    What i would do to transition from mice to rats are by feeding mice first, and immediately follow up by offering a rat while they are in the hunting mode. Repeat this a few times until they take a rat on its own.
    This can also be done if you want to transition from live to frozen. Feed them live first and immediately followed by a frozen thawed. It works everytime!

    I have seen your bp.net post about taxes and wondered if maybe sometime you could make a video on how you handle taxes and business vs non business breeding It may not be everyones cup of tea but Id watch that video at least a few times. Love your videos its great to see the ball python community becoming more friendly and transparent and Id say you are definitley helping move it in that direction.

    Chris this is the reason I started doing my vids! Improper care leads to BPS going off food! Sometimes it can be something as simple as to large of a enclosure, it’s very interesting. It’s critical to have everything on point or they get stressed so easy.

      Are you using it in a room with electronics? I have 2 rack systems in my man cave. But I have a lot of electronics in that room. Not sure how much humidity I can safely have without causing damage to electronics

    Hey Chris, i have a tip/trick i'd like to share, i have a few that occasionally give me trouble when feeding, what has worked for me is leaving the thawed rat right on top of them inside their hide (i have clear tubs with lids) and so far they mostly always eat when i do that. One of them is my female dream bee and i've had her since april 15th, i fed her live twice because i was worried (im still new) but after that i started with this little trick and she eats every week if i do it this way. If they are in shed i just give them the week off tho.

    After they’ve gone a long time without eating, getting them to finally take a meal is a victory in and of itself. My rescue was sold as a snake that hadn’t eaten in six months (why he was sold refusing food, I don’t know - the seller was dubious at best) - two weeks after having brought him home, he ate for me, no problem. My best guess that there was something wrong with the husbandry, because he also had a lot of stuck shed.

    And again the biggest respect to You! Today I get female normal, i dont know age, but she is 1200gramms.
    This snake have a hard destiny, woman who sold me this snake said, that this snake was droped to she's work office by unknow man :(
    She like animals and take this snake to home. But, it was a problem. Snake didnt eat frized food. She did a severel tries to feed snake, but she wodnt take a food. 2 weeks goes, snake dont take freeze food, and woman decided to sell a snake. Women was not ready to feed a snake with live food, because she a very pittyfool. And I buy It)
    When I come home, I take a thermal mat, and heat a food by it.
    Snake takes this food immedently 🤗 thank You for your tips, its really awesom, that you give your wisdom and expirience to all people. The biggest respect to You, and your expirience in snake breeding work. 🤝

    I have a wooden enclosure with sliding glass doors for my 3 year old Blue eyed Lucy I got a year ago. I'm new at this. The past couple months he's eaten like 3 times and it's been a few weeks now since he last ate. Should I get that humidifier for my room. he stayes with me in my bedroom next to my desktop.

    I fed back to back rat pups to my normal BP and he /she went off food for two weeks and started acting timid when I presented another rat. Left frozen thawed in enclosure last week to find it later eaten.
    Presented tonight after this video and.. WHAM.. ate so fast it startled me! LOL
    Snake is 260 grams and I was thinking rat “pups” are a bit small? Thoughts? I have a bunch as I ordered 50 from RodentPro online.

    Good video bud. If I recall from your past video, you feed your hatchlings live mice. I watched Mutation Creations video recently and he does rat fuzzies I believe from the get go. If this works it would be great to avoid the transition from mice to rats. What are your thoughts on this? Have you tried rat fuzzies from the beginning. Thanks!

    • @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
      @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures  4 роки тому

      I tried rat fuzzies, only three or four out of 50 hatchlings will take them. Really hard to get them to eat rats right away. Even after six or more meals it's a tough transition. I feed live mice and all 50 will eat them right off the bat.

      You are right. I just bought a ball python that is an older baby and while it’s not emaciated it is a little under weight. I’ll have to do some work to fatten him up some.

    Hey Chris! None of my males that I started pairing will eat since they began pairing. its been going on 3 months. Im not too particularly concerned (a little...)
    Its my first year. I only have 2 females, but 3 males...one of the females I have been alternate 2 of the males
    I pair em on the weekend. and give em all a week or two off and pair em again....
    Im considering trying to pair em more often...I get locks every time I pair em
    The females are eating great....
    The males I have tried:
    FT
    Pre Killed
    Live
    Live Mice
    Live scented with mice bedding
    Leaving pre-Killed over nigh..
    I actually got one male to eat 2 or 3 Mice...
    any suggestions?

      Try sewing thread tied loose around a frozen thawed rat and walk it then break it off that's how I get 1 of mine to eat

      One of the ways that i did was by feeding them live, and then after that, immediately offer them a frozen thawed while they are in the hunting mode. Do this a few times until they start to take the frozen thawed on its own.

      This is what I use for my substrate. You can get it for about $11 per block if you order it by the pallet, it's double the price if you get it shipped just a few blocks at a time through Amazon.

    So what can I do about a male ball python? I got him to eat a good size mice once then when I went to get another mice it was smaller and he didn't eat it at all but the guy said he normally eats rats so I tried a rat and he didn't eat. But I git a young female could that be the problem she's like between 300 to 500 grams could it of trigger him to want to breed even tho she's not in the tank

  • @zobi280
    @zobi280 4 роки тому

    if you aren't trying to breed is it ok to feed mice to a pet-only snake?
    When I finally get my snake I plan on feeding rats of course, but I'm just curious if its just a size thing, or a nutrition thing

    • @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
      @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures  4 роки тому +1

      I'd say it's hard to keep an adult looking healthy with just mice, just not enough food per meal. When they go on a long fast it's pretty scary if they start out really thin, I like to keep my snakes on the thicker side so a long fast is no problem at all.

    I looked through your videos. Im surprised you don't stress handwashing and moving snake to a feeding tank then back to tank. Never handle mammals before moving snakes. And a few other things so newbies don't get bite or in bad situations.

    If you buy a snake from Petco and it won’t eat, it probably never ate frozen thawed before. Give it a live rodent 🐁 and then offer it a small frozen thawed after to get it to switch over. I’m no pro, but makes sense and I seen that idea elsewhere. I’m gonna try that

    Have you ever tried to scent your rats with a mouse to get it to eat? I often times instead of letting it go another week would rub the rat with a mouse to get the scent of the mouse onto the rat. The snake always takes the rat like it had always been fed a rat.

    I’m looking to start breeding ball pythons... just 1 pair to start with. Could I keep both the male and female in a 55 gallon tank together forever basically? Even with them breeding once they get big enough? I have not bought any snakes yet just doing my research before hand.

    • @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
      @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures  4 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't do it, the snakes will go into breeding mode and go off of food pretty much continually. Although I have heard in rare cases some people actually do it.

    • @joet3682

      Am’s Sugar gliders I wouldn’t recommend it because ball pythons like their alone time lol....most snakes with the exception of garter snakes do better by themselves...also when you start adding snakes to your collection you will want to breed them to different females to vary up the genes and that female may retain a lot of her roommates sperm and not produce a greater variety of babies for future projects

    I'm starting to have second thoughts on breeding Ball Pythons... I started out with 3 females that were all in the 150 to 280 g range under a year old.... they all 3 ate f/t mice vigorously and were gaining very nicely I was feeding twice a week.... then suddenly my normal het pied... my best eater.... stopped eating .... and wont leave her water bowl. . . It's been 9 weeks now.... I was told to switch substrate to coco husk so I did ... then... my other two my spider and pinstripe stopped eating ... and it's been 3 weeks now ... I've upped the humidity... I've tried everything... live mice all sizes and f/t , and live rat pups ... they just all have zero interest in food now. Well... they have all 3 lost all the weight I had put on them... and every week they refuse food.... its stressing me out more and more.... to the point.... I'm wasting alot of food ... and my rat and mice are becoming overpopulated.... jeeez.... theres DEFINATELY NO MITES... temps are correct, yest they are in a rack system. I've watched every video you've put out... urghhh... very frustrating!
