Thank you for posting this! I was going to teach my daughter how to play this game and completely forgot the rules. But it all came back to me now after watching it. We would play this in my childhood in Russia a lot.
“I'm so glad the video brought back those memories and helped you remember the rules. Teaching your daughter is a wonderful way to pass on the joy of durak! If you want to play online or revisit the game, check us out. I wish you both many more fun games!”
I've played a version of this game where you if you get attacked by a non trump card, you could play a card of the same rank (also not trump suit) to transfer the attack to the next person. I had also played a version where 2 jokers were used, the jokers can defeat any card (even trumps). Keep in mind that the jokers are of the same rank and would transfer/continue attacks.
That actually is the transfer rule. if the attacker gives you an 8 and you got all 3 other 8´s, then you may transfer the attack. with that, the original attacker can't any more cards and you would get an advantage but not that much since there would only be space for 2 other attack cards afterward. like that the defender wouldn't be struck by lightning. there are also people that use that rule with only one card which is wrong and destroys the fun factor of the game if everyone can just simply push the attack. also, you can not transfer if the one that defends already only has 3 cards left.
@@barriath8841the people who use just one card is actually okay, especially if the cards are low ranked, because defender will get rid of much more cards if the attack was transferred on them, and the chances at successful beating is higher. I love when people give me 4 6's to 10's close to the end of the game where much of the low ranked cards are already lying on the side, it is really just a straight up win if you have collected the trump cards, or have higher ranked cards of all 4 types
@@barriath8841But at the very end of the game this is really annoying, you have to train your brains to remember what cards were on the desk and who has what, to not get transferred by throwing trump A to the opponent that has just one card remaining and this is another A for example
i want to add that in russia we have 3 different variants of fool: default, throw-in (podkidnoy), or throw-in with shifts (podkidnoy, perevodnoy). default one doesnt allow other players not involved in the attack to add their cards for attack (old people tend to play that). throw-in variation is the one taught in this video. a shift is when you get attacked by a card and you can shift the attack by using a card of a different suit with the same rank - the next player will have to take, defend or shift again both of the cards (you get attacked with 9 of spades and u use 9 of diamonds to shift so the next player deals with both cards). variation with shifts is more common, but 2 player games usually dont have shifts. lastly, we sometimes play a full deck (and sometimes even with jokers) even when theres only 3 or 4 people. i tried playing double deck (2 full decks with jokers, which means there are 2 cards of same suit and rank) and it is hectic af.
in latvia we also sometimes pass the cards, example: player 1 is attacking player 2 with a 6 player 2 also has a 6 so he just passes the both 6 to player 3 i hope this makes sense
That's the version "Transfer" Durak because you can transfer/pass the attacking cards to the next player. The next players can do that, too. Example: P1->1x6 to P2, P2->2x6 to P3, P3->3x6 to P4, P4->4x6 to P1. There are also many variations of this version. Like everyone can attack but only up to 5 cards (not 6).

IMHO this rule much better epitomazes the cultural spirit of the game - and that is to pick one person who is a fool - usually someone who failed to make social alliances - and make him loose.
The reason why this game is fun is somewhat sinister. The rules of the game allow to team up. If 3 players team up against 1 they can easily make them lose. If game is used to determine who's going to perform some unwanted task (example cleaning toilets) it becomes much more than just card game and almost a tool of abuse - abuse overall is much more fun than just card game and is the true reason behind rise of game's popularity. Durak in Russian name means "Fool". You could say, by joke, the one who looses, will become a fool for a day. Even if the name says for itself, we play it with fun. Simple rules, and tactics are intended as well)))
This name of the game has much more deeper and somewhat sinister background. The rules of the game lend easily towards social engineering. I don't understand why do you add "acceptable attack cards" how those cards work, when they are needed? 7:22 didn't the player 4 could defend with the 7 diamond (or it's because the triumph card was disregarded)? why he dind't defend with the ases? 7:55 why didn't player 2 keep attacking? he had a Q diamond
If the defender attacks the attacker then the attacker can attack the defender but they can’t attack the attacker only the defender then the person on the right left can go and attack
Why do some of the players pass on attacking in the beginning of the round? Is it because it is best to save your trump cards until after the deck has been exhausted? I look forward to playing this game. Thanks!
In the options for describing the rules (about a hundred variations), there are also options with a double deck. Although I have never seen people actually play like that. "Double" This game is played with 2 decks of 36 cards (72 cards in total). You can fight back according to the rules of "simple", "throw" (THAT VERSION WHICH IS OWN DESCRIBED IN THE VIDEO) or "translated" fool. If a player fights back with a card that is absolutely equal in value, the possibility of throwing up from other players is blocked (this move is not considered a transfer). The player who ends up with 52 or more cards loses immediately. I just don't see the point in using a dual deck for just two players - that's a whole ton of cards to play. Playing with one deck is already becoming quite a serious and tactical game, while playing with three or four players is more just a fun game.
In North Korea, we play it with cards A-9 instead of 6-A. Ace being the highest and 9 being the lowest. It is easier to play when the cards actually shows their actual Card Rank. Like Deuces the second highest, 3's the third highest and so on... The use of Faced Cards is not essential for this game and adds graphic intrusions to our visions.
You need to redo those attack rules. only the player left and right (the attacker and the player that would be attacker after a failed defending) can play cards. The player 3 (in this case) cant attack at all and should only watch what cards were dropped and used to get a feel of the flow.
There is another rule. If you are wining and last two cards that you put on a table are sixes, it is called shoulder straps. Next round you may end with two sevens. And so on till the Aces. And a looser is now General Fool
First goes player with lowest trump suit card, trump suit card is the one, which dealer after dealing cards to players, puts flipped and puts deck on top of it , so for ex. if trump suit is hearts, then player who has lowest heart suit card goes first.
what is the difference between a defender not able to defend and not willing to defend? as a defender you could always say that you are not able to defend, because if you would say that you dont want to defend an attack you would have to accept other players adding valuable attacking cards before collecting the cards in the middle.
It doesn't matter if you can't and don't want to defend. If you say "I take the cards" then every attack can still throw cards at you to take. No attacker would throw valuable cards at you though. You can even successfully defend and then still decide to take all cards as a strategy if they're of high value.
As per rules - no difference. As per tactics - huge difference : the more you defend, the more cards are on the table, hence more opportunity for the opponents to throw even more cards at you. Consider this example : you're attacked by the 6 of hearts, you can only defend with the 8 of hearts since all your other cards are of different suit, and you know there are at least 2 eights in the hands of other players. At the same time, all other sixes are long discarded, if you just take it, you only take one card, if you choose to defend, you'll have at least 2 more eights thrown at you. As you try to beat them, you will introduce at least 1 new type of cards that your opponents can use against you, so chances are that all hell will break loose, and you will end up with a huge bunch of cards. Also, as noted by sedecim, if you are attacked with a valuable card, you just take it without wasting time and without introducing probability to be attacked with other more crappy cards that you don't need.
Yes. You absolutely can play this game with two players, and it's actually much simpler that way since you and the other player would simply be attacking each other.
Two players are kinda boring because the most intriguing part of this game is building social alliances. If 3 players team up they will always make the 4th player lose no matter the luck.
“Sounds like you've got some tough competition! 😄 But hey, even if you're still learning, Durak is all about strategy - and practice makes perfect! Glad the tips helped, and if you want to keep improving (and maybe get the upper hand over the Ukrainians 😉 ), check back with us for more games. Keep playing, you can do it!”
I used to play with a bunch of Russian kids in highschool with the added twist of deception. You can start a second attack or defend an attack with a value or suit other than than what is really needed, once another attack starts and the defender/attacker didn't notice the deception, the play stays. If they're caught the deceiver immediately picks up the cards, even if they were the attacker. We would also try to slip additional cards into play and hope it wasn't noticed, following the same rules
This perfectly epitomizes the spirit of the game about the loser being a fool. Another commonly used tactic is social engineering again a person who fails building social alliances will be at significant disadvantage.
Conversations. One of the players, well, let's say the dealer (but this is not so important) asks the others if anyone has 6 diamonds in their hands. Everyone is silent, so no one has. Then he asks if someone has 7 diamonds. Player 4 says that he has 7 diamonds, takes this card out of his hand and shows it to all other players to show that he is not lying and returns the card to his hand. So he starts, while he is absolutely not obliged to start with his first card exactly 7 diamonds, as a rule, he will want to save this trump card for later. But this is only one of the possible variations of the beginning of the game. By agreement, the player to the left of the player who deals the cards can start the game as the first attacker (this is called "out of the fool") or vice versa, the player to the right of the player who deals the cards (this is called "for the fool" - in this case the player who lost in the last game and shuffled and dealt cards for the current game to become the first defender in the current game)
I am the only one who is wondering, why Player 2 has not played ♦Q in the final, which Player 1 had to receive - and than next turn ♠10 to finish the game leaving Player 1 with 2 Cards?
Ok so in the beginning when he flipped over the ace of diamonds as the trump card, the diamond suit becomes the trump suit, meaning that it beats all other suits. So of somebody was to play a king of hearts, a 6 of diamonds would beat it because it is in the trump suit. But if a 7 of diamonds was played against a 6 of diamonds, the 7 would win because it is the highest out of the trump suit.
A trump card will be all the cards in one suit (hearts, spades, diamonds, or clubs). The trump suited cards become ranked higher than the other suited cards for the round. For example, if hearts are the trump suited cards for the round, the 9 of hearts would out rank the king of spades.
I learned that game in high school in the late 90s/early 00s. We always knew it as "Chinese Poker", have also heard it called "Big Deuce" more recently, Espeically with the rise in popularity of "Open Face Chinese Poker"
Yoooo I work or worked rather for cirque and never knew the name! The Russian guys just called it the fool game but we used to call it ‘the sheist’ hahaha 6 in russian

There are many many card games that are more similar to uno than this is. This really doesn't have much resemblance. You're basically just acting like Uno is the only card game you know where card suits and numbers either match or don't.
You have forgotten the scaming part. If every Player knows the rules well, you can scam. For example Diamonds is Trump, and you defend with hearts and noone recognizing, next round comes :D or you attack with a 6, Defender defends with a 7, you add a 9, defender dont recognize, then its his fault... Very funny
A trump card will be all the cards in one suit (hearts, spades, diamonds, or clubs). The trump suited cards become ranked higher than the other suited cards for the round. For example, if hearts are the trump suited cards for the round, the 9 of hearts would out rank the king of spades.

Yes, but remembering the cards would be very important. At the end of the game you can accurately predict what the cards your opponent has
Two players are kinda boring because the most intriguing part of this game is building social alliances. If 3 players team up they will always make the 4th player lose no matter the luck.
what if its 3 or 2 players?
What’s the trump suite called in Russian??? I forgot

please i want another video about how to play 4 card split
I have 3 Ukrainians who love this game and they want me to play all the time and I suck thanks man this helps alot
I love this game
How does one determine who has the lowest trump? Show it?
Right , that’s what i’m wondering
Yes
Slowwwww down when explaining
But how do we know who has the lowest trump card in the beginning ?
Maybe he did that to show us a case with draw
Im dumb
I still dont know what a trump card is
Ok so in the beginning when he flipped over the ace of diamonds as the trump card, the diamond suit becomes the trump suit, meaning that it beats all other suits. So of somebody was to play a king of hearts, a 6 of diamonds would beat it because it is in the trump suit. But if a 7 of diamonds was played against a 6 of diamonds, the 7 would win because it is the highest out of the trump suit.
7:36 how?
A trump card will be all the cards in one suit (hearts, spades, diamonds, or clubs). The trump suited cards become ranked higher than the other suited cards for the round. For example, if hearts are the trump suited cards for the round, the 9 of hearts would out rank the king of spades.
Is anyone here familiar with an "Attack" style game where 2's are the highest trump card and each player has only a starting hand of 13 cards?
This could be “Fight The Landlord” or “Thirteen”
@@GatherTogetherGames Thanks. I think I just figured it out - Pusoy Dos (Filipino poker)
I learned that game in high school in the late 90s/early 00s. We always knew it as "Chinese Poker", have also heard it called "Big Deuce" more recently, Espeically with the rise in popularity of "Open Face Chinese Poker"
At the start you had an 8 you could have passed it onto to player 2
Seen Khamzat Chimaev playing this during ufc press conference.
Yoooo I work or worked rather for cirque and never knew the name! The Russian guys just called it the fool game but we used to call it ‘the sheist’ hahaha 6 in russian
as a Russian person, your comment made me laugh
@@r091_rxnin5 spasiba! Glad you got a laugh out of it.
I'm pretty sure Durak means "Fool"
pro tip for this game: don't just play cards, make social aliances as that is really the key to not lose the game.
Catching Feelings
You have to roll that 'Rrrrr' 😄
I bought durak cards but i have 2 joker card how i use it ?

game uniting post-Soviet countries
how to play illuminati?
Durak is called fool in english
Thank you so much!!!
The first play, 8 of spades is considered lowest trump card- why?
because 6 and 7 are still in the deck somewhere, not in the players hands, if someone had 6 on their hands it would've been considered the lowest
Sooo hard to understand. Sooo many rules
I was taught this game as a child at daycamp by a bunch of russian jews. fun fun fun times!
welp time to play russian uno with the boys
There are many many card games that are more similar to uno than this is. This really doesn't have much resemblance. You're basically just acting like Uno is the only card game you know where card suits and numbers either match or don't.
Francis Luglio whoa there buddy i’m just tryna make a joke chill
Can't understand
there are better videos out there explaining it. It is a simple game but this video is really confusing and does a poor job explaining the game.
Very funny
because he is the durak hahaha
Zat vil vork only if zey drink lot of votka
That’s the right way u play this game bratan!
Roman von Ungern-Sternberg wtf
Yea I’ve played like that
How do u know who has the lowest trump card

@@GatherTogetherGames Ohhh ok. Thanks for replying.
"Не валяй дурака Америка.."
If this game were really that good, then Putin would not have invaded Ukraine.
