I want USB type C charging on ham radios.

- I just bought a new radio. Frustrated that I have to use a special cable to charge it, when everything else around me uses USB type C.
Is there hope on the horizon? Maybe.

I suspect it isn’t just lazy manufacturers. It is also legacy radios in the hands of older hams, which are a huge part of the demographic. The Chinese manufactures aren’t as burdened with a legacy customer bases, though even they sometimes do weird nerfing of ham versions of their radios.
Hams need to be telling manufactures to up their game.
💯. I won't be buying another HT without USBC.
While they are adding USB-C how about including some decent programming software and a cable so we don't have to pay the $50 RT-Sytems tax on every radio purchase.
They should just expose the programming interface as a USB UART and have a programming menu that can be used with any serial terminal program.
Not that RT Systems is that great of a software anyway. The interface is straight out of 1993.
ICOM's new IC-R15 has the new USB-C. 2024.
2032: USB-D becomes a new standard
2055: Yaesu and Kenwood bring out USB-C compatible radios
I have a few radios with USB-C charging and I am not a fan in general. Why? because they then don't include a cradle and a charging cradle is 100% better that USB-C. If USB-C charging was in addition to a cradle then yes it's nice.
They could have it like the Nintendo switch where the dock has USB C built in to set the mobile unit onto.
Concur. I would also like to see WiFi capabilities for firmware updates and programming.
And 5GHz Wi-Fi too. The 2.4GHz Wi-Fi in the IC-705 just doesn’t work where live due to all the other Wi-Fi signals from neighbours.
Although its not an amateur HT, my Wouxun KG935G Plus GMRS HT is USBC or cradle compatible which is nice for taking it on the go without the cradle, perhaps the change is coming sooner than you think for amateur, thanks to the chinese radios
Too bad there's only a dozen usb3 standards and nobody selling cables seems to adhere to any of them.
Well, for type C if you have PD that kind of will work for everything. PPS is gravy but not necessary.
As a sideline: The Baofeng GT-5R is a pretty good, spectrally clean radio: I checked a pair of them at home and had them double checked at the ARRL booth at Hamvention last week, and they are rosy and peachy goodness for thirty seven American Pesos! If you try one, you just might be tempted to "the other side..." 😂 73 DE W8LV Bill
I'm a newbie not licensed yet. I was anxious to at least start scanning so bought my first radio...the entry level UV-5R with cradle charger. WRONG!! Should have gotten any other radio with type C. This radio will soon be donated somewhere else, needy so I can buy a new first radio. ☹
Thank you. Thank you, for covering this connector insanity.

Major reason I’m getting the ID-50 when released.
Was there a price announced? I need another HT like I need a hole in the head but this rig seems intriguing.
@@n2rj just saw Ray at SeaPac yesterday. Wouldn’t give a price but said release date was hopefully this August. My guess is $479
Is that the sort of thing the EU should be worrying about? Talk about government overreach.
When the EU made the mandate, the rest of the world follows.
Totally agree! I also see mini USB sometimes let alone micro USB. How is Chinesium radios coming with USB C and other features that big brand radios can't seem to do or do a decade too late? It's as if they don't want to keep up and sell radios or something.🤷♂️
Probably adds cost they don't want to add? Chip shortage?
Very easy to do that
Agreed, Ria! It's time for U SB C charging. We should start with replacement LiION packs for existing radios that add USB C ports.
So glad you put this out there. Thanks! This needs to be pushed to mfgs. I have several GMRS usb-c charging radios, but none of my Ham HTs. Why??
Especially with the brilliance of USB-C PD (power delivery)!
My Retivis RT98 will accept the Raddiodity G-30 Radio batteries, thus there are two types of HTs in my shack using USB-C.
yep - the manufacturers are stuck in the 70's and need to get their stuff together and get with the program. HDMI outputs not DVI, USB not serial, USB PD and not barrel connectors.......we need to drive this change
My Yeasu FT 3D charges with a micro USB port but it's slow as all get out!! I believe the USBC will charge much faster and that could eliminate dragging the charging cradle out of the house
UV5R usb cable also works with FT5DR . Problem solved
Going from any other tech to ham radio equipment seems like falling off a cliff into the past. Every radio should be doing data and power over USB C at this point.
"I want USB type C charging on ham radios." Amen. What else needs to be said? DE K7RLN
I have always wondered why ham radios overall do not come with a power supply that you can just plug into a wall?. I guess for the same reason that printers do not come with cables.
Standardization is desirable and long overdue in the consumer electronics arena. Amateur radio HT's should be no exception de N8RKD
Standards? Vee don't need no steenking standards!!!
Seemingly every HT manufacturer from day one.
BAOFENG UV13 from R&L is USB-C
yeah that is a chinese radio. Very common on them.
That and I want HDMI (or better still, Display Port) video output. Even my super expensive FTdx-101MP radio has a DVI connector. WTF?
Oh my, cust the angry Abe Simpsons when barrel charging connections phase out for for USB-C.
EU law.... From the same people that wanted bananas to have a specific degree bend on them.
It would be great to see. I'm not holding my breath.
GutReise USB 5V to DC 12V Converter Power Cable + 8 Connectors Adapter USB to DC Power Cable (Below 2A Max for 8Watts)
Hard agree.
Seems like the Chinese manufacturers have got on board with USB C, thank you Far East for bringing the prices down for entry level radios.
They won’t make a change until 1. Law/regulation makes them do it or 2. buyers of their products vote with their money
Next step, have new desktop/mobile radios come with power pole connectors built in.
Okay, the Baofeng radios have their issues, but the Baofeng UV-17 has a USB-C port on their battery packs...
And the UV-16 has USB-C charging on the HT
I total agree with you Ria. I tried all different connectors for electronic devices.
would make more sence
Truth!
Amen! 🙌
