Love the name of your vessel, that's the name of the first colonist ship that got shipwreck on Bermuda reefs bringing its first settlers.

Wow! I watch all of the refit videos and enjoyed it all. Glad that you two are proud of how the refit came out. You have a unique boat with the paravane and the crow's nest. You should be making some really great videos from the crow's nest. I look forward to watching those videos.

Fantastic results on the refit. I’m so excited for you two. Hey, you don’t have to justify your refit costs, homeowners spend that kind of money every 10-20 years to update their kitchens, bathrooms, additions, etc. Can’t wait to boat vicariously with you two. I’ll be glad to be your bartender. Where is Trooper?

      Thanks for watching and commenting.
No need to worry - just really busy trying to get ready to leave for our summer trip. It seemed in order to have time to work on the video we needed to leave Everett and go to an anchorage somewhere.
We will do our best to keep up as close to real time as possible throughout the summer.
If you want, you can track Sea Venture's current location in real time.
If you go to www.vesselfinder.com you can search using our MMSI number, which is 366711270. You can also search by name, but there are a lot of Sea Ventures in the world! There is a place in the upper left corner of the map where you can enter the MMSI number. This will show you on a map our current location.

      John,
Sure we can. I believe the paravane fish are in some earlier refit videos. In the next video we will make a point to show more detail about lowering the poles and the fish, and explaining what they do underway that stabilizes the boat. In the meantime, if you email me at CruisingSeaVenture@gmail.com and I email you back a picture of the paravane fish.

I have really enjoyed this refit series. The paravane installation was quite an undertaking and very interesting to see the process. The added benefit is the additional height you have gained for your aerials and antennae and you must have seen better system performance from them - has it reduced ‘clutter’ in the radar on ‘near range’? I think you made a good decision to run the cabling external to structure as this will render most benefit for future installation/defect repair. The only caveat to that is the UV rating of your cables and potential deterioration.
It will be interesting to hear your operating experience of the paravanes in terms of roll reduction and in fact when it not worth deploying ( say roll angles less than +/- 5 deg).
Enjoy the fruits of your labour.👍

Fabulous, very happy for you guys, should stabilize some of those seas and keep you smooth. Question, what prompted your decision to do the poles ~vs~ fin stabilizers on the hull?
Really looking forward to seeing more of your journeys, & wishing you happy seas before you!!

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  6 років тому +2

This is a great question, and one that we will answer at the end of the next cruising video in detail.
      The short version -
      Our initial goals were:
      1) To maximize stabilization
      2) To have a system that worked good at all speeds and all sea conditions
      3) To have a system that works at anchor
      4) To have a system that we can or is, if needed, easily serviced and repaired
Paravanes are the only system that meets all 4 of these goals.
Fins are excellent but have some limitations. For us, those were,
      1) As a boat goes slower, under 8 knots, fins become less effective. Since we cruise at 7 knots, this was a factor
      2) Because they rely on water flow passing the fins for effectiveness, their effectiveness is reduced in following seas
      3) They do nothing at anchor
      4) They are fairly complicated to repair if needed.
      5) They slow the boat 100% of the time, whether being used or not
Also, on Sea Venture, our hull is the outside of the fuel and water tanks. As a result, the available space for fins is very small and some significant hull modification would have been required.
Of course, "deploying" consisting of flipping a switch would be the big upside of fins.
We think we made the best decision for us, but we suppose time will tell!
      Thanks for watching and commenting,

Just finished all your refit and engine room/fuel videos. Subscribed after the first one. A sailor turned RV'er now thinking about a possible trawler in the not to distant future... gathering info. Will continue to watch you two on your adventures. Wonder how it would be offshore with a shallow bottom boat like a trawler in heavy seas and high winds. I guess the paravane would work better than a stabilizer system, but the forces must be tremondus on a boat that size and weight. Like the fact that you have that kind of range. What is your bridge clearance now?
Pretty cool you give your your costs. Fully appreciate that. Fair winds. (yeah I know you guys like no winds but that just not the sailor in me!!)

Of course, the entire structure was added to add the paravane stabilizers. (The video you watched is the 8th in a series on the refit). The entire structure added about 1,300 lbs. About 400 lbs was removed (the old mast and boom). The impact of the increased weight was very carefully analyzed as part of the entire design process to ensure Sea Venture remained well with the required stability for ocean going power boats. Thanks, Jim

Very nice job on the rigging. How big a set of paravanes did you install and how much speed did you lose when they are deployed? I'm sure they will give a great ride during those lumpy conditions. Enjoy you trip to Alaska. We hope to the same next year so will follow along to get some ideas on stops of interest and must-see's.

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  6 років тому +1

      Joe,
      Thanks for watching and commenting.
Our "fish"are 38 lbs each. They are made of marine plywood, with a stainless steel fin and 1/2 of a 50lb downrigger ball attached to the front underside. We can go up a size if we choose, but wanted to keep the weight manageable to ensure we could retrieve them without too much strain.
In calm water we loose about 3/4 of a knot. But I think in rougher conditions we loose less. I think when we are rolling over 20 degrees we are loosing speed over ground due to the rolling and the impact it has on the trust from the propellers. As a result, when the seas are rougher I'm not sure we will loose much speed. In talking with other boaters with paravanes they also seem to think in rough conditions the loss of speed from the paravanes is offset by the speed gained from not rolling.
I hope this answers your question.
      Jim

      Gary,
We’re cruising right now and I just have a few minutes of Internet coverage but I wanted to give you a quick reply and then I can reply in more detail later.
I think it all depends on what your cruising plans are. If you want an ocean going, literally go around the world, powerboat I think you’ll be in the $600,000-$3 million range. Certainly the significant refit we did is not necessary unless you plan to do Ocean crossings.
Sea Venture really did not need the big refit, we just wanted to be more comfortable. The prior owners cruised 60,000 nautical miles without stabilization but we sure are enjoying it now.
So in the end, I think it just depends on what your cruising plans are. Most cruisers plan to do coastal cruising. There are a lot of great boats available for coastal cruising that do not need major refits.
      Thanks for watching and commenting,
      Jim

      Lars,
      Good eye!
Traditionally you fly the vessels country of registration from the stern, where our American flag is.
Traditionally on a boat from the port side you fly the country flag when in that country. When we are in Canada we will fly the Canadian on the port side.
On the starboard side you can fly the flag of the nationality of the crew. Rosy and her family are from Germany, thus the German flag. You can also fly other flags on this side. The second flag we have flying is a pirate flag.
      Hope this answers your question.

Hey Jim, I planning on doing quite a bit of solo coastal cruising. I've been just starting to think about a provisioning sheet for my trawler. I want to store lots of food on board because I plan on spending most of my time at anchor and not in marinas. Also, provisioning is a bit of a hardship for me as believe it or not, I"m a disabled sailor. So my plan is to place an order for the food with a grocery that delievers so I just have to worry about putting it away once it's all on board. I was thinking your provisioning list might be a good starting point for me. I plan on doing the Great Loop and cruising the east coast from Maine to the Bahamas. My email address is sailingwithbill@msn.com thanks!
