I have watched all your videos Mike. I just got hired by NS as a conductor. I’m nervous because I just don’t know what to expect. The railroad seems like the perfect career for me
It’s not a bad job starting as a conductor I was hired for Montgomery working between the M&M and the A&WP Subdivisions it can be challenging but it’s nothing to it but to do it
So soothing. So powerful. I love what you guys have control of. I have always admired you! Please be safe! The good and knowledgeable people know what you do! Edit: I used to deliver parts to the locomotive repair shops (Bailey Yard, Morrill, NE, Denver, Barstow and City of Commerce, who was always kind enough to let me rest until the next day. The parts came from Erie, used to be GE, but I think that it's something else now. Everything is something else now. I go back to the four man crew.
hi mike thank you for making this channel I'm in my glory I'm definitely gonna binge watch! your videos give a satisfaction that most others don't as others are viewed as they pass by but your actually a csx engineer who welcomes us aboard! that sets you apart from the rest!
Hi mike, this is Debra from the Bronx,my phone is on again off again, but I love all ur videos!! I keep hoping you'll drive that loco to NY,love to have you! You make train lovers dreams come true bringing us in the cab,and giving us a birdseye veiw of driving the iron horse, many thanks mike!! Great video!!
Nothing like a unique perspective to watch what goes on in the main engine! I always enjoy seeing this view and would love to operate one...besides my model railroad I have had since childhood. 😎👌🏾✅
what an amazing video my friend i'm from brazil i'm passionate about trains my dream is to be able to go to the united states one day to see these sensational csx trains i hope i get a cool train driver like you who honks for everyone!!!
Looks like a blast of a job, but I understand it comes with huge responsibilities: getting a big train started, getting one up steep grades and mountain passes in one piece, grade crossings, dummies trying to beat the train, kids playing on the tracks, getting the train in on time. I applied at the old Southern Railway Building for a job in 1976. Economy wasn't good then, but they were hiring. I'm not a, "shoulda, coulda, woulda," type of guy, but I sure wish they had hired me on.
For some reason down hear we have a lot of train comanys coming through like my city has a train that rep for our state and norfork southern wake me up every day cause I live like 4 miles away from the track and they train yard is not to far
I love these videos. Such a cool perspective. I was just wondering how you were allowed to get the camera in the cab. I thought electronic devices weren’t allowed in the locomotive.
Hey again Mike hope you're doing well maybe you can come down to horry co.(Conway sc columbus co. NC. And show R.J.Corman how to drive GP40s. Haha, hey how do you cook your mullet.......thanks🚑🚒
The early models ES44AC has 3 air intakes behind the cab and ES44DC only have 2. The later models both have 2 air intakes behind the cab. ES44AC 2 air intakes are close together and the ES44DC 2 air intakes are spaced apart.
What's considered an entry level job for getting onto the railroad? I would think a track laborer would be considered entry level. I still haven't applied yet but I'm still very interested. Did some research to know the typical workdays and what to expect when I do decide to enter in.
Kevin a track laborer would be entry for the engineering department or the railroad itself ,but there are multiple entry positions on the RR for the different departments. Anything involving the train and its crew and train movements come under the transportation department and in particular (train service employment) which includes your (brakemen switchmen flagman), (foreman conductor),and engineer. You would look for openings for conductor trainee or switchman positions.
@@locomotiveengineermikebarn8042 They did it just to reduce the payroll. Like I said above, I go back to the four man crew. As a taxi driver, I took crews from Taylor Yard in LA to Colton in the 80's. I think it's sad and a shame and may be responsible for a number of derailments (Casselton).
Mike I have a quick question. I have some tracks nearby where I live. From time to time, we hear a major sonic boom shake the tracks, then moments later the trains pass through. Is that to make sure the tracks are clear? This usually happens in darkness, around 10PM EST. You hear a big boom and then the tracks have reverb on them. Is that the normal process, or something else. I also live near a quarry, so no idea if that anything to do with it. Thank you much again for posting these. These videos are the remedy for the depression I am fighting through.
Sound does travel through the rails to a certain extent. When a train approaches you the rails will make a squeal sound as it gets closer. As for sonic boom? Never heard that one. You should try and make a video on it!

Awesome . . .
How to distinguish the type of locomotive without seeing the serial number beside the locomotive? like the difference between ES44DC and ES44AC?
The early models ES44AC has 3 air intakes behind the cab and ES44DC only have 2. The later models both have 2 air intakes behind the cab. ES44AC 2 air intakes are close together and the ES44DC 2 air intakes are spaced apart.

Thanks!
Are you honking the horn each and every time? Or is there an automated system that honks it for you at controlled crossings?
That's me everytime.
@AlaskaErik the newer locomotives have that type of system though. Railroading has changed so much.

Have you ever been to a Waycross GA?
No I haven't.
Why do trains not use cabooses anymore? I know y’all have the EOT device.
Believe it or not they even cited safety as just one of many reasons to get rid of the caboose.

They remove them because It’s more crewmembers there’s better technology like the EOT device which does a better job
Please correct me if I’m wrong so you can use GoPros in the cab of locomotives but you just can’t be on your phone?
