Replacing the grease and bearings was easy, but getting the springs off & back on was quite the challenge. I did my rear dif last year also added heavy tow leaf to the pack not terribly to hard just time consuming good luck we are glad to hear little lady is feeling better.
I have to replace the rear shackle & brackets for my pickup as well as take the box off & strengthen it. I priced the shackle bracket kit at GMC & it is 4 times the price that I can get from Amazon. Thing is, it is after market & comes from China. So, I guess I'll have to wait an extra few weeks until it comes from China. It's good that you are a fix-it-yourself kind of guy. Keeping a work truck going can be heavy on the few dollars you don't have. Anyway, keep moving forward my friend.
It's amazing the difference in price. Funny thing is, at the parts house, most of the parts they have are from China or Mexico anyway. It's hard to find USA made anything. What really irritates me, is that they almost never have things in stock anymore. They can have it here in the morning, but the price is higher and they add shipping. If you aren't in a hurry, you can get free shipping and half the cost though Amazon or Ebay. Just need to be positive it's the right part, returning it can be hard sometimes.
Good Morning Muskrat, I would really be dreading this job ,but seems like the worst part some of these projects is just getting started. 😢 Good Luck with your truck. And it's Great to hear that Cindy is doing much better. 😊

May your Cindy continue to improve her health and your traps fill with fur.
Good Morning! Thanks! I know he will enjoy those books. I'm late sending them, they were supposed to be for his birthday. That Outdoor Survival Skills one, has always been one of my favorites. The other one, Possum Living, is just fun to read. It was written by a little girl in the 1970's. One of the first "Off Grid" type books. She's kind of funny and pretty smart in her thinking.
@@MuskratOutdoors I'm thinking I NEED to get Possum Living for myself. I could use some funny & smart right about now. I know it's hard to believe but a Survival section of a 1940's Boy Scout book is what helped turn me around when I was a lil demon on earth. Funny how life works out. You all ( You, Your Cindy, Kevin & Clan ) make my day better just by showing the world a little bit of your lives. About 13 or 14 yrs ago I wen't to live with my Father and Brother to help my brother take care of my dad. I had never even touched a computer before then. Now the very same computer has become my life. Funny how life works out. Thank you Gary for being you and sharing your life with us.
Same here. Rebuilding the Jeeps was fun because I didn't "have to". I had something to drive, and worked on them when I felt like it. This one is a "Have to" and that takes every bit of the "fun" out of it.
It's a process getting all that done. I've done a lot of diy repairs because I can't always afford to pay somebody else to do it. That gear oil smells nasty doesn't it? Good day yall!
It is stinky stuff! Me too. Unless it's electrical I can fix it myself most of the time. I can't afford $75-$100 per hour shop fees + parts on my $200 per week paycheck.....
Love your videos. Keep making your fixing videos love them and what about that polaris snowmobile are you going to be using it this winter. Have a great day.
Thank you! I hope to use that snowmobile. I need to go through it yet and make sure it will run. It did when I used it last, but it's been several years now. It has premium gas, no moonshine in it, along with some stabil gas stabilizer. I'll drain it out anyway and put in fresh. Change the plugs too....Hopefully it will be OK. It's a 25 mile walk hope if it quits!
I had a neighbor ask me to change out his throwout bearing because he swore it was going out! He'd just had the clutch replaced 6 months before. I jacked up the truck and put it on stands and started it up and put it in gear! There was a little noise there but when i crawled under it the noise was coming from the rear-end! I pulled off the cover and one of the spider gears was shredding! I tried to find a new one ! No such animal around!! I found one in a Wrecking yard that matched it! It worked until his nephew totaled the truck!
That's a lot easier than a throw out bearing! I had a spider gear crack in my Jeep years ago....not good, but made it home. Junk yard parts are good parts. Most times the reason the truck is there is not because of the part you need.
The Ring and Pinion gears need adjusted for backlash. I don't have the tools to do that, and I'm not sure how exactly if I did have them. I will end up using some of the parts from the old one too though.
Oh great.....I got this one from the junkyard in town. It was $300, but the bearings I needed alone would have been $265. I probably had chipped gears too, so this is a cheaper way to go. The other stuff I'm changing might not have been needed, but now it will be new. Good luck!
@@MuskratOutdoors thanks I appreciate it I was actually just redoing brakes and a couple wheel seals and the bearing and whoever had to pick up before me cross threaded the locking nut to hold the hub and the bearings in so the spindle shot. Hell I'll look down here and Idaho falls and see what I can find at the pick and pull
I got mine fixed and back in business! I'm going to take it on a test run today

Good to hear Cindy is feeling better! I always felt lucky that I could do my own work on my cars and trucks. Most of my work was done outside in the weather no matter how bad. My first thought was, will he replace the bearings and seals? lol We do what we have to do!! I always enjoy watching you work! I never get tired or greasy! lol (just poking fun). I have been there! Thanks for sharing this and looking forward to seeing those trap sets! Have a good day and better week ahead! Healing prayers for Mrs. Cindy!
Me too. She sure had me worried! I'm sure not getting much of a trapping season so far.....Should be ready when Wolves open though!
Glad to hear that Cindy is feeling better. Hopefully everything goes well put it all back together......nice video Muskrat.....👍🤙
Thank you! She is doing much better! I hope I can finish this today or tomorrow.....tired of messing with it!
I did my rear dif last year also added heavy tow leaf to the pack not terribly to hard just time consuming good luck we are glad to hear little lady is feeling better.
I don't think it will be too bad really. I'd rather do something else though.
Happy Sunday all❤
Same to you.
@AlexT-k7p GOD BLESS AND YOUR FAMILY 💗
THANK YOU!

Good Morning 🌄
GOOD MORNING!
Good morning friend be safe out there
Good Morning! Thank you, you too!
Good news! Cindy's getting better.
She is! Still moving slow, but much better. It's been a full week now.
@@MuskratOutdoors We have the exact same problems here.
Good Morning Muskrat, I would really be dreading this job ,but seems like the worst part some of these projects is just getting started. 😢 Good Luck with your truck. And it's Great to hear that Cindy is doing much better. 😊
Good Morning! Me too. I don't really want to do it, but there's not much choice. I'm grateful she is getting better! She sure had me worried....
Good morning. Good idea changing what you can while it's apart. I learned that lesson myself lol. I haven't been around much lately so I have some videos to binge through. I hope it works well for you. Have a great day
Good Morning! Thanks! They ain't exciting, but most times life isn't!
By the way,
We are all sleeping better and the calmness is all around.
Have a great day.
Here too! Amazing ain't it? Already things are getting better!
You can drive a car with your left hand you can drive one with your right hand or you can drive with both hands, its still driving a car. Im sure you will get it done and it will be fine!
Great comparisons.
Absolutely! THANK YOU!
Yep change out any and all the suspicious parts that need it. “ An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure “
I agree. It's easier now than later.
Good mornin and many blessings Gary. That was a great Birthday gift you two sent Kevin. Isn't it funny how they say critic's are? Like a food critic doesn't cook most critics don't do what they are criticizing. Too bad you don't have one of those Solar power stations like Kevin and Miss Kitty got for your work shop until they get the power in there.
Good morning, I have to fix my own stuff, cant afford any mechanic, dont enjoy it. Good luck.
Same here. Rebuilding the Jeeps was fun because I didn't "have to". I had something to drive, and worked on them when I felt like it. This one is a "Have to" and that takes every bit of the "fun" out of it.
@MuskratOutdoors I know the feeling, I need a inspection an need 2 front tires. Its always something
9.43 slow but steady like a donkey eating a thistle 🤣🤣🤣
HA! I like that!
Looks to be a one piece bearing and seal combo. Like the gm 10 bolt rears.
Called floater bearing cage.
I dunno....I think it's gunna stay in there though!
Nice working on it off the pickup. Good luck with it.🇺🇲🌲🔥🔪
It is actually. Standing up makes things a lot easier to do.
good start
Slow, but sure....
Gary,Rock auto online auto parts store u can get those drums alot cheaper.
That's a good store.
Good to know! I've never bought from them.
Morning
Good Morning!
Hopefully the power of god will help! Peace
It always does! Thank you!
What year is that jeep inn the background?
The green one and the pickup are both 1948. The Yellow one is a 1968.
Just a question why didn't you just take the parts off the rear end you got and replace the parts that you needed with both reagents
The Ring and Pinion gears need adjusted for backlash. I don't have the tools to do that, and I'm not sure how exactly if I did have them. I will end up using some of the parts from the old one too though.
Wouldn't you know it my rear end is bad in my 97 Dodge. Where did you find that one?
No one usually ever "services" differentials, they do have a service interval......(like every 50K after break in)
They don't. We change the engine oil, but never the rest. Transmissions and differentials wear too and we really should change it once in awhile.
@@MuskratOutdoors I am guilty of not doing it myself cause it is kind of a pain......
Put new Bearings and seals and brakes on it while u have it out u wont regret it then u know its a total rebuild on most of it
I agree. It might not need them, but at least those parts will be new.
Mornin' !
GOOD MORNING!
Do you think it broke from all the power stands you do ? Lol, I'm glad you're getting it done, and cindy is feeling better.
HA! I think that U-Joint wallowed out the seal and loosened the gear nut. Just bad luck!
Probably won't hurt to get some hiking boots
Oh come on now...! HA!
Did you check the gear ratio
Yep. 3:55
I,ve bought diffrent parts from Rock auto and can,t complain. Rotors for the back of our sante fe were 50 % cheaper
That's good to know. I've never bought from them before.
Good morning😊
Good Morning Amye!
