  • On this episode of Angie Martinez IRL, Angie sits down with the talented singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, and future EGOT winner, Teyana Taylor. Fresh off the NYC premiere of her latest film, A Thousand And One, Teyana reflects on the pivotal moments in her career and personal life that shaped her into the woman she is today. Despite experiencing highs like the VMA’s, Sundance, and multi-platinum records, Teyana felt like she never reached any of the finish lines she was striving for. She eventually learned that the weight she once thought was punishment was actually preparation for her true big successes. Look at God.
Teyana also opens up about her relationship with God, a constant lighthouse throughout her journey. She emphasizes the importance of daily communication with the big man upstairs and the power of prayer.
Their chat about the abandonment issues she faced in her life and career causes Teyana to dig deep into her emotions, a side of her we don’t often see. Teyaana shares her experiences working with icons like Pharrell and Kanye West, with poise, grace, and honesty. She reminds us that in life, we have to be willing to accept the apologies we may never receive.
Join us for a therapeutic conversation with Teyana Taylor she shares her journey of defeating demons and finding success on her own terms.

As a Christian influencer, I literally LOVED to finally hear someone with a huge platform talk about a REAL, AUTHENTIC relationship with God. Not just the hot morning tea, reading the bible at 5am. Sometimes its praying and asking not to SPAZZ out! LOVED this transparency!

Teyana is so vulnerable in this interview. From speaking on her career, her feelings regarding Pharrell, her spirituality…and how’s she’s viewed herself internally even concerning her physical appearance…WOW, she opened up! This was an iconic interview, in my opinion. Bravo Angie, for truly giving Teyana a safe space to express herself.

I think it’s sad that she is wanting to express her disappointment and true feelings regarding how Kanye and Pharrell mishandled her career, but she had to continuously give them their flowers and almost tip toe around HER feelings. She knows how things can be misconstrued and potentially ruin her career and stunt potential business ventures. It’s a such dirty industry! I’m so glad Teyana was able to have this conversation in a safe spice with another genuine woman. I wish nothing less than happiness, good health, and success for Teyana!!

I also believe that she realized that if they didn’t mishandle her career, she wouldn’t be where she is right now. How she was handled is the reason why she’s so strong and is able to defeat her demons. Sometimes we have to thank people for leaving us because it will often strengthen our relationship with God. God is good and I am happy to hear her talk a spiritual talk about God. Thank you Mrs. Taylor also for speaking on a woman with a deep voice. I had to go the same thing about ppl telling me how my voice sounds and hearing other young ladies voices being soft. Angie is the Oprah of the hiphop radio space and I adore her sensitivity to our guest. It was so beautiful seeing TT lay out the layers of herself and not just the shine of that Harlem bravado. Two things; 1. They stop her in the industry so much bc Teyana is so multi-talented & brilliant that she can take EVERYBODY’s job. 2. I believe God has allowed the blocks in order for her to exist in every part of the entertainment industry & conquer.

We speak of God but we must remember who He is...which is clear in the Bible. God gave Teyana those gifts. They were to be used to glorify Him. To whom much is given much is required. For those of us in that situation, God allows those blocks because yes, the talent gets you seen, but you won't stay there unless God is being glorified. That's why she's been stopped so much. She's not just a puppet artist. She knows of God and comes from that type of family. God expects her to be sold out for Him. He indeed loves her, but her path will be choppy if she doesn't pour all that talent for Him.

I am a middle aged pasty woman from Iowa who cried when TT announced her retirement. Teyana Taylor…..you are so incredibly talented. I have no doubt that if you would have had the support during your music career…….you would have been just as big as anyone. You have universal/genre crossing appeal. The music industry really messed a huge check not giving the media support they should have. After seeing you in the fade video I kept an eye out for anything you did(TT alerts on all platforms). The emotion, longing, and pain I can hear in your music is incredibly moving. Plus the acting, directing, dancing, designing……..the list goes on. Thank you for never giving up. Thank you for continuing to entertain. I never make comments but this is one of the best interviews I have seen in a minute. I loved how Teyana discussed the mindset between "being defeated" and "sharpening your mind to defeat". That is so powerful. Not only that Teyana has been relevant for years for so many different accolades but what stands out most is that she seems like a dynamic, genuine, and God-fearing individual. We don't see that a lot in the industry. I pray Teyana sees how powerful her impact is now and in the years to come! This interview motivated me so much. Thank you TT for staying true to yourself

I’m happy to see Teyana let that out. Sometimes we really don’t know how much we just need to let things out and how much that’ll shift our mental and spiritual well-being. Being vulnerable isn’t easy and no one should feel the need to always have to wear a cape. Happy that Angie was the safe space to release that. We are all here supporting and ready to continue to watch Teyana evolve 🖤

This interview was so refreshing to watch. Teyana is not just one of the most talented and gifted mainstream entertainers of our generation but she is an authentic, gracious, vulnerable, lover of God that upholds a degree of integrity and work ethic that is often times absent. She personifies ascending where your character can sustain you. Truly a gem. ❤

I've been a huge supporter since VII. Always post about her on social media, every time she drops. Went to her concert. I always felt like Kanye had way too big of a platform not to promote her. It wouldn't even take much but the fact that he didn't make any effort said a lot about him. ALL of her albums have been top tier in my opinion and she's always stayed true to r&b even when it wasn't popular

When Beyonce thanked God for "Protecting Her" during her most recent Grammy speech, she was acknowledging her privilege. She was protected by her father and then her husband Jay Z. Teyana is talking about the need to feel safe, supported, and protected in this music industry ( and in life). As women, we look for that in Men... with a father being the first representation of this. She alludes to having "Daddy Issues" and was looking for her " Dad " in these men that signed her. I think she realizes that God had never left or forsaken her. It is He who will protect her and will continue to give her the desires of her heart in his timing. Additionally, God sends protection in different packages too... Beyonce, who is a female, gave Teyana the wisdom that she needed to keep going as well. Beautiful, honest, and vulnerable interview. I am so proud of her. ( Angie was awesome as usual.)

I saw Teyanna Taylor preform pregnant alongside Chris Brown at a concert in Dallas,TX and she gave it her all. I’ve also watched her grow up. She’s the poster child for a talented artist that was misguided, mismanaged, and used. She’s realizing where she was failed. She’s still young. She’ll have a strong finish because the discipline is there.
