It’s pretty difficult to get a sailing boat to roll. Maybe it was more obvious to him that it wasn’t that close yet. He was talking about draining because taking just three or so waves like that in quick succession could have made for a really bad time. You don’t usually sail with as thin margins as that.
His boat has a large "cruising keel" about half the length of the boat, not a little "fin keel". That long, heavy keel with a huge surface area can move back and forth under water fairly easily. But the farther you lean, the closer it gets to the surface, and you're almost never going to get a cruising keel out of the water, which is what you would need to fully capsize. Cruising boats have a cruising keel for exactly that reason, and because they hold a heading in heavy weather better than a fin keel. He knows that, and owns that boat for that reason, and doesn't worry about capsizing for that reason. He also has ways of pumping or bailing water out of the cockpit, but doing that while sailing in those conditions is 1) very difficult and 2) a moot point because it's just going to fill again. Like he said, Time to head in.
One day I was lazily taking a bath and realized how slow the bathtub drained and that made me think if my cockpit drains … Next thing I did the next winter was to add two more drain holes each being doubled. It was more effective a couple of times : when the cockpit could had been filled and drain into the cabin… Nothing fancy in terms of weather : just left Jersey Island at the wrong time and got caught in the Raz Blanchard by a force 6. I would advise you to tuck these sheets away : as loose as they are they're not great help for the water to drain. But You already know that I suppose. Good video.
If you sail out of it you a good sailor . I am Dutch and I have seen swells and waves so big you would not have a change . If this is winter you had a lucky day
North sea is no joke. It's relatively shallow, so the waves can get crazy. I was on a massive ferry from dover to calais and even the crew was worried. (most of the passengers were sick)
My dad was in the Dutch navy in the seventies. Sailed on a 65m mine sweeper. He's told me stories about sailing in the North Sea along an identical sister ship. They'd lose sight of each other, sometimes, when both were in a trough. You're a braver man than I am, going out there in that tiny dinghy.
The north sea can be a lot meaner, probably better to not go on autopilot, 2 of those waves, and you'll be close to sinking, that water stay's in way too long.

(Maybe) they say it night and day boat motion under small sail plan down wind.
Most all, with exception of coast guards rescue boats boats, boat designers are faulty designed with cockpits scuppers holes far too small for true safety for the skipper, crew and boats. When I buy a sailboat that is one thing on my list will be to enlarge the cockpit scuppers by at least 2". That does mean one has to personally keep a cleaner neatly kept cockpit to ensure the a line that is not neatly stowed and so that it does not tangle the skeg and rudder. A skipper or crew does not need to be slushing around in sea water while trying to steer the boat in order to try to avoid crashing waves. Jim Rodgers
I know you are good sailor. Did you use to tiller steer? Are you using wind vane there or auto pilot sir? I loved your voyage to the Viking party a few years ago. ❤ bless you.
Try a gale in Cook Straight in New Zealand. I've seen waves higher than the 20m masthead. Still, a following sea is never nice. Head into it next time.
I went on a boat in Sydney and you could turn it half in the water and when it flipped back up the water drained out in like 3 secs. It was a little yaught thing, pretty big with two wheels but it was an amazing thing how it drained water. I don't know how it did it
I guess I don't understand. This video shows me what seems to be a serious issue, the amount of water taken aboard. But no solution is presented. You posted this video, so obviously you made it. Did you just not take on more water, or did it get worse?

Common problem. Scuppers are too small. That cockpit needs to drain in seconds, not minutes.
Yes, excellent time to realise your scuppers are too small, bet you’ll remember now and fix that issue.
Those loose, unstowed sheets are unforgivable and can easily clog the scuppers.

Windvane all the way!
How does your boat hold course?
What kind of keel and draft do you have? Surprised how far over you got knocked by a wave. (I have sailed across two oceans)
I'm a relatively new (6 years) sailor, so maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of think this is why people don't usually sail the North Sea in winter.
Free surface effect, mass above the centre of gravity, those waves are gone decimate any memory of a GM and make the rolls super slight
More adds in shorts please. “The ray marine stood me strong in the harsh conditions !”
It sure did☺️
And those aren't even the biggest waves the North Sea has to offer! They get much, much bigger!
How big is your boat?
Nah I'm cool. Don't have many fears, and I'm a great swimmer... but the deep sea terrifies me
Just remember the North Sea is very cold almost freezing cold. It's the freezing cold water that would claim you.
@Not_Sure_ I would almost prefer that cuz at least I'd die quicker
Dang swamped! When it comes to the engineering design of your hull and boat, couple terms to understand, pitch pole and knockdown.
