i did find the kit you talked about on Ebay $133.50 should be here today.i did contamitate the break system cleaned up but was not the problem.The threads on the crank drive where sliping.

can you tell me what causes the pawl to disengage so that you can lower the top?

My understanding is that the pawl stays engaged but the tube clamps and releases from the shaft like a clutch to allow it to slip when cranking it down. ua-cam.com/video/ZG85oIK3Pgk/v-deo.html
