Then they died far before MacArthur.
When he was quite old, MacArthur's 2nd wife gave birth to his first and only son: Arthur MacArthur IV.
After MacArthur got his son, he proclaimed to his brother's sons: "Your mission was to produce Arthur MacArthur IV. Since you fail, it was up to me to accomplish that! Mission accomplished!"

Manila was to be rebuilt under President Manuel Roxas to have a debt to the USA of $600 Million USD in the order of the Parity Rights. That was called the Manila Restoration Program.

If MacArthur had done his job to defend the Philippines properly in 1941, there wouldn't been a need to re-take the Philippines at great costs to the Filipinos and Americans years later. MacArthur was appointed Field Marshal of the Philippines 5 years before the Japanese invaded. He had time to know the country and train up an army. General Marshall shipped him two armored battalions consisting of 108 M3 Stuart tanks form San Francisco 3 months before the Japanese invasion. He had more tanks than the Japanese invasion force. He just didn't know how to make use of his superiority in armor. He had 35 B17s, the most advanced bombers at the time, and 107 Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters. Radar was installed at Iba Field airbase and it did give him early warning of approaching Japanese planes on the day the Japanese attacked. Pearl Harbor had also given him ample warning to expect incoming Japanese attacks. Despite all these, he still got caught and failed to lead his men to expel an inferior Japanese invasion force. Any other general would have been dismissed for incompetence but MacArthur had good connection to the US military hierarchy and got away with it.

MacArthur's speech when returning to the Philippines:
"People of the Philippines I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our forces stand again on Philippine soil - soil consecrated in the blood of our two peoples. We have come, dedicated and committed, to the task of destroying every vestige of enemy control over your daily lives, and of restoring, upon a foundation of indestructible, strength, the liberties of your people.
The hour of your redemption is here. Your patriots have demonstrated an unswerving and resolute devotion to the principles of freedom that challenges the best that is written on the pages of human history. I now call upon your supreme effort that the enemy may know from the temper of an aroused and outraged people within that he has a force there to contend with no less violent than is the force committed from without.
Rally to me. Let the indomitable spirit of Bataan and Corregidor lead on. As the lines of battle roll forward to bring you within the zone of operations, rise and strike. Strike at every favorable opportunity. For your homes and hearths, strike! For future generations of your sons and daughters, strike! In the name of your sacred dead, strike! Let no heart be faint. Let every arm be steeled. The guidance of divine God points the way. Follow in His Name to the Holy Grail of righteous victory!"

@@internetenjoyer1044 Not really. MacArthur was ordered to cross the 38th parallel by TRUMAN, DoD Secretary George Marshall, AND JCS Chairman Bradley and the other chiefs of staff. MacArthur never pushed to go above the 38th on his own because he knew securing South Korea was the main goal. MacArthur did not have any intelligence agents in Beijing or Moscow. Truman would have been livid if MacArthur had his own spies in Beijing and Moscow. MacArthur was working with intelligence provided by the Pentagon and CIA who had their spies in Beijing and Moscow but refused to tell MacArthur the full story. MacArthur was correct when he later said that the British government betrayed him and UN forces and told Mao and Stalin all of MacArthur's plans for the offensive into North Korea so they knew what to do in order to defeat UN forces. Look up the Cambridge Five/Spy Ring. Truman propagandists always try to blame everything on MacArthur instead of admitting that Truman's treasonous State Department in partnership with the Soviet-loving British government spies hurt the UN war effort and helped give bad information to MacArthur in North Korea about the Chinese troop movements and intentions.
When he saw that the Chinese killed a bunch of his soldiers and Truman banned him from bombing the Yalu bridges and Chinese bases in Manchuria...I mean, how did you expect him to react? Truman wanted him to suck it up and then take all the blame later that year for crossing the 38th when TRUMAN was the one who came up with that idea and ordered MacArthur to go into North Korea. I'm glad MacArthur didn't agree at all with the stupid idea by Truman of dying for 2.5 more years around the 38th parallel and trying to actually win the war. The real Truman Doctrine wasn't the European one but was the Asian Truman Doctrine which he began in Korea which was "lose wars and handicap your own forces from winning". That loser mentality by Truman has persisted to the present day as seen in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Also, when you think about it the Soviets had no capability to deliver nuclear weapons to the USA or even western Europe in 1950-51. Chinese didn't have nukes until 1964. The infamous ICBMs and medium range missiles that we all fear and remember from 1962 Cuba didn't come into being until 5-10 years later. MacArthur's plan to first bomb China with conventional bombs (he didn't ever call for nuking China but instead conventionally bomb Manchuria and doing a blockade of China) and only use nukes if necessary later on doesn't sound so crazy when you realize that the Soviets/Chinese had no ability at all to counter nuclear bombs.

My grandfather served under MacArthur on his return to the Philippines- grandpa’s ship was the first supply vessel to make it to Manila after it had been retaken. They came under heavy kamikaze fire and his ship torpedoed a Japanese sub. He never talked about these things until near the end of his life. He died in 2006. I still have some of his MacArthur memorabilia from the time he served.

Really fine, but I was surprised that the picture of MacArthur next to Hirohito was passed over so quickly. That pic is significant in that it essentially devalued the emperor by
showing him with another person in the same frame. Many people were surprised that he not only allowed it but did not commit suicide afterwards. A number of the Japanese contingent on the USS Missouri did commit suicide after the signing. The emperor maintained it was important for him to stay alive for his people, no matter what. That, in itself, was an almost shocking thing for him to say, given the situation. He and MacArthur actually worked extremely well together for the Japanese people.

It was because the Filipino people voted for independence, they did not want the US to run their country and I don't blame them but it is worth noting how any country that is acquired under the US's direct control will see prosperity, protection and the ability to self govern over a period of time. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur's one of my real life heroes. He was America's most brilliant strategist during World War II, and had he been given carte blanche during the Korean War, not only would Viet Nam have been averted (or at least spared being badly micromanaged), but Red China wouldn't be such an annoyance.

When given carte blanche, he got his butt kicked. He was in complete control when the war started and was almost lost, and when the Chinese pushed the UN back under the 38th parallel. He was the military commander at the top.

You missed the bit where "his" soilders (whom he had abandoned to the Japanese in Bataan) ACTUALLY freed the Phillipines were so pissed about the abandonment that they attempted to kill him during one of his press shows where he made them stand in the back because, after 2 years of zero American support, they didnt "look very good." Or what about all the men that were left abandoned north of the Yangtze river (IN China) during the Korean war who were left to find their own way back to the 49th parallel. While he was a great General, he had a habit for ignoring orders from higher ups that resulted in his men being abandoned in his awful places. I have several great uncles who (barely) survived the death march and a grandfather who was with the leading forces in China when Mcarthur was sacked, thus leaving my grandfather and his fellow soilders stranded in China. Take a note from The History Guy and dont be afraid to include ALL the details, not just the good ones.
