Like 7 I do fishing every year its the first I ever heard or seen roach going up weirs. This is something new to know. I do a lot off sea fishing not into the rivers as much. Great video my friend 👍
Great video Alistair, it's been a long time since I saw a breeding shoal of Roach. We used to worm fish for them in my youth a couple of miles from there and the riverbed shone silver with them. It is fantastic news that the river is healthy enough to support them again. I must get onto that stretch come the spring for a bit of craic, I've never tried using the fly rod for them. Thanks for the education.
Thanks for watching Robin. It definitely came as a bit of a surprise to me to see them leaping the weir. I'll be tying a few Yellow Sallys for next year.
I started pike flyfishing around 20yrs ago and had great sport. I never caught any monsters but plenty of fish up to 10lbs. Unfortunately, over the years the catches dropped off to the point where I just don't bother any more. Give it a throw and let me know how you get on.
Hello Alex, thanks for watching. Yes, as far as I know the club has given up their stretch on the Bann. I was told this by two separate anglers then I asked a Gilford club committee member who confirmed it.
@@AlistairCampbell1047cc That's crazy. Just shows the interest people have in the river. I had heard the same thing but wasn't confident on which stretches were prohibited. I think the stretch at the pot belly is considered private now, the back field at Tullylish in the domain which used to be used for the game fair is probably the same because of the pheasants. The stretch from the Silver bridge to Knock bridge "Moyallon" can be brilliant. I would say to anyone though now that the club has given it up be really mindful that farmers could run a bull in the fields they tended not to a few years ago.
Late comment but i used to fish this spot fairly regularly and always done well, but recently noticed a big gate and fence have went up with barbed wire preventing people going down. Last season anyway. Disappointing.
Yeah, I noticed that myself one day when I was cycling past. Obviously the farmer doesn't want anyone in the field any more. Apparently Gilford angling club have given up the fishing rights on the river and that was probably the only reason that access to the land was given in the first place. There's bound to be a gap in the hedge somewhere! Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@AlistairCampbell1047cc yeah spokr to them about it, estate stopped them fishing their land or something and gave it up after that. Still plenty of other decent spots but that one was handy and have had the odd salmon from it from time to time.
Good man Alistair Keep them coming !!
Thanks Gordon.

Joe, there was nobody more surprised than me! I agree, it's good to see more fish life in the river. I'll definitely give it a throw this year again.
Excellent video, didn't know that roach came so far up. The mayfly your were seeing are 'yellow Sally's'.

Good video. Any pike fishing on the Bann? Like to fly fish for them

Hi is any sort of license or permit needed to fish on the bann in Gilford?
No permit required David, just a rod licence game/coarse depending on what you're after.
Is the rumour true that the Gilford club give their stretch of the river up?
