- In this episode of the Black Rifle Coffee Podcast, we are honored to host Navy SEAL Drago Dzieran. A Polish immigrant who made America his cherished home, Drago unravels the tumultuous time in Poland when dissent against the communist and socialist regime reached its zenith. He vividly describes the sweeping arrests that engulfed Poland in a single night and details his transformation from a brave activist to a prisoner of conscience.

But Drago's journey did not end there. He delves into his harrowing yet hopeful transition from Poland to the heart of America. Facing insurmountable adversities in his homeland, from frequent abductions to grueling interrogations by government agents, his indomitable spirit sought refuge in the land of opportunity and freedom. He warmly recalls his time in a German refugee center, his aspiration for sunnier horizons, and his fondness for Elvis Presley's Memphis, Tennessee. With merely a bag of clothes and unparalleled grit, Drago embarked on a new life in the US. This included becoming a skilled Mercedes mechanic, a skydiving instructor, and eventually, against all odds, a decorated US Navy SEAL.
Highlighting the intervention of Pope John Paul II and his influential role in Poland, Drago offers viewers a profound first-hand perspective of life under socialism and the immeasurable sacrifices individuals made in pursuit of truth and freedom.
Plus, reflections on the Global War on Terror and why war requires MONSTERS.
This isn't merely a coffee talk. It's a tale of resilience, the essence of the human spirit, and an unyielding quest for freedom.

34:04 -- oh yeah, that is exactly what would happen, Communism insures everyone lies all the time.
'terrorist terrorizer" - funny. But I still hate the fact that we're giving them a tiny milimeter of equal standing. I think this is where people get confuzed and why a lot of guys come out messed up. I understand what he's trying to say, but not everyone will get it. To most people it will sound like you guys are giving them a little bit of equal standing with American troops. That's the problem. And that's why they keep popping up. Bc in their minds it's *almost* an equal fight, so why would they not keep trying to fight. Does that make sense?
It's not just about winning in the moment. It's about winning overall. And, no, I don't think ''hearts and minds" was ever going to work bc it's waaaay too hippy-dippy and because the people in charge of that strategy were completely confused. That was a loosing strategy almost from the beginning bc it is waaaayyy too vague. I do think maybe there have to be new strategies considered, bc so far, I cannot say anyone really hit the nail on the head with any this stuff.
You guys are either purely reactionary and in the moment: they terrorize me, i'm gonna terrorize them. *OR* You're totally disconnected from reality: I am going to win the hearts and minds of a culture I don't get and don't really like and which no one is really interested in actually sticking around for, bc we need to go back in 6 months bc deployment is over.
Neither ''strategy" reality works for a decisive victory. To me that means there's room for improvement. It's been that way for many years and nothing has really shifted so to me that REALLY means there's room for improvement so you can get a better result. Bc so far, both strategies rely on you guys adapting what you're doing based on how your enemy is attacking you. In sports this is called: letting the opponent dictate the pace and run their game. That is when you're typically loosing, bc you're constantly on the back foot.
Please don't get offended bc I am saying there's room for improvement. To me, anytime you're not actually engaged in the game, we used to always discuss ''room for improvement" scenarios. So bc the US has taken a step back a little bit lately with the new administration and trying to wind down operations, this is typically when we'd be talking about areas of improvement. Bc this whole war of terror thing started bc they attacked the US, and there is no guarantee that this will not happen again in the future. So it's worthwhile to discuss or think about.
And the above comment in NO WAY means, implies, or suggests that we should all just be nicer to terrorists and have podcasts with co-host who realy want to support their financing means of fundraising bc they ''say they're sorry now" or "they flipped a switch and they're reformed now", or any other version of this garbage...... That is a NO-NO! 🤬 And everyone who does that is on the sh*t list. Y'all know who you are >_
I am actually against doctors cutting people's arms off as adults too, yeah! lol. it's funny but also scary. The dividing line should be clear, that medicine and surgery is meant to restore full biological function, not DEPRIVE people of biological functions. This has always been the case. It's not new. No you don't have the freedom to commit malpractice, basically. Freedom doesn;t mean freedom from reality or consequences. It doesn't work that way, and again, it quickly turns into a malpractice issue. And it needs to be that way, bc otherwise we degrade the sciences into nothing mora than butchery. I do hope the doctors doing this now, do end up in prison, bc they are aware that they're doing harm, they're just exploiting the loopholes in the regulations. They're exploiting bad laws to still do this crap. At the very least their licences should be revoked and they need to be sued. Because the physical damage they're doing to people is permanent. They are removing healthy organs and body parts. That IS malpractice.
The story of the poor underwater welding student who wound up in buds is fucking amazing
10th times I listened to this. I listened to this episode on my drive to the base. There were a lot of things he said that had me tears. I am an immigrant myself and now 17 years in the military. America changed my life. I owe a lot to America and it is sad hearing American born citizens who hated America. If only they had a chance to learn it the hard way. They would feel blessed knowing they grew up in America.
The problem is America is destroying itself so fast, Americans will get to experience a 3rd world country from. The comfort of the homeless shelter in their own home town.
I don't personally know any American born citizen who has spent real time in another country and also hates America. I know some who have vacationed elsewhere that don't have a true appreciation for the US, but that's because they were simply tourists elsewhere.
It is a great country but it also has great big problems
@@PostNutClarity102 It's biggest problem being the ignorance and willful malaise of its own populace.
Or if they even understood the history of mankind. Talk about winning the genetic and historical lottery to be born in this amazing nation at this amazing time.
I wish all Americans had a heart like Drago. What a great American!
Most of us do
Agreed
Half Polish 😊
@@hasiok87raul36 Cool, Raul.
@@RavenousMarmotyou are delusional lol
80% of our country are mindless drones.. look around
Proud he was born in my country - Poland. Great American, and Polish oppositionist in the communist era.
Dudes a SPECIMEN for a 63 year old.
The underwater welding guy just made me crack up. Holy shit 😄
Drago is exactly the kind of American we desperately need.
Im sad this was so short. At the end of the video it really starts to show how funny this guy Drago is too 😂
Not American exactly
Yeah...more people who weren't born in the country.
@@yew2oob954tf is that supposed to mean? He's a law abiding, USA defending citizen, and he has been for probably longer than you've been alive.. So piss off with the anti-immigrant crap, unless you're a native, and in that case, consider yourself a vanquished nation.
@@przykurcz100% American.
Greetings from Poland 💪🇵🇱🏆🇺🇲
My family is from next door, Lithuania, and my grandpa was a political prisoner in a Soviet gulag. My parents came to the US as political refugees in January 1986. Stories like Drago’s aren’t isolated. Many of our families suffered behind the Iron Curtain. Great episode!
I swear my longtime girlfriends parents have told us sooo many similar stories of the desperation & going without basic necessities forcing ingenuity all around. Those skinny Kielbaska & potent homemade Shan is one of my favorite snacks, good miseria is awesome and I’ll easily devour Hungarian pancakes. The red barscz from the little tub is my go to quick snack when idk what I want lol.
Would like to get u know better ..do u have WhatsApp
And now you will suffer again. USA isnt what you think or what it used to be.
We gave the Americans Kosciuszko, Pulawski and Drago.
Americans gave us Captain Merian Caldwell Cooper,Edward Corsi, Elliot Chess,Cedrick Fauntleroy and Edmund Pike Graves.
Glory to the all American pilots who defended Poland in 1920.
We like you Poles out this way. Dragos an American now though haha
Bylo wielu innych, np. plk. Matt Urbanowicz.
Ole buddy showing up for Buds thinking he was about to experience underwater welding training was GD hilarious! My sides hurt I was crying laughing so damn hard. WOW
We Poles have freedom in our hearts💪. that's why the USA is close to us🤝. We fought together in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now we stand on one side against new threats. You can count on us. Russian propaganda presents us as brawling Catholics, but the truth is that they shake their asses in front of us. Best regards, Evan. Great podcast. Pozdrowienia Drago, świetna robota. Dziękuję że walczyłeś za Naszą wolność poświęcając 2 lata swojego młodego życia.
I love my Polish friends and brothers. They have ALWAYS been right about russia, even when I was mistakenly giving them (russia) the benefit of the doubt. I won't make that mistake again. Not ever.
I was born in communist Romania. My parents were anti communist dissidents. Eventually we had to escape, which we did. We defected to the West in the early 80's.
I created a foundation called Survivors of Socialism Foundation.
Search Substack for "SOS Foundation". Then there search for an article called:
How Communism Never Truly Ended in Russia and Likely Never Will
A study in how communism ended in Romania and how it never did in Russia. What lessons can be learned?
I love this man. A true American. I'm thankful for his service and sacrifices.
Drago reminds me why my ancestors, and everyone else came to America. It's up to EACH one of us to uphold this freedom and individual rights we've taken for granted for so long. If we forget this, we will lose it in the blink of an eye
FREEDOM can be lost overnight. It's begun.
This was an incredible podcast. What a human being Drago is. We need more like him here.
Thank you, I hope Drago’s story reaches further across America, because the stories of communist Poland are sounding very familiar
Fraudulent elections, political persecution, political prisoners, show trials,
Pretty right in our faces I'd say.
Hell, you even hear college kids and politicians talking about "democratic socialism". Absolutely terrifying.
Yup, Sounded just like how America is today.
Soviet Poland was nothing like America is today. I have it on very good authority from multiple ppl 1st hand who actually lived it before immigrating here. We don’t have grocery stores with 3am bread lines cuz they’d be totally empty within an hour. We don’t want for any commodities, we have refrigeration & high quality accessible albeit expensive medical care. We mostly don’t have to farm our own food if we choose not to. We don’t have to smuggle in black market items normally purchased easily in the developed world. Nobody can dictate what our livelihoods will be, the government doesn’t disappear common citizens for simply disagreeing with the official narrative. We have plenty of jobs & opportunities for improvement. We’re cursed with an abundance of riches but often fail to appreciate that. The Polish traditionally set an extra plate at the dinner table especially on holidays for the potential hungry traveller passing by which embodies their generosity unlike us where ppl selfishly step over other ppl in the street without a 2nd thought.
Russia was not a Soviet Union either until it was and it took less than a decade to turn it over. The US might not be a communist country yet, but more and more communist/socialist-like laws, politicians and influences are out there year by year, so he is right that those stories sound very familiar. There was no such thing as 'Soviet Poland' - it wasn't an official part of the USSR. The country was called Polish People's Republic and yes, the living conditions were in fact terrible and incomparable to those in the US.
Sounds like someone who has no idea what living under communism is like.
Excellent episode. Drago - jesteś wielki. Jeżeli będziesz w okolicach Chicago, chętnie postawie ci browara albo i 10.
I totally agree with this Man's viewpoint. He has the most down to Earth and compassionate interpretation of this crazy world that we live in that I have ever heard articulated. Listen well, people! I have a dream... 🇬🇧
The handshake at the end was awesome haha! Drago looks like he's got a devon laratt grip. Also the underwater welding story was just the best lol
Pozdrawiam i szanuje człowiek godny podziwu
Drago!!! Wieeeelki Szacuuuun !!!
What a great American. I was up on Drago long time ago. We need a million Drago's in the United States right now.
This man could parallel park a train!!
Drago’s account on life under socialism is eye opening and telling when one considers the direction the US is headed today
Pieknie pan mówi o naszych bohaterach. Pozdrawiam serdecznie.
Now in my home in Poland im drinking Freedom Fuel coffe which I bought near Little Creak few weeks ago. I feel real connection with this episode.
That’s awesome dude!! I’ve been blessed to have my girlfriends family straight from Poland welcome & treat me as their own. I even was lucky enough to visit Poland for a wedding in 2015 & meet her extended family - all I can say is ppl park on the sidewalks cuz streets are barely wider than a Soviet tank & idk if I’ve ever been more drunk after drinkin shots of home made jet fuel wodka & berry preserves with grandma who still lives on the farm that looks like something out of Grimm’s fairytales.
@@esk8er900similar experience but also did you try their dumplings? it was amazing
The underwater welder story needa to be a seconday plot line in the next seal movie or tv show. Imagine 12 episodes of this poor dude and his auffering just to get the underwater welding training.😂
But he's gonna be one DAMN good welder though, isn't he? LOL
Drago is the man! So much respect and love for that man! Loved his episode on Jocko's channel. It's really sad though he knows what it means to be a free American more than most of the people born here.
I regretted every Pollack joke I used on my Army A-Gunner Czajka when I heard Draco’s story
Nahhhh. Many still hold true! Lol. From one mixed breed to most likely another, you're good! 👍
I think Drago broke my finger with that handshake.
What a great “American”. Salute to you Drago. From one who served to another, thank you for your service o7
wow, what a man, what a life!!.
"All we knew is that this is the country where people are free."
Spoken so simply, almost casually, and these were the words that motivated Drago and so many others, including parts of my own family, to uproot their lives and take a giant leap into the unknown. We who were born in the US can't really conceive it. This is why we must see/hear/read/listen to people like Drago when they tell us about their lives and why they chose to strike out into the vast unknown that is, for them, America.
I met a member of the Polish Royal family he was thrown out of his country 3 times !! First by the communists then the Nazis fighter pilot in ww2 led then led the victory flypast of Warsaw then thrown out by the communists when Drago escaped. What a Man you would never have imagined standing next to him !! A lost Generation 😳😳😳
Thank you , Drago , for your break down on socialism .
He had such an awesome mom, collecting the pillows so her little Drago could listen to the radio. What a wonderful lady. 🇺🇲
You need to bring him back for Part 2, great guy
One of the best podcasts with Evan, damn Drago is one hell of a man and American!!
One of the best pod casts here.
We need him to go talk to our elected officials. This man could teach them what it means to be an American! God bless you, and thank you for your service.
When do we learn to weld? I haven’t laughed so hard in forever.
GD hilarious! Can you imagine being another recruit standing by watching this play out. I would have lost my sh#t 🤣
Drago - a Pole and an American in one body :-) For me - a national hero, imprisoned by communists, which did not break this man, but only strengthened his hatred towards communists. Amazing man.
What happened in Poland is happening right now in Brazil. It is heartbreaking to hear the past being repeated in my beautiful country. Excellent podcast, made me cry so many times.
Its happening in Poland again as well, current gov is the same ppl, same methods.
@@Mtrix3345 You are delusional.
@maxalbon9557
How? Poland election was just stolen with foreign internet ballots. Now Poland will destroy itself with migration and welfare just like the rest of the EU. Only Hungary will survive it appears
@@Mtrix3345 u are wrong, I remember a little bit polish comunism, now is much better. U know I was sure that PiS will cheat during election, but no they didn't... it is only one good thing what PiS did last times, they didn't cheat during election and this way probably we will have new government. Generally nothing big will change because polish politicians no metter what political party have similar - socialist views, but them propagand in tvp was craze.
Get Drago on again. Best guest to date, amazing podcast.
Drago is always funny!! He said with his thick accent, "The funny thing about these foreigners coming through our courses.." Lol!! Love it!!
Great man!!!! Pozdrawiam serdecznie ze słonecznej Hiszpanii!!
Ive been hearing stories about Drago on this and other podcasts, so happy to finally hear his story. Its super impactful this man is a legend. His story really makes me appreciate being born in America that much more. When he was talking about toppling statues and rewriting history all that I could think about is the last few years of chaos in this country.
He has 2 episodes with jocko
@@justjsse8917 watching one of them now actually, I never realized that picture of Jocko re enlisting another seal was Drago.
Absolutely. We often take soo much for granted, complaining about 1st world problems (aka minor inconveniences) but most of us really don’t know what true desperation & hardship looks like. Explains why my longtime girlfriends parents are so eccentric about certain things like having bags of potato’s & carrots in the “Garagerator” where soup is also usually kept in the winter cuz both fridges & the deep freezer are stuffed to the brim with breads, meats, cheeses, fruits, coldcuts & jams. They never been to Starbucks but have a $2k digital espresso machine to make their own cuz they busted their asses working/saving for that luxury. They’ve got very strong values & priorities as I’ve learned thru countless meals & holidays celebrated with her family of 3 who’ve so warmly welcomed me with open arms. I’m just still trying to think up good Christmas dinner wishes for breaking & sharing the host bread lol.
Evan one of the most interesting interviews I’ve seen in a long time. Drago is a great guy, I had heard his name before but never knew anything about him. He looked like he was about to rip your hand off when he shook it at the end.
Guys like Drago, Okimoto, Benevitez ,Kim coming from different heritage we are all Americans and brothers 🇺🇸
Thank you Drago for sharing your story. I am praud. You are responsible for distroy socialism in Poland. 💪💪💪
Awesome dude he's got it right hell yeah America!!! Thank God for all the vets where all a cog in the machine ❤my sisters and brothers
Talk about a refugee success story. Drago close to defines what that means. I'm not even American, but Drago has the most positive attitude. It blows my mind, and makes me realise what I take for granted. Bless this man.
"Violence always works." THAT'S A TEE BRC!!!!!!!!!! And add the rest, "if violence doesn't work, you didn't apply enough violence " AWESOME QUOTE
Everyone should hear this story!
Man, he's a tough ol boy.
This is one of the best podcasts I've ever listen to. Thank you Evan. And thank you Drago I've never felt so thankful or so lucky to be an american.
Everyone needs to listen this podcast. Great job!!!
If you want more, look for Jocko Willink interview with Drago.
Joking aside, why are you feeling lucky in such a context? Your country together with the seals invaded few countries over the world just to get richer. I don't really think it's a good reason to be proud of.
What an incredible American and inspiration of citizenry.
The Polish usually have that same scrappy ingenuity & determination to overcome challenges as the good Americans from all over who built this country, defend it & keep it running. Maybe I’m biased by growing up so close to my Polish girlfriends family but I’m proud of how far they’ve come in such a short time. It’s funny I have no problem understanding through his accent whatsoever or recounting of the Soviet days because it’s all too familiar to what I’ve been told by other Poles who survived thru all that.
"...I am not a hero, I am a monster "

A man like Drago inspires me. Appreciate your service 🎉
The legend himself
As the son of Czech political prisoners who escaped and let me grow up in the West and someone that has been lucky enough to work in Poland after the fall of communism ( and had the fortune to advise across CEE in transforming the former communist economies ) I can say that there is more work to do (corruption born of socialist morals exists) but change has happened.. But more importantly, the world needs more Dragos!
Drago makes me appreciate being an American.j
On our worst days, and we are in some bad days, we are still better than any other country in the world.
Love Draco👍
It’s crazy how he explains socialism and then looking at how our government is running the country it feels like we are getting pushed down that route and that’s scary. This man is a true hero.
It’s nice of you to host such a lovely podcast on behalf of BRC CEO Andy Stumpf. God bless you sir, doin the Lord’s work.
Long live Drago.
Drago's the best🐸🇺🇸
Love Drago and his story, thank u for sharing another reason America is the greatest country on earth,Drago is America
Stud! Ironically my last girlfriend is Polish-they are hard people🤙🏼
This perfectly explains why many older Polish immigrants still aren’t very comfortable participating in politics let alone even voting. It also explains collecting unusually large amounts of things they couldn’t imagine having at all back in the day. Some of the stories of adversity I’ve heard from the ppl who lived thru it are almost unbelievable & make me appreciate my good fortune as an American.
TRUE POLISH SPIRIT...
GOD BLESSINGS. I TRULY THANK YOU
First heard him on Jocko a few years ago and was blown away..you can hear past the accent the honor and respect he holds true..more American than Biden

This man is the quintessential curious resilient intelligent Polish immigrant. Gotta love how he thought the window air conditioner was a fridge & was so enamored by our supermarkets he quickly got addicted to American breakfast cereals lol.
Thank you, guys for doing this podcast. I'm hoping a lot of Americans will be able to watch this and learn from it. I lived under a dictatorship for 20 years. I don't want a repeat of that here in America. I don't want to live under tyranny again.
