Why Angel Gomes Is The EXACT Player England Have Been Missing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 жов 2024
- Angel Gomes isn't a superstar in the mold of Bellingham, Foden, or Palmer. But in his debut performances for England he has already proved that he might be the missing link the team has needed for decades. Adam Clery takes a long-awaited look at Gomes as a player, and explains exactly why he could be a necessity for those around him to finally flourish.
And yes, this is the Angel Gomes video we said we'd made last month. It's finally time! Enjoy!

Yes. Angel is the right fit. Thanks for explaining why
Mate, been waiting for this video since the last England video. Angel Gomes was the one Man United starlet in my viewing time that I was bitterly disappointed did not get more game time. He was electric, two footed, fantastic touch and technique, great balance. And now he is clearly maturing into a magnificent player. Thanks for this video, Adam.
You've never watched gomes if you think he's two footed, and I'm a massive gomes fan. I've been watching him since 14. But he's not two footed😂
@@ABESW0RLD What do you think two footed means???
@@ABESW0RLD I've never seen him play, but i'm guessing he has 2 feet
@@adrianbrennan3791 the ability to receive and play a pass, or shoot, with either foot comfortably without hesitation and without significant difference in quality (and since this is a top level player to a very high standard).
what do you think it means?
@@ABESW0RLD Hmm on second thoughts, I think I know what you mean. He is definitely very right foot dominant. I went over a lot of his clips and I don't think I ever saw him shoot or send a long pass with his left foot. Fair play for noticing that. I think I was taken in by the fact that he can go either side of a player in a one-on-one situation, he is unpredictable in a way usually two footed players are. That said, he does have a lot of control, if not power, with his left foot, has made a few assists with that foot, and even his FIFA 24 card rates him with a 4/5 weak foot.
But I think what I meant is his balance and explosiveness, both aided by that low centre of gravity which also made him hard to dispossess, was what really stuck out for me at a young age. He always looked like he would make something happen, had good decision making, something I never felt about many of United's other heralded youngsters like Mejbri, Chong or Elanga.
12:18 - Wow, those are some insane numbers by Verrati
Smart kid, good feet. Hope he keeps progressing, he offers a lot of solutions, can vary it up a lot.
As a city fan, he seems perfect for a guardiola team
@@idk-dz3foactually agree, and would fit a lot of prem teams, hope we’ll see him in the prem soon, think a big club will snatch him up soon
Adam you’re the best analyst of football by a mile!! And love your natural energy and humor that make it all the more fun! I look forward to every video and always learn something new while having a giggle at you…with you I meant with you! 😂😂😂😂 keep up the good work there fella and well done to the rest of your crew! Cheers from LA!! 😉
Michael Carrick was serially under capped for England. Gomes is a player with the same sort of metronomic unselfishness to his play.
💯 agree!! If only the managers back then played a 3 midfield he’d of been awesome behind Gerrard and Lampard and probably of made it work!!
Great shout
I don't usually watch non-Pep videos (surprise) but I always learn something new when I do on this channel
I mean i think an england setup with 15 players on the pitch *would* be extremely effective
“LAZOOOR BEAM” Caught me right off guard 😂😂😂
Now a video explaining why Southgate was constantly moaning about a lack of midfield options whilst constantly ignoring Angel Gomes. He even went to watch Henderson in the Netherlands early this year. How do you opt to select a full back in midfield when there's an option playing in France.
And it's not like he is some unknown quantity. He has been part of the England youth set up for ages. I think he was captain of that u17 team that won the world cup. He plays for Lille which isn't some small unknown club. So I fail to understand why Southgate was struggling to find a central midfielder, why he was watching a past his best Henderson at Ajax when Gomes is there, just across the channel. If he couldn't find time to go watch him, what exactly was he doing with his time between games? Not saying Gomes is the answer by the way. I just find it really odd that he never once got a call up for even the odd friendly.
If we’re being serious it’s cause he wasn’t playing in the Premier League. Simple as that really
@jojoohyeah4761 according to Phillips, he was advised against joining Juventus or a club outside of the premier league because Southgate was concerned about the competitiveness of other leagues.
Which is why he joined West Ham and that turned out well. That is insane to me that an England manager wouldn't select a player from Serie A because he doesn't think the league is good enough. Even though he lost a final to an Italian team full of Serie A players.
@@JR-sj1jzexactly, that’s why southgate never really trusted our lads playing in Italy even though they’re playing for giant clubs like Milan in finals! It was very frustrating so it’s exciting we have a manager more knowledgeable
Southgate's a 🤡
He did an incredible job but he did tend to pick players with experience and it would've been fun to see him bring in gomes instead of mainoo, Wharton, trent or Gallagher playing there. If england don't win the next world cup, you're all gonna look so stupid with the southgate hate 😂
Ha. I wondered what happenned to this follow up! So refreshing to listen to a football fan that not only talks sense but knows what he is talking about. I've only seen glimpses of Gomes but he reminds me a little of Scholes/Modric.
Gomes is the closest thing England have to a player like Kante, small so low centre of gravity but insane energy levels and ability to get around the pitch
I learnt that Angel Gomes is the Céline Dion of football.
Fourfourtwo is my fav❤
Would love him to replace Jorginho at Arsenal 😮💨
He reminds me of Scholes. Celline Dion ball 😅
As do I , I think he is more like combine of scholes and XAVi though
Wohhhh no pressure there then?? Hahaha
Yes glad to see it ❤
He is as good as rice etc infact better as he is the ultimate xavi / iniesta / kroos / modric esque player. Hes not interested in running really fast in a straight line to make it look like he got in the box but it was not his fault no one found him. Hes more intelligent than 99% of english players in his understanding of the game.
Totally different kind of player. He will be perfect next to rice! Rice is an enforcer and angel gomes is tiny (168cm). Together, it would be nice balance.
What has happened to Wharton? He looked exactly like Angel Gomes is playing in his brief England cameo. How come he is not getting a look in again??
Was wondering that too, he did unbelievably well in his debut for England. But had a few iffy games recently but then so has the whole Palace team. Think he just needs to mature a bit more and they’re keeping him close nurturing him in the U21’s, so hopefully his time will come soon enough!!
Wharton, on a good day, also seems able to do this. Agree though Gomes is superb
A tactically-competent manager may finally get us over the line next time!!!
It’s definitely an exciting prospect to see how he’s getting England playing free flowing footy!!
Really enjoyed that Adam...excellent as usual. I'd have Gomes starting over Rice all day long...
I think his point was to play him with rice at an 8 not a 6
@@IAmCrumpton Indeed! I would like Gomes, Rice and Palmer as the midfield three...😁 but if not - then Bellingham for Rice!
Gomes was a joy to watch. Actually, similar to watching Xavi back in the day. Different positions I know, but similar style.
My team, going off what team chemistry would be is
Pickford
Walker Stones Colwill Lewis
Gomes Rice
Saka Palmer Gordon
Bellingham
Become in possession
Walker Stones Colwill
Gomes Lewis
Palmer Rice
Saka Bellingham Gordon
I almost completely agree with you but I'd go with Trent instead of Walker; Colwill instead of Lewis; and Guehi instead of Colwill.
@@OserojiemenKing that’s fair, but Colwill is an awful left back yet one of the best young CB’s I’ve seen for a long. Walker is there for physicality and pace on the counter. Leadership. Lewis is such a versatile player that is amazing at the dual roll. Important as there is no real left back in the squad.
england play so much more controlled and fluid with him on the pitch
so what you’re saying is that Angel is the number 6 England have been crying out for?
yay more fourfourtwo! The goat footy content. (Not you Monk. Not you.)
*).
There are some tantalising quandaries for England ATM … Nice place to be
remember when Southgate said England needed a player like Calvin Philips, maybe this is what he meant
Is he the reason for lille's recent success over real madrid? And would he be a good addition to Arsenal's midfield depth, seeing how much we miss Odegaard?
Get it, we could do with this profile. But does it have to come from a nominal midfielder; isn't this basically also what Rico Lewis does.
And if the ball progressor and tempo controller comes from fullback then that enables you to play a front four of Saka, Palmer, Bellingham, and Gordon behind Kane. Which would be handy
Adam Wharton is also the possible candidate for this CDM role in England, probably got higher ceiling than Angel Gomes
I think long term maybe play both and drop Rice
@@kelly980 rice is more of a ball winner and box crashing box to box midfielder, to balance the midfield England must need someone like Rice's profile to be in starting XI!
Amazing video, love your England content! But come on Adam, if you're starting Gomes, who are you dropping.... We need to see your 11?
please a tony pulis stoke video? would make a change from the current day teams that all seem to play the same way
Only reasons anyone even remembers that team is because they made one FA Cup final (which they lost 1-0), Peter Crouch, long throws, Adam scoring from 70yds & that one time they did a god awful Liverpool team 6-1. Granted that is quite a bit more than most teams get but it's hardly worthy of the ridiculous legend that now surrounds them. He managed Stoke in the Prem for 5 seasons, the highest they finished was 11th. This fabled Tony Pulis Stoke team were, in fact, the definition of mid. Pulis btw, last seen getting sacked by Sheffield Wednesday in 2020 after only 10 games in charge.
@@pieceofgosa losing an fa cup final to man city is hardly something to scoff at. they had a fraction of the budget of other premier league teams, and didnt go down under pulis. also im not asking four four two to make a video on his time at sheffield wednesday, where honestly it seemed like a doomed club at that time
@@matthewrichardson4487 Fair. My issue is the mythologizing of his time there. They were a decent side that had some good results but if I'm being honest I'm probably still just salty about what happened to Aaron Ramsey 😂
If Mainoo played for Palace, Im sure he would have a few sub appearances like Eze, he might become a no.10, but he's not better than Palmer, Foden or Bellingham, and he definitely isnt mobile enough for what Gomes brings to the England team. I think ideally Carsley would echo his u21 team and haveBellingham upfront with Foden and Palmer behind - instead of Kane. Carsley is light years better than Southgate, luckiest manager ever and bottled both finals playing cautiously.
Said for a while Rice is not technical enough to play in midfield. Not only his chronic inability to play through but also very poor on the half turn.
Also think Wharton could do a very good job in the 6 role.
Doesn’t he play in the midfield for Arsenal?
He is one of those players that is so highly rated by so many people but if a central/defensive midfielder can't play through balls I can't rate him🤷🏽♀️
Rice is a bloody brilliant midfielder. But not as the 6 hence he’s not playing there for his club. He’s really good at driving the team up field, has an eye for goal and great defensive work around our own penalty box.
@@georgedinoboyhe means in the base of midfield - as the 6.
It didn't take Arteta long to figure that out, that's why he plays Partey or Jorginho there.
It's definitely Angel, not Angel. Hope that clarifies things.
😂😂😂
If Gomes gets dropped for Bellingham tonite I’m gonna scream….inside. As usual with England sides.
we need a video on RYAN GRAVENBERCH
good analysis
I hope the links to Tottenham are true, that's what we need.
He’s TOP 👍
I remember when he made Wrestling content!!
Other than England, he is the right fit for Real Madrid, i would say. After they lost Toni kross Real have been struggling in almost every thing you said England were struggling in
Who's a better long-term fit between him and Wharton?
I think it totally depends on the opposition. If they're looking to sit back and be compact Angel will open them up; if they're looking to run at you Wharton is more physical and defensively solid. Then again you could still have Gomes and have Rice cover for him.
If Wharton keeps developing it's a nice choice to have. Maybe play both and drop Rice.
It's a shame Lee Carsley doesn't watch this channel, after that Greece match.
I like the pass ❤😊
Please do a video on your England team picks including Gomes, who I agree is fab.
Thank you
YES!!!
love you adam
Isn't Rico Lewis a similar type of player that could do this?
I definitely think he could in the future!! But with our lack of left backs think he’s best there for now but he’ll move into midfield like he does for City and how trent does.
Ruto must go 🇰🇪🇰🇪
And Gomes doesn't play v Greece and England look totally disjointed.
Bingo.
It doesn't have to be Gomes, Adam Wharton can play that role too. But it has to be someone who isn't Declan Rice because he doesn't have the "between the lines" passes.
Disappointing for England.
He's an excellent player but I think he's a bit slow chasing back, as I saw him completely outpaced a few times
Pirlo and schools were never fast. If he has speed around him and is clever with his positioning then can really see this working
No the only reason they haven’t controlled a game in 8 years is because they had a manager that had about as much tactical ability as a door knob
funniest part... United let him go cos he "wasnt good enough" 🤣
What a surprise. Everything Manchester United’s midfield has been missing is a midfielder we let leave the club
He looks exactly like youd expect an english saviour to look like
I love him as a player but I don't think he's the one England have been missing.
Wait a minute, bottom left is Brian ButterField.
Unfortunately most of his passing was backwards to the defence. Which isn't really controlling the game. I'm hoping for better from him in future games.
While I agree with the analysis in principle, let us keep things in perspective - Finland are not a good team. Let‘s see how he gets on against tougher opponents.
I don’t see maguire 😂😂 4:05👍
If England played Michael Carrick at the base of their midfield alongside scholes and lampard/Gerrard, they'll would have retired with a world cup or 2 EUROS.
Agree but our managers back then were so rigid and never played 3 in midfield! Was soo frustrating
6 players in 3 positions, can’t make the same mistakes as the golden generation need the right players in the team not the biggest name and use those players as options to rotate and impact games on the bounce, palmer deserves to start but he was electric off the bench at the euros so no right or wrong answer
England are the spurs of national teams
Curtis Jones would also do this role wonderfully
I see jones as an 8 never a 6. But time will tell
Rico Lewis could definitely turn into a great option at 6 though, that kids all round games is brilliant
"Celine Dion" ball 😂
Gomes is taking out Kobbie Mainoo. He is a controller
They're the type of players that are generally conspicuous by their absence; Thomas Partey for Arsenal to pick a totally non-random name off the top of my head.
Very true!! They’re not flashy playing sexy football but their the glue to hold the team together and give it the right balance we’ve been missing
So expect England at the next tournament to waste him and get him to play where he will be wasted!
TAA wasn’t given a chance in midfield. He was used as a scapegoat for the lacklustre performances of England in the first two group games of the euros. I think we can all agree southgate was the problem
no, on that front TAA in midfield was still just a problem with anyone as manager.
Isn't that the same thing mainoo does
Did u not watch the video and see the stats breakdown of his passing and most importantly through balls? That’s the whole point mainoo doesn’t do that so not the same thing

Rice is too defensive.
He's not brave enough to make forward pass. He's excellent in winning duels, intercept attack but fails to play that Rodri role.
Did u not see his through ball stats and the highlights???
henderson - guehi, colwill, trent or lewis (inverting) - bellingham (left 8), gomez, foden (right 8), palmer (10) - gordon (left wing), kane (9), saka (right wing).
this would massacre everything in its path.
not with that back 3 and the only cover in front being Gomez. Trent shouldn't be anywhere near a genuine back 3, lewis arguably not either but he can at least defend 1v1. Colwill looks prone to rash tackles and trying to mix it up rather than just focusing on defending simply. also Henderson is sadly not as good as we were led to believe a few years back. with a back 3 you need Rice in front to win some duels and be able to drop in and cover defensively, for all Gomez did well at controlling possesion we havne't really seen him have to perform that part of the role yet due to the opposition (he won some good ball as part of a high press in the middle/attacking third but just didn't have to do anything defensively).
also Stones is still part of any best english centre back combination in a 3 or 4 for a while yet.
Gomes is at least one foot too short to be the answer, no matter how well he did against...Finland.
I thought Mainoo was the answer to everything?
Kante says otherwise
Mainoo is definitely not the answer. I would rather Wharton.
