August 19th, 2018 -- For my 116th outing of this year, I took one of my MOST DESPISED lures out there for a walk: the KastMaster Spoon!
I encourage everyone to watch this video from beginning to end, so that you folks can see exactly how I "figured out" the lure. I made sure to add each cast in the footage, so you also know where I cast and what depth I was fishing.
The message of this video is clear: we all have those lures that we ABSOLUTELY despise! ...And there is really no easy route to "figure them out" and be successful with them. Thus, ultimately, make sure to get out of your comfort zone and keep trying! Never give up!

I encourage you all to read the description of the video before watching it. Do you folks have a lure that you *ABSOLUTELY DESPISE?!* If so, which one?! Comment below!
I despise deep diving crankbaits never liked em.
Micro tube jigs!! While I have landed maybe a handful of fish on them, I just can ALWAYS do better on something else and never do well on them. I've done well on Kastmasters, just the other day I got a common shiner on a kastmaster.
It’s always been the little storm swimbaits
Top water lures, never caught none
Poppers I can't seem to catch anything on them T.T
*sees title*
*instantly thinks about crankbaits*
Yo what's up mai gai
Crankbaits are Bae
Nah , spoons r
Nah, gulp minnows r
dude who likes dinosuars your right about that one
The spoon is used for Salmon here on the west coast and it works really good
Use spoons all the time for steelhead, salmon and browns on Lake Michigan tribs where I live. Works like a charm.
Very cool Congratulations, beautiful video.
Have a good week!
Hugs and good fishing.
If Leo doesn't post tomorrow we know he got ligma from the bass.
How is this meme not dead yet haha
Henry Meyer Garvey because it was created by Sawcon
Sawcon this dick
Either that or he went to saw con
The legendary turtle8524 search it up😭💀
The legendary turtle8524 LIGMA BALLS BIIIIIIIIIICCCCCHHHHHH
We have been using those lures for years. They work well for trout and bass. Deeper is better and "jigging" it works quite well. Let it sink, jig it up and let it flutter back down.
I enjoyed this video very much....it's nice to see you change it up and I loved seeing you fight the bigger fish....pure adrenaline Leo!!
And I have been lucky enough to have caught fish on all the lures I own.. Don't have any I would say I despise but definitely have a few favorites. Warden's Rooster tails in hot pink, rainbow trout, and white, trout magnet jigs in red and chartreuse, soft plastic crawfish imitations.. There's a long list. Tight lines Leo
Love your channel and attitude! We need more Anglers like you!
Good video with a great point Leo! I'm gunna look for my old trusty dusty spoon tomorrow, and fish it for a while.
When I retrieve my spoons, I tend to but my rod down by my side and have it parallel to the water. Great job leo keep up the great work!
Leo your videos are awesome lately. Finishing summer strong.
Good for you! Getting out and conquering the spoon. Thanks for another great video.
Jared is very talented...awesome he sent you the drawing!
Great video and great concept for a video! Crankbaits are the lures that give me fits.
Regarding spoons, a loop knot does help the action but I have always fished Kastmasters and Hopkins spoons with a split ring at the top and a clip on that. I think that makes for even better action. I also recommend a swivel where your leader connects to your main line (assuming you are using a leader) to avoid line twist.
Finally, I like swapping out the treble hook for a single. You still get plenty of hook ups and you avoid the troubles that come with a treble hook (snags!).
In salt water try a Kastmaster or Hopkins with a single hook with a white bucktail on it. That slays.
Ligma is taking over these fish almost as fast as Sugma did in 2008
I believe that was a rare disease. A bass with it is called a sugondese bass.
I love the Kastmasters, every year I take a trip up near you, Kinzua PA ,for rainbows, browns, and Brookie's. They all love the Kastmaster!
I’ve used that exact castmaster (one in the intro) in creeks to catch smallies/trout a lot. Really like it for covering ground when I’m trying out a new spot
Hard baits is lures that I despise, but I love the kastmaster, I have caught panfish, trout , bass, and a 5 lb bonito tuna on a big kastmaster.
Hey Leo, great message in the video. If I can give you a bit of a tip mate. Tie feathers or strands on the treble. Use a bit of glue too. Gives the lure a bit of a flick action. Tight lines bro.
I'm glad you finally caught a fish on the spoon. Great place man and I love the covered bridge on the background. I use to go fishing in Brazil with my father, and I'm just getting into fishing again. Thank you for the nice videos.
Nice work Leo! You can always tell when you are doing well. Your voice goes higher and higher!
Great video Leo and congrats on conquering the KastMaster, just today I finally overcome my hate for jigs. Caught a 5.3lb bass on a bitsy big finesse jig on 6lb test BFS rig.
Hey... Leo? As a disease scientist, there’s a fine difference between ligma and sugma. He has sugma, judging by the fact that the largemouth bass originates from the island of sugandese, where they were fed only updog by their masters, which had the name of upsexy.
booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Lol, at least he didn’t have a chance of catching fugma😂
Leo I met you yesterday in China town thanks for stopping to say hello that was awesome!
For albies and bones you'll want a high speed reel. May I suggest the spartan loaded with 15lb braid and flourocarbon leader.
I would try if bought before comes out of the water do a small Figure 8 or move it around in a small circle that's usually how I catch my trout and other Predator fish that's how I've learned with spoons
awesome video haha i have a love and hate relationship with the rapala XD it has the most sophisticated swim action but wenever i use it, i usually lose them to snags. spoons or spinners they are easy to use but problem with them is that they must be in a constant speed in order to make the most of them. might try out softbait from here on haha
hey leo a lil tip if ur ever snagged pull and walk to the side and back the other way and if still snagged let up on the pressre and if non that works then fingers cross u dont break off ur lure good luck on future snaggs
Leo, try a split ring or a snap for your line attachment to the Kastmaster next time too. It'll keep the spoon from cutting your line and keep your presentation smaller. Kastmasters also do well with a feather treble, single siwash/mosquito/trout worm hook, or my personal favorite way to rig them, that doesn't come straight out of the box, is a Kastmaster with a mosquito hook rigged 6" or so behind the spoon on a mono/copoly/fluoro leader. For extra flare on a tough bite, tip the trailing hook with a 1" Gulp Minnow or other small plastic minnow.
For me, my "despised" lure is the jerk bait. I have quite a variety of patterns and sizes, I've fished them at every opportunity, but I've never caught a darn thing on one.
good to see you out fishing love your work !! keep it up !!!
Leo picked the best picture of mike at the start
Leo, that spoon you are using is a very very old style. It was sold up here in Canada over sixty years ago under the name Deadly Dick after the man who created it, Dick Nite. They came in sizes up to 6" long. We used them in the ocean as jigs. They actually work well if you are jigging vertically, we caught a lot of Cod on them
Probably a catfish. Love to use castmasters.. some of the bigger fish seem to prefer them. I like that spot there at the base of th e dam caught a few there back in the early early spring. Nice video...
Time to see some Philly fishing baitcasting!
Way to conquer your bugaboo, Leo! 🎉Those km’s slay snapper blues in tidal areas. Never caught anything on them in regular freshwater areas.
Can't believe it's been 2 years since I've been subscribed to this channel!!!
That lure for me is a jig. My buddy kills bass with a jig all the time but it never works for me. We will be using the same jig, hes killing it and im skunked lol
You have to have a lot of patience to work a jig properly. The correct retrieve is ussaly very slow with pauses in between and a irregular twitch with the rod tip. If you are used to fishing constant retrieve lures than you're going to have to learn to switch things up for the jig. But the jig is awesome I ussaly use one when the fishing is slower and the trout will only take slower retrieves. The best lure for trout on a spining rod in my area is a 1/16th ounce jig head with a 3inch Berkley gulp minnow in the natural silver color. Throw it slightly up stream and real the line tight as it drifts down stream giving it a twitch pause retrieve. Once its completly down stream continue to twitch real a tiny bit and pause for longer. Often I get my best trout once it drifts my line tight down stream and against the bank where large trout often hide and strike at any smaller minnow or trout.
The jig doesn't work for you because you dont have ..... faith ..... in it , lure confidence is a huge part of fishing , I used to not believe in jigs , but I forced myself to use them and now they are my go to bait , but I will say I prefer the smallest jig I can find 1/4 ounce and smaller .
Wow had to be a biggen dang drug you for sure. Nice to see you go back to a lure that didnt work. Makes me want to try all the ones that didnt work for me. Thanks for this vid my friend.
"got some ligma on the side"
yes, i've been waiting since spring for this spoon video. :D I love spoons so it's surprising to see that you despise them. I guess what you said at the beginning is true everyone has that one lure special to one person that they hate.
Bro this is one of the only lures that works for me 😂😂😂 it works well for trout I just caught a 19 inch brown trout on it!!! As well as hundreds of others! Also love the challenge. ✊🏻
Caught some nice ones on the spoon, glad you figured it out haha now maybe I can figure it out.. great video 👊🏻
that spill way is snag city, im glad your doing more videos at the covered bridge park!
I’ve done very well trout fishing with a kastmaster.
The kastmaster spoon is one of my go to lures
Kastmaster spoon? This is 100% my favorite lure!!!
Only this sentence gives me life *WHAT'S UP YOOUTUUUBE*
I have a hate/love relationship with kastmasters. They are usually the last lure I used if I’m about to skunk, and if I do skunk, I take my frustration on that darn ugly spoon.
Rare sighting of 1rod1reel in this video, that’s probably the last time we will hear about him in a loooooooonnnng time.
Good video man always fun watching rhe videos
As always -- awesome video, Leo! I was in that exact spot last month with 4-lb line and had that same fish on, and had the same result :( I think from the way it stayed low and ran, it was a Catfish. Tight Lines!!
Plz tell us how you decide where on the creek, river etc you decide to fish. Do you cast upstream, downstream, or cross stream? Ty
Awesome video Leo!
Also another good check with spoons is to real slower than you think you should
Giant tip for you brotha is to point the rod tip as low as possible when jigging this lure or your just pulling it only 4 to 5 inches under when you want it just above the lake/river bottom
Leo if you ever go fishing around the Chesapeake bay let me know i can show you the spots
Hey Leo recently came across your channel and enjoying it very much. Glad you lost your Kastmaster "virginity". It's a great lure I've used them in fresh water, surf fishing as well as local and offshore salt water here in southern California 1/8 to 4 oz. models for to many years to admit.
2 things from you to chew on
1. Noticed the 2nd lure you tied on did not have a split ring to tie to. The addition of one will help the action of the lure.
2. First time I've seen that particular knot you used. You could try a 3 or 4 turn uni knot but don't tighten all the way. Just enough so the split ring can spin inside the loop. I use this for fishing surface iron to add that little extra acation.
Sorry this went on so long
Tight lines and good times
Chuck
Leo speaks the truth!!
Jigs. Of course they work, i just can't get them to work in rivers without losing it in 3 casts
Saw the notification and immediately clicked. Love the videos Leo!
Nice vid as always. Inspired me to finally start using senkos, which I know are good but i have zero confidence in. Thanks Leo
Nice fishing! The only thing I have ever caught on cast masters was snapper blues. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try them on freshwater fish. I do have other types of spoons that I do use in freshwater, and catch fish on. Even some that I have made myself out of spoon handles, scrap metal, and brass spinner blades. If you are really into kastmaster style spoons, and end up losing them easily, you can find Chinese copies for really cheap on ebay. 10 spoons for $5.29 and $1.44 shipping. I've never used these Chinese copies before as I don't have any yet,but they are shaped the same,so they should run the same. I do have a number of other tiny cheap Chinese spoons I've ordered weeks ago, various lots, shapes, and colors, and they are quality spoons. I've caught bass, bluegill, and yellow perch on them. One lot of them I have is 50 spoon blanks for $6.99 or $7.99 free shipping. They come in 2 styles,in brass, and nickle finish. You just have to add split rings and a hook. I've fitted most the lots of spoons into a small compact box, that 12 of the spoons came in,and I keep that full box in my tackle bag.
Great video as always leo i caught my first LMB on one of those
I did the exact same thing Leo, I fished a castmaster strictly cause nothing else was hitting. I would end up catching a new pb walleye and caught 6 nice size walleye the whole day😄
How do you hate spoons? I've caught bluefish, all kinds of trout, a salmon, sunnies, and perch on them. One of my favorite lures.
Awesome message and a great video, I really enjoyed this one a lot.
Hey What's Up Leo!!! Keep up the great videos...great vid!!
Sup Leo love your videos and I took your advice 4 my UA-cam channel thx 4 everything man I love your content dude keep up the hard work
Mine is the molix soft body Nato I have not cought a fish on it yet but I think it's the colors
I live in Minnesota and the Kastmaster is one of my favorite lures for ice fishing.
What is lygma
Lygma balls
What did you do differently with the kastmaster today?
Hey Leo I remember a saltwater video where you caught a fish (i believe it was a small barracuda) on a small spoon, I thought it was a kastmaster. But I could very well be wrong.
Switch to fireline 6-8 pound .. , it might have been a carp
Yeah, that's what I thought, a snagged carp
Hi, man !
My regards !
So I think you put the hook up side down on the first spoon, well... the heaviest part would be down, it works better anyway as to cast as the presentation. Maybe would you find it out...
Congrats leo....
I did that ones with a chatter bait and broke my pole with it still have no idea how 😂
Way to go! For me it's a bait that really bugs me. It's Power Bait for trout. Went trout fishing for the first time this year on two occasions I couldn't get a single trout. I couldn't convince my nephew to go out for trout a third time. I won't be giving up though. I will go out for the fall stocking of the East Branch of the Brandywine in October!
Try using the floating gulp small hook that's light enough to let the bait float.i fish it Texas rig with a 12 to 16 inch floor carbon leader.
The senko was my most hated lure that everyone thought was amazing didnt use it for almost 2 years decided to put one on and I've caught a hell of alot of fish. Needless to say happy I tried
Leo: "I never catch anything on the Kastmaster, ever. I hate it"
Kastmaster: "Hold my beer"
Kastmasters are good in the salt when peanut bunker are around. Good profile imitation.
i like to keep a kastmaster in my tackle box.I don't catch an insane amount of fish on them but they work decently in a lot of different conditions. I've even caught a couple of channel cats on them.
I normally have better luck with silver spoons during overcast weather. Gold ones seem to do better on sunny days
Bonito and Spanish mackerel, I like the sound of that!
The best intro on UA-cam
You should try grubb lake in lancaster
That castmaster is best for salmon and mostly for saltwater fish, caught some Kokanee(i think thats how you spell it) salmon in Wisconsin but color blue and sliver on it
Hey Leo, I love your videos, keep it up. I saw a video of yours though before where you caught a barracuda down in Florida on a Kastmaster? I looked back to make sure and you did. So you must have caught at least one fish before on a Kastmaster before?
Love your videos man if you ever get the chance to make it down to West Virginia is love to take you to some of my favorite streams and ponds
Beautiful scenery Leo and mines the reef runner
What a video gotten try this myself EPF can’t wait to the next video
I guess i am using a frog tomorrow lol
Those kastmaster work for about everything even ice fishing for panfish jigging them through the ice try using them in the spring for stock trout they work good for them
How is the kastmaster your most hated lure? I have caught a 3 lb 15 oz tiger trout, and this past spring a 4 lb 4 oz brook trout and plenty of other smaller trout. It is my favorite trout lure. If you do want to catch some fish on it, go to spring lake in spring lake New Jersey in April and use it for trout
That bigger bite could have been a pickerel or trout too. I've caught both of those on Kastmasters before.
take a shot everytime leo says the word "kastmaster"
Great video, great message Leo!
EAZYYYYYY!!! Love the videos bro, keep it coming!
The spoon to love you Leo
Dude u need to just hourse the fish in on my ultra light I caught a 5 pound catfish on very fraid line it has 4 pound test and it has never failed me 4 pound line is strong enough to bring fish in easy. Great video keep itup.
I know u have gone here but it’s still so crazy right across from my house!!
