Bennis raw pull is still my favorite deadlift of all time. No suit, no straps, no hitching, holds the bar at the top and sets it down like a baby. Nobody has ever come close to repeating what he did that day.
It’s my favourite too.
I agree man that was the most beautiful pull I have ever seen
I knew his deadlift would be here. It amazed me the first time I saw it and it still amazes me now.
It’s such a beautiful lift. My fav as well. Just perfect
Literally get chills everytime I watch Benni's raw pull.
The deadlift of that bald guy at the end was impressive. You should try and get him on for an interview!
He’s a prick

@@BigLozOfficial I have it on good authority that he is a top bloke.
Beast mode! I wouldn't go too close ;-)
Man seeing Thors 501 makes me even more annoyed about that silly boxing match. I’d rather see Thor going for 520 kg deadlift and do what he does best instead of that boxing match
Yep me not a fan of seeing two mature men with families punching each other. Seems childish to me.
@Gore4ever FulciLives ive heard it was 7 0's
I guess money talks. Too bad there's not more money in strongman... instead, we get to see Hafthor vs Hasbeen to see who is slightly less shit at boxing.
Wrecka Stow if Eddie is has been what are you. Shouldn’t belittle gods makes you only a hater they are both gods of strength compared to us and good job them for turning wsm into a money making franchise in everything they do. I hope we get them competing in any and every chance so they can continue to build their empire and inspire young people to dream and push them selves no matter the cost.
@@canoalbert8194 "gods" Lol. These idiots like eddie that you worship are self absorbed man babies who would sell their own mother for a dollar. I admire them about as much as a massive turd in the toilet.
About time someone explained this to the world, and no better than Big Loz. When I was in the military we had a saying " If you can't grip it, you don't lift it." I love the Strongman, but I lived powerlifting. Each one has it's place and I respect them both. Thank you sir for all that you do.
I used to think like that but honestly, if I would have stuck to that philosophy, my short fingers and shit grip would have held me back massively 😂
@@getstrongby4038 thats me too, i have short stubby fingers. using straps made my numbers go through the roof.
I don't think grip should be the limiting factor on how much you can lift in a movement that uses so many large muscle groups at the same time. I like powerlifting and use the hook grip to take as much of my grip out of the movement as I can. I train and test my grip in other ways.
@@matrixkeeran haha the only problem is, we all have to find a way if we ever want to compete. I don't know how I'm going to get over that one 😂
@@waynecanova6030 I agree completely. The deadlift will test/train muscle groups in the body. Sadly people do have smaller hands or not the best grip and that should not be a limited factor of what someone’s personal best. Someone was to tell me their PB and they used straps, I would still congratulate them. I am old school powerlifter and I have deep respect for both. The reason we would say, “If you can't grip it, you don't lift it.” is because if you are in the front line and need to lift something off the ground in harsh conditions, we can’t depend on straps. Train hard, train safe and best of luck. :)
Loz pulling 435 looking like a beast! Laurence, my favorite thing about watching you compete over the years is the rush and exuberance after you had a good event. Thanks for the enjoyment you've given us fans.
Benni Magnussons 460 Raw is as of today's date the greatest deadlift of all time.
Facts
I heard a rumour that he wanted to go higher but the bar couldn’t hold it or smtn like that
@@dantethunderstone2118 certanly looked like he had more in the tank..
@@RenaxTM91 based on what 460 looked like I don’t think he would have gotten the number I heard he wanted but definitely like 5-10 more kgs
A man whos not imo getting enough credit is a guy i recently found like a year ago andy bolton he did a 457 deadlift also without straps and now hes in hes 50s i think and he just did a 360 raw deadlift after hes had tons of health issues from what i understand but the man is a animal but i agree bennis lift is insane... edit sry didnt see uncle loz mentioned him
One of my favorite deadlifts - Ronnie Coleman lifting 800 pounds, shouting "light weight baby"
YEAH BUDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NY 2 YEHA BUDDY!!!!!
Ain't nothing but a peanut!
Really puts into context the kind of a monster Benni was in his prime, to be able to smash world records in both powerlifting and strongman style deadlift. BTW that 1015 raw pull is still standing to this day, probably the single most impressive lift I've ever seen, with Ray Williams' 490kg squat as a close second.
Also you can't make a list of greatest deadlifts without mentioning Konstantin Konstantinovs best pull: that absolute unit of a man pulled 426kg without a fucking belt, way more impressive that his 430 with a belt
I just got a tshirt with him deadlifting on it.
He definitely could've done 475 or 480. It was like an RPE 8 pull
I was hoping you would put your own DL as the best and you did :)
Zydrunas's tire deadlift as has been mentioned was amazing, but to me his deadlift at the wsm 2011 is so inspiring. such a grinder, one of the first and only times we saw Z really use all of his power and go for it. on a wet platform in the rain, no less. a champion's lift (even though he didn't win that year)
The look you had on your face uncle when you destroyed that weight was absolutely priceless and it describes the joy you were experiencing
Much love
I think I remember hearing that the day benni pulled 460 raw he asked for 480 to be put on the bar but they didn't have enough weight
Didn't know that and it definately adds to the legend / mystique of his performance that day ! He absolutely looked like he had more in him, 20kg more ? Sadly never know :(
Easy 20kg more. The speed that went up. Benni can also hold on and grind out very well when he has to
Magnusson’s pull was like he was late for an appointment. That was crazy impressive.
All Strongmen can be powerlifters, but powerlifters can't be Strongmen. -Broscience
In powerlifting there’s also the federations that require stiff bars instead of deadlift bars, which makes a huge difference as well
Michael Bernete-Diaz that's a good idea
My god this has got to be the best video that plainly states the difference between the two, instead of how most people clump them together.
Another great video!! Thank you Loz for the detailed breakdown of each sport. 🙏
This UA-cam channel is now my new favourite. Great content Loz. 👍👍
Whoa, big Loz looking absolutely jacked pulling that last DL!
Love watching old LOZ lifts, seeing his passion gets me HYPED
You mean young Loz?
Great explanations of the various types of deadlifting, and great compilation of legendary lifts!
Awesome video big Loz ! Your motivational videos are making me want to try a strongman contest !
Benni's has to be everyone's favourite, its iconic now. That last fella was a handsome devil tho, wonder where he ended up......
I heard he went into crossfit.
Excellent vid, Loz!!
Really helpful! Thanks Loz!
That was incredibly informative and unbiased. Well done mate 👏👏👏💪🙏
Thanks for explaining this so clearly- I've been wondering about this very question for awhile now.
As a professional couchpotato i found this video really well made and interesting 👍 I will probably never lift a bar with any sort of weight on it. But your bideo made me far better at judging the effort put in by these lifters and the differences in their sports. Really well done!
Thank you 😊
Eddie 500 was the crazies deadlift I ever saw it just crushed the WR by so much.
Yeah, Thor's 501 was a bit of a pisstake tbh. That's like playing poker and raising by a penny. Obviously there's bad blood between the two and it is more frustrating to get beaten by 1kg in very much home conditions, so it very much looks like Thor wanted to deprive Eddie rather than set his own record.
My favorite lifts
1) Magnusson 460. Insane. 460 kilos in the hands and the way he lifts this weight and how it put it down. It’s not human. He is a bear.
2) Konstantinov at 426. No belt, no strap for 125 kilos bodyweight.
3) Hall 463. No belt (no T-shirt neither haha) but straps.
Why don’t I put the 500 kilos lifts there ? Because I have a problem. I can understand the straps. I can understand the belt. But I can’t understand the suit.
Showing the core (belt) and grip (straps) is of course impressive (that’s why I put KK here) but they don’t lift the weight. But when you use the suit you have something to help you lifting the bar. And with that I can’t look at the 500 and feel that it’s the same. I mean if strongmen only use that I could understand but come on Eddy !! You lifted 463 without belt without suit and then you use both of them for the 500. I could understand the belt and I would put it in the top 3. But with the suit I feel like something is missing.
Logan Vervicos I think that’s the point, that it’s not the same. My fav is Benni’s 460 too btw :)
Eddie, with straps and a suit, has been the first human to experience a 500kg deadlift. Now it’s just a matter of time before the grip strength catches up to the CNS, then we’ll see the powerlifting go to 500kg+... hopefully in our lifetime.
True but deadlift suit still isn't that horrible. I cringe when I see suited bench tho.
I heard for years that a deadlift suit actually doesn't help that much it's probably mentally but i can see a squat suit or bench shirt help
@@makaan699 yea suited bench is insanely stupid
deadlift suit doesnt add to much. bench and squat suits do all the work
"I love LOZ but he should include himself at least once, after all he hold the Strongman WR at one point...Oh there he is!"
;) I did some decent stuff once
@@BigLozOfficial you look great with a clean shave too brother. Bring it back!!
@@BigLozOfficial quite amazing how strong you were with really that much bulk. Around 2014. How did you get over the lat pull Loz? And what does it feel like?
@@BigLozOfficial You did some great stuff, your farmer walk carry is one of the best i´ve ever seen
That 435kg lift at the end looked easy for him. I'm sure he could have done more that day. Awesome strongman he is !
Fantastic video as always Loz!
Brilliant video loz really well made smashing job 👍
Love that you have your lift as the best of all time Loz!
And some of Kazmaiers lifts I’d have to put on the list as well, both in strongman and in powerlifting
(Hard to say what my favorite of his lifts were, but the one where he lifted it twice one right after the other just to prove how good he was...and maybe a bit of an FU to Wilhelm ;)...that one is definitely one of his best
Really great video Uncle Loz
I really hope you keep these videos coming as you have been hitting these out of the park!
That was great thank you, nice explanations for people who may think a deadlift is a deadlift is a deadlift. Nice to see you gave yourself some credit too. My favourite Lamar Gant, first person to lift over 5 times his body weight. Try the math for Eddie and Thor. Thanks again.
Great video, as always, Loz. Thank you for posting it. Tons of impartial info on the tech of both lifts.
I agree that you have to consider these two completely different events, and the elite at either should be respected. At these levels and weights, the slightest alteration in style, form, rules, etc can completely throw a lifter off so I think that explains the difficulty most have transitioning from one to the other.
As with most competitive sports, it seems like there will always be those who vehemently defend and support their sport's events as the "best" but, in my humble and unasked for opinion, the true strength fan/athlete can get behind any event and appreciate all the effort and dedication that goes into being at the top.
Even within Powerlifting itself, you have di-hard camps of Raw vs equipped, tested vs untested etc. Same applies... the training and tech that goes into a raw squat, as an example, is much different than an equipped squat. You can't compare the records and you shouldn't. Each record holder is the best at their chosen event class.
It's been a while since I've paid attention to PL equipment... in the beginning of DL suits they really didn't give much (at least in comparison to squat suits and bench shirts). I'm guessing that's changed? Just curious.
Anyway, thanks again Loz. This video is staying in my watchlist so if anyone ever asks, I can refer them to it. I've never seen it explained better.
This is quality Loz! .. Think this will help so many people branching into either sport.
Love the objective, straight clean data here. New sub. And i agree 100 %
Loving the show. Different format than Eddie and Brian. Terrific information. Please keep it up. Respect.
Sorry I didn't recognise the guy at the end. 😂

I was introduced to you watching Thor's 501 deadlift and glad I found you. Keep up the good videos!
Great content. Love this channel
Thank you
Thank you for breaking down the differences between the two sports in regards to the deadlift. I've been getting more serious about competing as a powerlifter (I do sumo) and I had no idea how my style would not be allowed in strongman. I like your video content and I have subscribed :)
Great video Loz.
thanks big Loz no one's ever explained it this well
Great subject, really good for new fans and casuals coming in to the sport
Big loz is the strength scholar. A class on everything strength!
thanks for the education Big Loz
much love uncle loz. legend.
I really like the hype for Eddies deadlift record that he set in Australia, when Arnold came out and was cheering him on. I forget the weight but the story and the moment make for an awesome lift!
Great video. Thanks.
I find raw more intriguing. Seems more legit. Really don't like the deadlift suit. Just doesn't seem as impressive to me
Thor pulled 410 not 420 in his PL meet I believe. He went 390 410 and failed 430.
Big Loz! You’re deadlift at the end was such a smooth pull! Damn man, that was nice.
Thanks mate. Best my deadlift has ever felt. Unfortunately I tore my lat going for 446kg after and my deadlift never got back to that level
Big Loz Official I never expected to actually get a response from you yourself. That’s pretty cool. That must’ve been frustrating to tear the lat while pursuing a new PR. My first comp is in August, but I’ll only be pulling 485 lbs, so a little less than 435 kg haha!
@@mrjehbaldwin how did that competition go?
Another great video Loz 💪🏻My top 5 favourite deadlifts would be:
1. Eddie Hall 500kg - Made the impossible possible and I was in the crowd so I'm a little biased haha
2. Thor 501kg - Probably the greatest deadlifter of all time imo
3. Thor 474kg Elephant bar DL - went up like a speed rep, which is extremely impressive considering Eddie really had to grind to get 465kg on the same equipment
4. Benni's 460kg Raw - First and only man to deadlift 1000lbs+ Raw
5. Jerry Pritchett 465kg at Europe's 2016 - Came in as an underdog and made 465kg look easy despite not wearing a suit, unlike everyone else
Thanks for the explanation
A fantastic, unbiased take. Great video!
Hi Loz,
Absolutely loved the video! Brilliant explanation about the differences between deadlifting in strongman and powerlifting. My favourite 2 deadlifts are Eddie's and Thor's. Loz, you look totally different in that video of you doing 435 Kg to now (i.e. without the beard).
Thank you for making the video.
Cheers,
Billy
Yeah, I've never completed a pull and thought "Man, that would've been easier if I hitched." If I do get a bit of a hitch, it was because I rushed the rep. All it really gives the athletes in strongman is the leeway to be inefficient.
And that Kieliszkowski pull at the Arnold this year was pretty crazy when he managed to hitch some extra whip into the bar and saw through his strap. I would've kept the strap as a souvenir.
Joel also happens because the bar gets stuck on the legs
Great idea for a video. I looked this up myself just couple weeks ago
Some valid points between the two types of deadlift competitions. But my opinion with why strongmen have progressed so greatly with the weight being lifted more than most Powerlifters is because most of strongman movements concentrate on static lifting with a higher hip position like yoke carriers, farmers walk, etc allowing the body to get used to pulling massive weights in similar positions. Whilst powerlifting primarily supplementary training for building of the hip muscles is the squat, which is below parallel. My opinion is if the top strongmen decided to train the deadlift powerlifting style they will develop the grip strength and take all the deadlift records from powerlifters, because they've already built the huge base for lifting massive weights in the higher hip position.
Well...have learned a lot today..
Thank you👏👏👏
Thank you for explaining the differences. Can you do similar videos explaining strongman lifts from a competitors (lifters) point of view. Your insight into the sport and ability to explain the details are informative and entertaining as a fan. Thanks. A new subscriber.
That Benni lift is amazing! He even had the strength to set the bar back down under full control! Wow...
Killing it Loz, killing it!!! 👏🏼💪🏼👏🏼
To me Benni's 1015 raw DL will be the best lift of all time until something else crazy happens (maybe a 520+ strongman DL or something). The way Benni just stood up with that weight and gently set it down shows that he had so much more in the tank as well, to this day I wonder what he could have hit at a completely max effort that day
Your 435 was real smooth
Your 9999kg deadlift its more impresive
Love youre line, "uncle Loz explains it all". Lol. Your explanation was clear and easy to understand. Loz you're the nice and likeable uncle off strongman. My favorite lifts are yours, Eddie's, Benny's and Hafthor's. Stay safe and healthy and god bless.
Very informative
Tom martin has hit 410kg in a deadlift only comp raw at less than 110 bw. One of my favourite lifts for sure. I think he would hit a massive deadlift with a little more bw and a suit
I'm glad that you put a logical and easy to understand explanation to this long running debate-- although everyone will have their own opinion and favourite-- I personally like in Bennies raw lift camp...
My favourite deadlift of all time is probably Big Z pulling 1150 (or something like that) on hummer tire
Partially because it looks the most impressive imo
Great video, Loz. You're right. Powerlifting and strongman deadlifts are very different. One thing that you didn't mention was that in strongman, you can roll the bar to give it some momentum before lifting. But in most powerlifting federations - not all - the rules state clearly that the bar must not move before it breaks off the platform.
This makes strongman deadlifting "easier" - for certain values of the word - than the equivalent powerlifting version.
That must NOT be interpreted to mean that one type of deadlift is "better" than the other. It just means that we aren't comparing like-for-like.
As someone who does powerlifting for fitness and fun, I will simply say that fans of iron sports can and should appreciate each type on its own merits.
Your 435kg was crazy smooth! Glad you included it
What about big Z at the arnolds with the hummer deadlift. I think you defenetly was top 5 in the world for (strongman) deadlift for max from 2010-2015 together with Z, Brian, Terry and Lalas/Eddie. Loving the UA-cam content keep up the great work 👍👍

KK pulling 426/939 Raw without a belt at BW 140/308 is the most amazing feat of strength I've ever seen to this day..
Of recent memory I'd say Benni's raw lift stands out, amazing. Personal favorite though would have to be from 1972. Franco Columbo 's raw lift of 700lbs for 3 reps weighing only 185lbs (and he wasn't even wearing a belt). That's crazy.
1st Benni 460kg raw, 2nd Bolton 455kg in a full meet, 3rd Eddie Hall 500kg.
Really good video, I won't go down the whole Sumo thing lol But tbh deadlifts needed explaining, and you've nailed it there. Plus, how many people smile when holding 435kg lol
Fun fact: Bennie was actually going to pull 488 kg (his lifts are based off the cubic inch displacements of old Hemi V8 engines), he'd done a 455 kg warm-up but the bar was too short for the weights totalling 488 kg so he had to settle for 460.4 kg.
He also pulled 260 kg for 22 reps after his world record lift.
Thanks for the education, Loz! I know powerlifting can be confusing as I hear the rules differ between organizations.
George Leeman has to be tied with Benni as my favorite big deadlifters. I dont thing Georgie ever pulled 1000lbs but his high belted pulls are amazing.
Great video again. As big as the numbers are Benni's raw powerlifting record is the most impressive I've seen. Agree that they can't really be compared too closely.

Great clarification. I always hate hearing people criticize the Strongmen for cheating because they're not following a different sport's guidelines. Strongmen lifting originated in practical strength competitions. Powerlifting was a refinement of these original competitions into a very defined sport. People need to realize that throughout the history of Powerlifting there has been many refinements made. Used to be more lifts, such as overhead press and curls. Now there is a division between Raw and Assisted. So the sport continues to change. I personally love Strongman's and Highland Games' continuation of a great heritage of practical strength. I also love powerlifting and Olympic Lifting. They are all unique strength sports.
Although I personally find it most interesting watching the superheavies do their thing, there aren't many lifts that impress me as much as Lamar Gant's 300kg @ 60kg b/w. First man to lift 5x his bodyweight IIRC. Absolutely insane lift!
I agree on your newest video about the different straps You win due to having used the old types of straps
