Todays interview with Prof. Mahinderpal Singh on the base of #GurdevSinghKaunke who was born in 1949 in #village #KaunkeKalan in #Jagraon sub-division of #Ludhiana district. His father's name was Gurdial Singh and mother's name was Chand Kaur. His grandfather Jathedar Tota Singh was a companion of Baba Nand Singh of Nanaksar. He took Amrit at a young age and after studying 6 classes, he joined #DamdamiTaksal .
#SarbatKhalsa was convened at #AkalTakht on January 26, 1986, in which Jasbir Singh Rode was appointed #Jathedar of Akal Takht. Rode was in #jail at the time of his appointment, so Kaunke was appointed as the Karjakari Jathedar.
On April 29, 1986, the Panthic Committee called a press conference at the #GoldenTemple and announced the independent #Punjabi #Sikh homeland Khalistan. Immediately after this, all the members of the Panthic Committee left the place. The #police surrounded the premises of the Golden Temple and arrested Jathedar Kaunke.
Since Jathedar Kaunke was in custody, Gurbachan Singh Manochahal and after him Professor Darshan Singh continued to serve as the acting Jathedar.
A police team led by Inspector Gurmeet Singh arrested him on December 25, 1992 from his house in Kaunke Kalan. On December 28, his wife found that he had been transferred from Sadar Police Station, Jagraon to #CIA Interrogation Center, Jagraon. When his wife reached there with food for him, he was in no condition to eat due to torture. This fact was confirmed by a person who escaped from there on December 30 and also by a doctor who had seen him in custody.
On December 31, his wife Gurmail Kaur was informed that Kaunke had been taken away from the CIA interrogation center. He has not been traced since then. The police claimed that he had escaped from police custody on January 2, 1993.
In May 1997, a committee called the Committee for Coordination of Disappearances in Punjab (CCDP) after conducting an #investigation found that Jathedar Kaunke was tortured first at the Sadar Jagraon police station and then at the CIA #interrogation center in Jagraon from December 25, 1992 to January 1, 1993. They also found that evidence indicated that he was tortured to death.
