No in the 80's rappers didn't dance. Rare exceptions. They had background dancers who killed it. But only a handful of rappers actually danced back then. More like 3.

I was actually at the Boston Music Hall Of Fame Awards a few wks ago. They did a tribute to artists who died. Brad Delp's adult children were there. I ended up being out front on the sidewalk while we all waited for our rides. We all got talking and I was able to tell them how much this song and all of Boston meant to me. Felt great!
You should try their early 80s songs like "Cool it now" "Mr Telephone Man" and "Popcorn love" - get to see them as young boys and when bobby brown was part of the group. They were meant to be a modern day jackson 5 if I recall correctly

New Edition was the 80's version of The Jackson 5 from Candy Girl to Can You Stand The Rain. I was in high school when Heart Break was released in the Fall of 1988 and If It Isn't Love was the first track from the album. There was a series of videos that told a story with If It Isn't Love, You're Not My Kind Of Girl and Can You Stand The Rain. Of course Bobby Brown released his Don't Be Cruel album in the Fall/Winter of 1988 as well. In 1989 there was a tour featuring New Edition as the headliner with Bobby Brown and Al B. Sure. The Heart Break album still going strong, 32 years later👍
We have Mr Brooke Payne to thank for those slick moves. Uncle of Ronnie (one of the remembers) and their manager and founder. He’s also in this video speaking to them in the beginning. That man made the blueprint for the dance style in new Jack swing groups. He’s a legend.

New Edition came out around 1982 or 1983. This group hit the scene the same time as Madonna, RunDmc, Whodini, LL Cool J, Fat Boys, Deniece Williams and a whole host of great artists. Everybody around my neighborhood thought that the song "Candy Girl" was a lost hit song made by the Jackson 5. Until we saw their video. LOL!!!!
