My books and videos are all grounded in what I actually do, I make sure you can see the evidence. For example if I suggest sowing carrots in November, take a look at my monthly tours to see them growing and my harvest videos for May to see the actual results. I'm not just about regurgitaing information from the backs of seed packets!

Perfect timing ... Hubby has just changed my growlight system to LED's. I used to have florescent tubes attached to the underside of some cheap shelving, yesterday the tubes came out & 2 strips of ribbon LEDs went in. 👍
Super again Steve. I still haven’t got any grow lights but by watching this it gives me an opportunity to assess how I can maximise the options I have and consider whether I should get them in the future.

I love the grow lights and keeping an eye on my seedlings in the house. Thats a good idea keeping the seed trays in water to keep the slugs out..thanks for the tip
It's the the trays in water Bernadette, it's the feet of the bench they are on, that are in water. The feet are actually metal bolts too : All the best - Steve
I'm just starting using a propper grow light setup. I dont have the space in the house, so the only space i have is in an unheated garage.
I have a .6m x 1.2m x 1.8m propagator Grow Tent with a radiator in the bottom, which kicks in for 15 min in every 75 min, keeping the temps between 15 and 20 degrees C nicely.
Plan is to use this mainly for the peppers and tomatoes, and once they get too large for one shelf, Im hoping to be able to take out 2 shelves to get the height up for larger plants.
Everything else, I should be able to start off in the tent and then move down to the greenhouse after a little while.
Previously, everything got started off on a colapsable table in the dining room in April, so getting a couple of months' head start should help me improve.

@Steve's Seaside Kitchen Garden & Allotment Hope so, just getting the seed trays in there at the moment. Started off my onions in there as well but they will move down to the plot when they are big enough.

lol, no I don't grow anything to maturity under lights, ideally only 14 days under lights at this time of year, except peppers and a few tomatoes
I got a ticking off for saying our greenhouse farmers should have been given financial support to keep going. People say growing out of season is detroying the planet. They will be banning cows for being windy next 😫
I don’t consider myself to be growing out of season Lynn, since I don’t use heat at all or light for more than 2-3 weeks. I’m not sure how I feel about farmers in the uk growing tomatoes and cucumbers for harvest in spring though, seems better to get them from Spain and wait a few months like I do : all the best - Steve

I live in Spain and the tomato’s taste like water lol grow your own whenever you can
They taste like water grown early in the year here too, even under grow lights so I don’t grow them early : all the best - Steve
@donwilliamson2661 also, coffee, tea, spices, sugar, wheat....from Ukraine, sunflower oil from Ukraine. Where do I start really? Fabrics?? Wood? So much now we have to import 'out of our season'. The impact on the planet of trade deals with Newzealnd (not just for lamb....I live in Wales....don't me started...lol) India, Australia, Indonesia...just because we left the EU. Imagine the impact of the PM and mp's using government planes to travel in order to set up new trade agreements. What happened to Zoom?
Hi Steve. Are you using the dimmers on your grow lights? You should be, they don’t need too much intensity.
And will you be doing a video on when and what you do with your seedlings when there ready to plant?

Hi Steve, I’ve found it varies a lot by type of veg and time of life, some of my lights don’t have dimmers so I’m able to compare but yes I use the dimmers sometimes. I’ve hundreds of videos on planting seedlings : all the best - Steve
Hi Steve, do you have any video or suggestions for green house heating setup? I’m trying to grow different varieties of chilis but growth seems to have stunted due to cold. Thanks

Some are better than others, depends on your needs. I’ve added comments to each light in my store explaining my views on them

She loved the idea, she’s a passionate cook and she knows where all of her ingredients come from and anything I can do to grow more variety, better quality and more of the year she’s in favour of

Hi Steve, are you finding the lights expensive to run?
Each light is about 34p a day and it takes 14 days for a tray of seedlings and a light does 3 trays, so that’s £1.50 per tray. A tray typically fills 2 m2 and a m2 yields about £10/succession so that’s 75p for an extra £10 of harvest. But that’s the finances, mainly I do it for the fun
Hi Steve, Thanks for an interesting video. I've just moved my grow lights to a bedroom and have just purchased a fan. How long do you tend to have the fan on for? Thanks for any advice
It’s a little fan so it could stay on all the time the lights are on, provided it’s not too close. The bigger the fan the further away and or the less time it’s on. I have a big fan in the conservatory, I have that on at mid day, for a few hours : all the best - Steve

Do you just give everything in the bedroom 10 hours a day with lights then?
My onions are about 1-2 inch tall. I’m worried about moving them out to the polytunnel at the mo because of the cold night time temps this coming week.
The bedroom lights are on from 7am until 9pm, ie 14 hours, because I want them to think it’s April : all the best - Steve

Have you ever used the conservatory to start of early potatoes in buckets or would they be too messy and big?
I have and I do have videos of that, see my guide to growing potatoes. It’s only worth it if you really don’t want to buy potatoes!
@@SteveRichards I start my earl8es off in the polytunnel but it can't generate the same heat as a conservatory but you have a fantastic option if we were to get hard frost late on.
We can get a hard frost in May, so it's always a bit nerve wracking! : All the best - Steve
@@SteveRichards I always keep my eye balls glued to the weather in May as my indoor space runs out I have keep my potatoes outside and have a few spare water pipe hoops I can keep them under a couple of layers of fleece and a polythene sheet on top as this works fine with light frost over night.
