    I have replicated this procedure and the results are amazing. I've upgraded to a 55 gal. drum, my wife's car battery and both rear shocks as hangers (they absorb the violent chemical reaction). I converted sporks to Yen and used honey badger urine as a catalyst. Thanks Ichiban Moto!!!!

    I didn't have any batteries lying around, for this, so I used the 6Kv generator, at work. I hooked it up over my lunch break. When I came back, the part had halved in mass, the water was gone, and the metal is heat stained blue. Is this normal?

    • @Rebecka_J
      @Rebecka_J 5 років тому

      The soda crystals sold here are slightly different. They are "sodium carbonate decahydrate", which means they include water molecules which that American washing soda does not.
      But one company actually recommends using their soda crystals for this purpose, albeit you may need more than a few sporkfuls. ua-cam.com/video/glqGDVul-jU/v-deo.html
      Although there is at least one British company which sells washing soda (sodium carbonate) cheaply online if you really want that.

    As someone who has performed quite a few electrolysis experiments as of late I would like to warn people about electrolysis dangers using direct current such as alkaline batteries. Many electrostimulated energy transfers are used with AC current to heat liquids such as water which is a dangerous but very quick way to do so and has less of a chance of creating harmful biproducts because the ion diffusion has gaps in the cycle of alternating current unable to split the hydrogen atoms and connect them to the cathode. Direct current such as displayed in the video however can create a number of noxious and sometimes fatal gases even using neutral bases such as sodium carbonate the gas becomes trapped in bubble form and connects to the cathode and is released when the density is greater than the liquid containing it. Pure water will create hydrogen gas which even in small amount trapped can create a small explosion with flame. Adding Sodium to speed up the process of electron transfer as a bridge will result in sodium hydroxide, technically lye, which is why carbon is used to absorb it. But this is still dangerous stuff so ventilation is important even with a 1.5 volt AA the amount of gas that can build up over night could have the potential to be dangerous.

    • @IchibanMoto
      @IchibanMoto  8 років тому

      +Terry Heeter simple low voltage DC is very effective as electrons flow from negative to positive.

    • @KANNABULL
      @KANNABULL 8 років тому

      Yeah but I'm talking about leaving it on overnight hydrogen gas build up and other lewis based compounds that combine with the rust can even create arsenic gases because of the sulfur oxide. Just a fair warning ventilation is important that's all a great video, just even lower DC current can build up alot of hydrogen gas in just thirty minutes.

    • @IchibanMoto
      @IchibanMoto  8 років тому

      +Terry Heeter just let it run until the rust is gone, however long that is for what you are de-rusting

    • @wilsjane
      @wilsjane 8 років тому +2

      You need to limit the current flow, that is why a dry battery is ideal. A current regulated power supply is very costly, but you can use a normal DC power supply with a lamp in series with the plating bath. A car battery with the lamp in series will also work. To remove all the rust first, a 50% solution of hydrochloric acid (sold as spirit of salts in the UK) is much better than just scraping it off, since it removes the corrosion that would otherwise be left in the pitting. For a perfect repair, acid bath, electroplate, then fill any pitting with epoxy filler, sand down and then re-plate to cover the bare metal where you have sanded. the plating will not cover the tiny spots of filler, but if you spray paint the component the plating will prevent future corrosion from breaking through again.

    I have a 1971 Yamaha 350 that was given to be via my aunt who just passed away recently. it has heavy rust on it. the bike only has 2500 miles on it, and the rust is because it was kept in a shed that was rotted out, and lots of moisture was able to reach the vulnerable parts that can rust out. The last it was tagged, and on the road was 1984. I need to do this on a large scale. could I use something like a battery charger? If so, how long should I keep it in the solution? Could it be done in less time as well? Also, any tips on getting rust out of the fuel tank? When she left it sit, there was a bit of fuel in the tank. Also, should I take the entire engine apart, and put all new seals in? I don't have a lot of money, so I need to keep it as cheap as I can.. Any help on this situation would be appreciated. Thanks!!

    • @IchibanMoto
      @IchibanMoto  8 років тому +2

      If the motor is not seized from rust, you could first perform a leakdown test on the motor, to see if the seals are leaking . You might be lucky, however years are the enemy of those old rubber seals, not use or miles. On an unknown motor that has been sitting exposed like that for many years, I would pull it apart. The cost of a seal and gasket kit a good investment to ensure everything inside is proper prior to dealing with the rusty outside of bits. If you will be stripping the bike down, you might consider just blasting everything. I do need to make a video on how to de-rust a fuel tank. I will add that to the list.

    When using a single battery there is little current. Those who decide to kick it up by using a car battery charger or higher voltage source should do so in a well ventilated area. As the current increases you should see more bubbles coming off the electrodes. That will be pure oxygen and hydrogen. Hydrogen is highly flammable, particularly so in the presence of extra oxygen.

    Im trying to de-rust a bunch of old Honda bolts for my car. Ive done this EXACT method & watched almost every video on the subject youtube can offer. I hook it my system up(currently using rebar as my poss & the part as my neg). After this is done all I see is a few bubbles from the part, then a ton on the rebar. Ive used washers, other bolts you name it..Still same result as if I have done this backwards. Example, I used a bolt I think came from a computer & instead of taking rust off, it took the shiny silver coating off the poss bolt & transferred all the color over the rust to the bolt I was trying to DE rust. This has happened on every attempt, I figure im missing something simple but I cant figure it out. This would be EXTREMELY helpful if I can get this to clean any of my bolts. Ive used vinegar( as well as other methods) & then rubbed several different types of oils on 10 of the same bolts, the only bolt that didn't re rest badly was the one that I put gun oil on(Mpro a little to costly for my project). Can anyone help? Is it working right maybe I just don't see it this way....ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!

      +Chem istry Electrons flow from negative to positive, so the part you want the rust removed from is negative. To protect the part after de-rusting, I plate it with zinc by reversing this process .

    • @chemistry4425
      @chemistry4425 8 років тому

      I think I was over looking a couple things due to watching many videos. I was afraid of leaving it connected the wrong way. To my knowledge a majority of the bubbles should be coming from the neg/part, not the positive but the pos side always bubbles more, no matter what. I had planned on trying to plate something if things worked out but Ill be great with just clean at the moment. I changed my set up & am giving it another shot on a non important part, with any luck it should work smoothly. Thanks!

    is this method can use for 1095 carbon steel sword? cuz i tried many method but still not 100% gone,still have black dots on the steel...help me,im almost giving up right now to remove deep rust on my katana..

    • @zenengineer9277
      @zenengineer9277 8 років тому

      Alternate chemical remover is hot (keep below boiling) 10% solution of citric acid. Also takes rust or blood stains out of textiles and leather. No electrical connections. More selective and gentle than naval jelly (aka, phosphoric acid). Citric acid commonly available in home canning supplies. Works well on fine threaded parts. If your 1095 surface is deeply pitted you may have no choice but to selectively abrade down and re-polish. That high carbon steel is notorious for easily rusting. Good luck and keep surface oiled if successful.
