left for Rome in 1378.
